<!--Deployed By andrewt 2.7.2005 14:10:1 Log:20050207140958_19165_andrewt--> History will again take place the weekend of April 23-24 when the 2005 NFL Draft commences from the Javits Center in New York City. But before that happens, we wanted to whet your whistles with some trivia from drafts past. Since 1988 ...

  • There have been 504 players taken as first-round picks. Of the 504 players, 256 of them were offensive players while 248 were defensive players.
  • There have been 13 offensive players and four defensive players taken with the No. 1 overall pick.
In the history of the draft ...

  • Here's a breakdown by position of who went No. 1:

    Quarterbacks: 24
    Running backs: 23
    Defensive linemen: 18
    Wide receivers: 5
    Linebackers: 5
    Offensive linemen: 4
  • Five kickers and punters have been taken in the first round.
  • The No. 1 overall pick in the draft has been traded 13 times before or on draft day.
  • Looking for sensational state trios? Only five times in the history of the draft have three players attending college in the state of Texas been drafted in the first 10 picks. That happened in 1939, 1949, 1958, 1970 and 1980. In 1939, all three players came from TCU.

On Texas' trail is Florida, who have accomplished the "threepeat" four times: 1987, 1997, 1998 and 2000. The three players who did it in 2000 were all from Miami (Fla.).
  • Only twice in NFL history have a quarterback, running back and tight end from the same school get taken in Round 1. In 1993, Notre Dame's Rick Mirer, Jerome Bettis and Irv Smith were selected towards the top, and in 1995, Penn State's trio of Kerry Collins, Ki-Jana Carter and Kyle Brady were all first-round selections.
  • The school with the most players taken in a single draft is Texas, with 17 in 1984. The Longhorns also hold the record for most consecutive years with a player selected, watching at least one of its own make the NFL every year since 1938.
  • This draft is shaping up to be chock full of running backs. Three of them may go in the top 10. That's pretty good, but twice in NFL history, there have been nine running backs selected in the first round. That happened in 1938 and 1941. Back then, only 12 teams were in the NFL.
Making the most of it

  • Notre Dame and Southern California have had the most players drafted first overall. They've each had five. The Trojans are the only school to have No. 1 overall selections in consecutive years -- Ron Yary was taken first in 1968 and O.J. Simpson was taken first in 1969.
<table align="left" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="145"> <tbody><tr> <td width="145">

</td> <td width="15"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="145"> Jonathan Vilma was one of six Hurricanes taken in last year's draft. </td> <td width="15"> </td> </tr> </tbody></table>
  • A total of 31 players from Florida colleges have been selected in the first round of drafts conducted since 2000, the most of any state. With players like Alex Barron and Antrel Rolle available, look for that number to go up this year.

  • Most offensive linemen taken in the first round: 1968 (10)
  • Most wide receivers taken in the first round: 2004 (seven)
Year by year

  • In the past 10 years, 11 colleges have had at least three players chosen in the first round:

    2004 -- Miami (Fla.)
2002 -- Miami (Fla.) and Tennessee
2001 -- Miami (Fla.) and Michigan
    2000 -- Florida State
    1999 -- Ohio State
1998 -- North Carolina and Tennessee
1997 -- Florida State and Miami (Fla.)
  • Over the past seven years, 180 defensive ends have been invited to the combine, and 77 percent of them (139 of 180) have been drafted, the highest percentage of any position.
  • Over the past seven years, 309 wide receivers have been invited to the combine, the most of any position.
  • Most players by school drafted over the past 10 years (1995 - 2004):

    1. Tennessee (67)
    2. Ohio State (66)
    3. Florida State (63)
    4. Miami (Fla.) (62)
    5. Florida (57)
    5. Nebraska (57)
    7. Colorado (48)
    7. Georgia (48)
    9. Michigan (47)
    9. Notre Dame (47)
  • Most schools with players taken in the top 10 over the past 10 years (1995-2004):

    Florida
    Florida State
    Miami (Fla.)
    Ohio State
    Texas

    All have had six.
Parting shot

  • In the first draft ever, nine teams each had nine picks (81 total). No player picked by Philadelphia played in a regular-season game, while the Bears saw two of their nine picks go to the Hall of Fame. Just proof that the best-laid draft plans can always go awry.

NFL teams could lose draft pick, face fines for unprofessional conduct during draft prospect interviews

The NFL has issued a warning to teams that they could lose a draft pick and face significant fines if club representatives conduct themselves unprofessionally in interviews with draft prospects.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was sent to clubs on Wednesday, the league said a team would forfeit a draft pick between the first and fourth round and be fined a minimum of $150,000 if it's determined a club representative displayed conduct that is "disrespectful, inappropriate, or unprofessional" during an interview. Fines and/or suspensions of individual club employees also could be imposed, according to the memo.

"We aim for dignity, respect and professionalism," league executive Troy Vincent told the AP. "It's that simple."

The league also plans to eliminate the Wonderlic test for prospective players, and it is revising some of its scouting combine drills to better simulate game-related movement. Wide receivers and tight ends will run crossing routes instead of wheel routes, and running backs will run option routes instead of corner and post-corner routes.

Over the past several years, there have been occasional reports of inappropriate questions being asked of draft prospects.

In 2010, then-Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized to Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick Dez Bryant for asking during a pre-draft visit whether his mother was a prostitute.

In 2016, then-Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn apologized to Eli Apple because one of his coaches asked the cornerback his sexual preference.

In 2018, former LSU running back Derrius Guice said one team at the combine asked about his sexuality and another inquired if his mother was a prostitute.

Former NFL tight end Benjamin Watson, who played 16 seasons between 2004-20, compared the interview process to an interrogation.

"I can remember sitting in a dark room with a huge spotlight," Watson told the AP last year. "There's a seat there like you're being interrogated for a crime and all the front-office staff is in the back in the shadows and you can't see them. The guy grabbed my wrist and he's like: 'I can feel your pulse, so I know if you're lying to me. Have you ever smoked marijuana?' I said: 'No.' I really hadn't. I've never smoked. He said: 'I think you're lying. I can feel your pulse. Are you lying to us?' I said: 'No, I'm not.'

"So for a minute, I thought I actually did smoke marijuana and maybe I need to confess to a crime that I didn't commit. But these sorts of tactics that are happening at the combine and that are not being monitored definitely need to be done away with."
