Barrett has his limitations, but the talent and skill at Wilson's disposal is miles ahead of anything he's had in Bloomington. Also, in Bloomington his offense shifted drastically according to their talent. They would shift to being a two headed monster running team one year, and a wide open passing team the next.

I do not recall Wilson's Indiana teams gashing OSU with the run and then deciding, boy, that's working too well, let's center the offense around the inefficient parts because it worked well a decade ago at Florida (until it didn't, in spectacular fashion).

The expectations on Wilson's offense are just slightly higher now. :pimp:

Wilson can't be expected to rejuvenate the offense if he's handcuffed by Urban's antiquated playbook. The SEC (read: Saban) had him figured out by '07. Everyone else in the SEC had him figured out by '09.

I agree with the point of your post but Urban won an NC in 08 and beat Saban in the SECCG that year. It does seem like his offense works great the first few years in a new conference but he never really changes it so coaches catch up. Contrast that with Saban who seems like he's always tweaking his offense.

imo worst thing we can do is force the issue with deep throws. We need rythem and a flow and we just won't get that with drive killing deep passes that go incomplete.

For once I'd like to see us put things together in steps and not try to fix everything over one week. You just don't cure what our issues are in one week.

Maybe this week we establish our full running game to help our defense out (sweeps, jet tosses, reads, options, and with our backs) with the occasional PA pass in that 20yard range. Then against NM start out by doing much of the same plan but add in some screen packages to our RBs and also some more aggressive tunnel screens to the WRs. The defenses would be so discombobulated with the run game, the quick high percentage throws, the PA 20 yarders working off staple run plays, and the screen game that now our PA game for the home run is wide open.

That's why that option and then drop that Troy Smith use to do with us was so successful. Because we set the play up. If we don't set the long ball up then we can forget having any success with it until we figure that out.

Right now we have no opponents secondaries guessing. They don't have to worry about the Tunnel Screen or the touch passes. Until we get these guys guessing from the other teams they'll be all over the deep throws when they come. Like UFM said either today or yesterday we need to find some creativity because right now teams are all over what we want to do. I wholeheartedly agree with that.

Off topic, but this is the second time I've seen someone post New Mexico as our next opponent after Army. We're playing UNLV, not New Mexico.

It will be interesting to see how we evolve from here. I get the impression that Urban felt that the playbook was just fine, we just had some serious inadequacies in the play calling department. Maybe now, after a miserable outing, we will see him allow Wilson to begin implementing his offense. I'm not anywhere near panic mode. If anything, Urban has shown a willingness to make changes when it's clear they're necessary. Lets see if this spurs another change.

I hope it does spur a change. Clearly, there were two different playbooks in '14 when JT was running things v. Cardale. I think that some may even go so far as to say that the two very distinct playbooks may have contributed to bringing home the hardware in '14 as much as it was the payers.

I wouldn't suggest that the playbook needs tossed, but without a doubt, the order of the pages should be changed... and maybe even the "KW Appendix" gets migrated to the first chapter.

Urban has shown willingness to seek out and implement ideas and recommendations from friends in high places. That's how we ended up with Herman, Wilson, and Day (errr and Beck).

So, it's obvious Meyer had his hands deep in the first two games. It sounds weird saying that like it's a bad thing, but there are some specific tendencies that are constant regardless of OC. Those coupled, or a result of our execution issues, have been amplified as of late.

A supposed cake walk occurs for 4 weeks. I expect some new plays, but I also wonder if Meyer goes completely hands off to see how Wilson/Day perform. There's less risk now. See what happens.
