No. 7 Ohio State lacrosse earns 15-9 win over No. 20 Boston University

The Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the young season with a win over a ranked opponent.
The No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team maintained its perfect early-season record with a 15-9 win over the No. 20 Boston University Terriers Saturday in a sold-out game in Columbus.
Sophomore midfielder Christian Feliziani, who was last week’s Big Ten Specialist of the Week, won the opening faceoff, setting the Buckeyes up for a quick goal from freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi just over a minute into play. Feliziani won the ensuing faceoff and took the ball himself for his first goal of the season just eight seconds later.
After trading possessions with the Terriers, freshman midfielder Jackson Reid found the back of the net to put the Buckeyes up 3-0 with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman midfielder Justin Inacio came in to relieve Feliziani, winning the faceoff and leading to a quick goal from sophomore attackman Tre Leclaire. The Buckeyes won the next faceoff, but turned to ball over to Boston University. After a minute-long possession, senior goalie Matthew Smidt recorded his first save of the day on a shot from Thomas Schmidt. Smidt cleared and gave the Buckeyes the ball on offense, leading to Reid’s second score of the day midway through the quarter. Two more goals from senior attackman Hank Bethke and sophomore defenseman Jeff Henrick gave Ohio State a 7-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Despite getting the ball on attack early in the second quarter, the Terriers were unable to capitalize on two shot attempts down low. Ohio State instead took the ball back on a clear for a quick score from junior midfielder Logan Maccani. After trading possessions, Boston University capitalized on a man-up opportunity following an illegal procedure penalty from Ohio State, finally getting on the board with 9:37 remaining in the first half.
Leclaire bounced back for the Buckeyes, scoring his second goal of the game on an assist by junior attackman Gale Thorpe. Neither team was able to find the back of the net for several minutes until Leclaire connected once again with 1:44 remaining in the half for his third goal of the day, assisted by junior attackman Jack Jasinski, to give the Buckeyes a 10-1 lead at the break.
The Terriers emerged strong in the second half, scoring four goals in less than six minutes to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to five. A timeout by Ohio State slowed things down a bit, and the Buckeyes finally found the back of the net once again on a goal by Jasinski midway through the quarter. Reid followed up with his third and fourth goals of the game to put Ohio State up 13-5. After a goal from BU’s Schmidt, Ohio State headed into the final quarter of play with a seven-goal advantage.
BU scored just 18 seconds into the fourth quarter to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to six, but no one scored again until the 6:45 mark when senior midfielder John Kelly connected on his first goal of the day. Jasinski followed up with the Buckeyes’ final score of the game with 3:59 remaining in the fourth.
Reid led Ohio State in scoring with four goals on the day, followed by Leclaire’s three and Jasinski’s two. In all, nine Buckeyes scored against BU.
The Buckeyes held a 28-24 advantage in shots on goal on the day. Smidt had a career-high 15 saves to BU goalie Joe McSorley’s 13. Ohio State, led by Feliziani and Inacio, went 16-for-27 on faceoffs against the Terriers, and the Buckeyes collected 42 groundballs to the Terriers’ 36. Senior defenseman Freddy Freibott and Feliziani led Ohio State, each collecting five groundballs on the day.
Next up, the Buckeyes are scheduled to face Hofstra next Saturday in Columbus.
