New Radiohead Album - In Rainbows

Well, I'm giving it a try. I chose to pay $2.07 for it. I've never really gotten into Radiohead - never really tried. It's a low price, but I figure that they're gonna get more money from people who are more invested in their music than I am. Plus, the amount I paid is still probably a little more than they would have actually got from me if I had bought a CD from them under the conventional distribution model. I have heard a few of the tracks on Sirius before I bought it, and I think it may be something I can get into.

The new album is great...much better than "Hail to the Thief". Wasn't sure about it after one listen, but it just keeps getting better and better. I would disagree with the poster above who compared it to OK Computer. Unless, if he meant that they are back to their instruments...

Other than the opening song (15 Step), there's not much in the way of electronics (like Kid A, HTTT and Thom's solo effor "The Eraser"). It is rather mellow. Lots of piano in this effort.

I am really digging "Jigsaw Falling into Place" (formerly named "Open Pick") and "All I Need". Other highlights on the album are "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi", "House of Cards" and "Reckoner". Oh yeah, they FINALLY released "Nude" (formerly "Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)")!

Overall, I am really liking it. Looking forward to hearing CD2 in December!!

I loved "The Bends" and "OK Computer" but they kind of lost me after that. I've respected their recent works for being ambitious but I can't say I ever really got into them. After just a few listens, this release seems to be a nice middle ground. "In Rainbows" has some great hooks but it still has an experimental element to it. I'm really liking it so far. I paid about $2.50. If I had known it would be this good, I would have gone a couple bucks higher.

The Week the Music Industry Came Unraveled

Was it really just last week that the RIAA won its first major file sharing lawsuit? I think that history will remember the victory as the apex of the industries clever strategy of suing its customers. In the eight long days since the verdict, it?s been nothing but bad news for the major labels. It?s almost like the verdict put a curse on the entire industry.

During our podcast a few weeks back, we raised a few eyebrows when we suggested that it wouldn?t be long before major recording artists began self-releasing their albums. This past week we saw a major act do just that, as Radiohead began selling its latest collection of songs directly to consumers through the band?s website.

Can one band bring down an entire industry? Hardly. But Radiohead isn?t alone.

The recording industry is still thinking like it's the 80s. The are fighting a losing battle with technology. Groups can market themselves and record themselves and make and sell their own CDs.
What do they(groups)need the big recording industry for?

Personally, I find Radiohead's music lacking. It all sounds like re-worked Beatles music.

Does Tom Waits sound anything like the Beatles? And he is very popular.
Does KT Tunstall? Does any rap artist you can name? Does Amy Winehouse?
I think there is too much sameness in these "indie/alternative" groups.
That's why I like jazz and world music.

No doubt that Radiohead was influenced by The Beatles...shit who wasn't!?!? I do not think they sound like them at all, but most groups were probably influenced by them.

For example, take the song "Paranoid Android". This was originally three separate songs. They decided to take these three songs and make them into one - The Beatles did something similar with "Happiness is a Warm Gun".

Yeah, that is what I was saying with my post. They do not sound like the Beatles, but of course they were influenced by them.

Beatles also combined songs on "A Day in the Life", IIRC.
