OC Chip Kelly (Official Thread)

UCLA had the No. 1 rushing offense in the county in 2022 w/DTR and Charbonnet.

Well, Chip Kelly did kind of the impossible here, he "made the (proverbial) silk purse out of a sow's ear"...........

They mad as hell about how this offseason is going.
We're just going from strength to strength. The punches keep coming and it ain't no thing.

"You hire him today, and you want to bronze his penis".... Classic

I think if most schools could bring him to be the OC, they'd be building statues already.
Except Iowa - maybe Ferentz was worried Chip would outshine him and media would accidentally give Chip COTY award.

This was a quote from Valenti making fun of Scum fans who at the beginning of the week hated the thought of Martindale being hired, and then when hired acted like the guy is a sure thing.

I think a lotta people think back to the Chip Kelly offenses run by Marcus Marriota, Dennis Dixon, Darren Thomas, etc., and have the ultra fast paced tempo teams that were more finesse and essentially basketball on grass.

But he evolved quite a bit at UCLA and was much more pro style and less tempo…..in fairness, I don’t think he ever had the talent at UCLA to replicate what he was doing at Oregon but he tried to play much more Complimentary style football, and learned to take defense into account.

Will be interesting to see how he approaches the offense with this amount of weapons, the speed we have at RB and WR, and a mobile QB…in an ironic twist, part of his “self-demotion” to OC is partly bc I don’t think he wants to worry about defense, special teams, and running a whole team at this point…..he wants to solely focus on offense and in turn, he’s gonna allow Day to become a more complete HC….which is kinda badass when you think about it….hopefully Chip coming to help Day, gets Day over the hump and Chip’s pupil becomes the master. It’s pretty storybook if they can reach their ceiling…..

Bingo!
People want to tie Kelly to running “soft” teams, because his teams relied on speed, space, timing and putting the defense on their heels. Im sure if you ask Cam Newton and Auburn, they’d tell you that Oregon was physical. He had a heck of a run at Oregon and even had a successful year in Philly, and his teams didn’t look soft at all

But honestly all of this talk about Kelly and all of OSU’s off season moves in general just scream a high level of jealousy from fans across the country. They loved laughing and pointing at Day and OSU after all the losses to scUM. Now jealousy, and I’d even say an amount of fear has crept in to many fanbases, because Day and OSU now have hired on a level that mainly Bama and UGA have done for years. OSU is getting in line with their NIL collectives, and a sleeping giant has awoken. And what makes it scarier for people, Day is hungry but also much younger and surrounding himself with young coaches to sustain success. The negative talk from others is the worry that if Day wins a Natty in ‘24 and/or ‘25, then another CFB monster would have been awaken

Slam dunk hire, but I think the long term benefit is Hartline gets to learn under Kelly as well.
Exactly what I rhought about the BOB hiring. Day knows he needs to give up play calling but also realizes that Hartline might not be ready, especially with what's on the line this season. Hartline learns play calling at the side of BOB (now Kelly) who goes off the NFL and the transition to Hartline is seamless. That's how I think Day sees it working on paper at least.

Chip will be free to experiment a lot this season with all of those weapons too. The Defense he has will get him the ball more and make up for any mistakes the Offense makes while he's sorting those things out. The 12-team playoff just got proper fucked.

Chip is a true football coach - he's not a 'system' guy. He amasses the talent and makes the best possible decision based out of what he has.

What I also love about him is he speaks his mind and he's not afraid to hurt anyone's feelings. He's not a jerk about it, but he's going to play who is better regardless of NIL, rank, age, etc.

I also think these moves help re-energize a person...to not have to kiss ass to boosters, fundraise, administration, etc. and just experiment and have fun. You're telling me our coordinators are Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles? Would love to hear the conversations those two have at lunch.
