Notable Undrafted Players

A lot of college players are "system" players who excel in their teams' particular schemes but do not have the athleticism to play in the NFL. Guys like Shazor, Grootegoed, Stubblefield, Chang, White, and some other big name undrafted players fit in that category.

This is from CollegeFootballnews.com - They had a little blurb about the higher profile undrafted early entry college players.

Ernest Shazor, S Jr. - Michigan
Projected: late 1st to 2nd round

Where did he go?
Undrafted (What happened? A bad score on the Wonderlic test, slow 40 time, non-descript position and, rumor has it, the NFL secret detectives dug something up.)

something is going to be pretty interesting when it finally comes out... there he is in the Lions back yard... with all the hype... and even they decided not to sign him as an undrafted player... there's baggage coming...

I gotta disagree on Groots being a system player. He doesn't have the measurables that the NFL wants, but that is different from being a system player. He was a top 25 recruit overall coming out of HS.

1460 the fan reported that Shazor signed with Arizona today.
Jerry Jones, who publishes The Drugstore List, a draft magazine, was on 1360 today and said he spoke w/ a person in the Cardinals front office who had interviewed Shazor, and that person told him that Shazor was a big time jerk. He kinda implied there was more, but wouldn't go into it on air.

Speaking, of undrafted folks, how about the entire Penn St. squad?

No PSU players drafted for first time since 1951

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- For the first time since 1951, a Penn State player was not selected in the NFL draft.

The two-day, seven-round draft ended Sunday. It was also the first time during Joe Paterno's tenure as head coach that an NFL team didn't draft a Nittany Lion. Paterno starts his 40th season at the helm of Penn State football this fall.
Penn State has had losing records four out of the last five seasons and did not have a deep crop of players available for this year's draft. Only nine seniors graduated who saw significant playing time in Happy Valley.

Quarterback Zack Mills, safety Andrew Guman and linebacker Derek Wake had been considered the strongest candidates from Penn State's 2005 graduating class to be drafted. Any unselected players can still sign with an NFL team as a free agent.

No surprise...they're a young team, and the guys who are leaving are the reason they've been awful for 4 of the last 5 years. Wake shouldn't have even been starting, and quite frankly neither should Mills the way he played his last 2 years.

Someone sure gave him some "great" advice or he just grossly over estimated his own ability;

If you read the quotes from Shazor in today's Detroit paper...I think you'll realize that the 2nd part of that is probably the case..

He talks about how he DESERVED to go pro....

I think that clarifies things a bit....I wish him luck in Arizona...but truth be told, Shazor turned pro immediately following the Purdue game IMO..
