GAHANNA -- The Newark boys basketball team knew it had clinched at least a tie for the Ohio Capital Conference-Ohio Division championship Friday night when it defeated Gahanna 67-51.
It took less than two minutes after that for the Wildcats to learn they had earned it outright.

Wildcats earn No. 2 seed

POWELL -- The Newark boys basketball team found out Sunday just how much respect its 17-1 overall record and its impressive 15-0 run against Central District competition is worth.
The Wildcats received the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Division I Central District tournament. In voting conducted by all 38 Division I coaches in the district, Northland received 20 first-place votes to Newark's 18 to edge the Wildcats for the top seed by 11 points.

Newark moved up from eighth to seventh in Division I in the sixth weekly Associated Press high school boys basketball poll released Tuesday.
The Wildcats won two games last week to improve to 18-1. They host Lancaster in their regular-season finale Friday night.

NEWARK -- Toga-wearing students poured into Jimmy Allen Gymnasium about 6:30 p.m. Friday, further aiding the Newark students' goal of a "White out" for the Wildcats' boys basketball game against Lancaster.
Some fans talking in the upper deck said they hadn't been to a game in two or three years

COLUMBUS ? The Newark boys basketball team struggled to pull away from Briggs in the first half of their Division I tournament opener Tuesday night, but the Wildcats used a 10-0 run at the start of the third quarter to power to an 84-48 win at Centennial.

COLUMBUS ? Cory Thomasson had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Newark boys basketball team to an 89-57 victory against Whetstone in a Division I sectional tournament game Friday night at Centennial.
