New York Mets (2x World Series Champions)

Any thoughts on why 8 of the 11 suspensed players are hispanic? I know its a very, very small sample, but 73% seems like a rather high proportion. Is it coincidence or is this sample indicative of a particular demographic using steroids more often?

My guess would be because steroids are not illegal in many Latin American countries. At least, I remember speculation on this board about players using substances legally in their home countries during the off-season.

If I'm not allowed to start a thread like this I apologize, but I couldn't contain my excitement.

With Duaner Sanchez coming back and JOHAN SANTANA at the front of the rotation, the New York Metropolitans have to be the sudden favorite for the National League pennant.

To get the top pitcher in baseball without giving up our top prospect (Fernando Martinez) or Mike Pelfrey is amazing.

Any other Mets fans out there feeling the love?

Not a Mets fan, but the future is looking very bright for the Metropolitians as of this evening.

To get Santana w/o giving up Martinez is absolutely amazing. The Mets stole that deal. They basically got Santana for an average at best everyday outfielder(Gomez), a washed up prospect(Humber) and 2 Single A arms. Damn. They had better come to terms w/ Santana.

Don't they always just stockpile talent only to come up short? When are these free-spending teams gonna realize that a less talented team with great chemistry usually trumps a team loaded with All-Stars...well unless that team is Boston.

Boston is a team loaded w/ All Stars that also has chemistry because they have been together for so long.

This trade, to me symbolizes everything that is wrong w/ baseball. The Reds could have offered a better package than the Mets did, however they couldnt have offer Santana the kind of Money that the Mets can. The rich get richer, while in most cases the poor are forced to rebuild.

You're right to an extent. There are several teams in MLB who could have made better offers like the Dodgers and Angels for example... Cincinnati as well. I'm not so sure, however, about who can and cannot sign afford to sign him. Perhaps the Reds couldn't afford him, I don't know... but plenty of owners right now play the "woe is me" card, pocket as much money as they can and worry more about their profits than they do winning.

As for the Mets, this is a good move by them. Santana is going to dominant in the National League... especially in a division that includes the Nats and Marlins. You may hear an idiot like Cowherd refer to him as an injury risk tomorrow (he has said that before), but the Twins have really babied him the last few years. They've kept his pitch counts way down, and he's been very efficient. 200+ innings for Santana isn't quite the same as it is for the average pitcher. And mechanically, he's damn near perfect.

Left-hander Johan Santana, waving to the Metrodome crowd in August, was a two-time Cy Young winner with Minnesota.

Johan Santana is a contract extension and physical from going to the New York Mets.
After months of deliberation, the Twins reached a tentative agreement yesterday to part with the two-time Cy Young Award winner for outfielder Carlos Gomez, and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey, two people familiar with the deal said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.
"If it's true, obviously, you're getting arguably the best pitcher in the game," Mets third baseman David Wright said.

Santana agrees to $137.5M, 6-year contract with Mets

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Johan Santana is a money pitcher, and the New York Mets are paying for it.
Santana and the Mets agreed Friday to a $137.5 million, six-year contract extension, a record for a pitcher and the last major step needed to complete the team's blockbuster trade with Minnesota.

After the sides were granted an extra two hours to work on a deal, the Mets announced about 30 minutes before the new 7 p.m. EST deadline that negotiations had concluded. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was scheduled to take a physical Saturday.
