Brian Hartline: Hartline opens Fins camp on second-team O
Brian Hartline - WR - MIA - Jul. 27

Brian Hartline opened Dolphins training camp working on the second-team offense, behind Legedu Naanee and Chad Johnson.
Perhaps he was behind after missing minicamp due to an appendectomy, or maybe he's just not 100 percent yet. We expect Hartline to bypass Naanee, but there are no givens from new coaches. Take him off your sleeper list for now. Jul. 27

Two Dolphins' starters sidelined by injuries on second day of training camp
July 28, 2012|By Omar Kelly, Sun Sentinel

DAVIE ? The Miami Dolphins had not even gotten through two practices before the team lost two projected starters to injuries.

Brian Hartline, who missed most of the offseason program because of a lingering calf injury on his left leg, and an emergency appendectomy, sat out the majority of Saturday's session.

Hartline was replaced by Chad Johnson, who made a few impressive catches, as the starting receiver paired with Legedu Naanee.

Brian Hartline: Will he return to practice? He's been nursing a calf injury and missed all but one day of practice. On Monday he said he wasn't going let the pressure of getting back prematurely bother him, but make no mistake, the pressure is there. Simply, the coaching staff wants to see him practice to get a comfort level with him because it hasn't seen him very much based on the fact they're new and Hartline missed much of the offseason work as well with the calf and appendectomy.

Brian Hartline (calf) didn't participate in the Dolphins' Saturday morning scrimmage, but is expected back "soon."
Hartline hasn't practiced since the first day of Dolphins camp. He reportedly looked "fast" in Friday morning sprints, but likely won't be ready for Miami's preseason opener next Friday. Even in Miami's thin receiver corps, missing this much early practice can't be good for Hartline as he looks to endear himself to the new coaching staff. Aug. 4

Hartline not getting healthy: Receiver Brian Hartline's injury could soon start costing him more than just practice reps.

The four-year veteran has been sidelined the first eight practices with a calf injury after missing OTAs with the same aliment and missing June minicamp due to an appendectomy. And first-year coach Joe Philbin is on record as saying he doesn't owe the returning veterans anything but a chance to compete for a roster spot.

Making matters worse, free-agent receiver additions Chad Johnson (five catches, 42 yards) and Legedu Naanee (five catches, 38 yards, TD) had big performances in the weekend scrimmage. It looks like it's now or never for Hartline to start catching on.

Brian Hartline, WR - Calf - Hartline has not participated in any of the Miami training camp practices as he rehabs a calf injury. He is expected to be cleared to practice in the next 7-10 days. He has to get back on the field as quickly as possible if he want to ensure he will make the team, and to ensure he has a shot at starting. Like Garrard, if Hartline is not progressing, he could be placed on IR, using the one player removal policy if Garrard isn't, to make space to carry another wide receiver early in the year.

Miami Dolphins David Garrard and Brian Hartline feel sense of urgency to recover from injuries
By Izzy Gould SunSentinel.com
August 26, 2012

DAVIE—

As painful as it may be, consider the woes of the Miami Dolphins' passing game.

Inside the locker room it's hard not to wonder what impact David Gararrd and Brian Hartline might have had if different injuries had not sidelined the quarterback and wide receiver, respectively.

Hartline, who has done nothing but rehabilitation work on a lingering calf injury, began pushing a little more Sunday playing catch at times, and warming up with the team for the first time.

Hartline has had very little opportunity to show Philbin & Co. what he can do. He participated in voluntary workouts until June when an emergency appendectomy forced him to miss a mandatory minicamp.

Now a lingering calf injury has sidelined him for all of training camp.

On Sunday, Hartline began taking steps toward a possible return.

"I did more than yesterday, did a little more today," Hartline said. "Hopefully, I can keep stair stepping this thing. We're in the right direction, but again it's just day-to-day."
Now with a little more spring in his step and a sense of urgency to produce, perhaps Hartline is on the cusp of taking a larger leap toward a return.

"It's a big year for me personally, and for the team," Hartline said. "I've got all kinds of directions going on. This is definitely not what I want to be doing right now."

Hartline was asked if he felt like he was on track to contribute to the Dolphins this season."Yeah, I would not see myself not doing that," Hartline said, "just the sooner the better that's all."

Brian Hartline back at practice
Updated: August 31, 2012
Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- On a day filled with personnel shake-ups around the NFL, the Miami Dolphins welcomed a veteran receiver to practice.

Brian Hartline, one of the team's best pass-catchers the past three seasons, rejoined workouts Friday after missing all four exhibition games because of a left calf injury. He bolsters a receiving group that was lackluster in training camp.

"We've had some rough times," Hartline said. "Maybe I can add a little spark to the group to ignite us and get us going."

Hartline's injury sidelined him for spring drills, and he aggravated it on the first day of training camp. He also had an appendectomy this summer, and said it was difficult to sit out during the transition under first-year coach Philbin.

"It has been awful," he said. "It's a whole new era, and I want to be part of it. It's a big year for the team."

Barring a setback, Hartline said, he'll be ready for the opener. The fourth-year pro has 109 career receptions and an average of 15.3 yards per catch, and he could provide Tannehill with the sort of deep threat the Dolphins lacked in the exhibition season.

"We're excited about getting our hands on him," Philbin said. "We watched him last year, thought he has a chance to be a productive player, thought he played fast and caught the ball well."

Hartline declined to predict how quickly he'll get in sync with Tannehill but said he's comfortable with the offense introduced by Philbin.

"I don't think I'm behind at all," Hartline said. "I've been to every meeting. I ask more questions than anybody else. As long as the body's ready, I'm ready."

Video interview- Hartline discusses injury

Back into the Dolphins' volatile mix walked one very relieved Brian Hartline.

Remember him?

Out all training camp with a left calf injury, Hartline finally made it back onto the field for a full practice, and not a moment too soon.

"I knew I would play this year," Hartline said. "I was just hoping it was in Miami."

Having already missed the bulk of offseason work following a bout of appendicitis, Hartline could have been in danger of being placed on injured reserve had the calf issue lingered.

It happened to Will Allen two years ago, even though doctors believed the former Dolphins cornerback would be ready two or three weeks into the regular season.

Did Hartline ever fear he might run out of time?

"I was counting the weeks," he said. "It's a new regime. They're trying to rebuild and do things. You never know where they're at in their stance on you."

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin played it cool, as usual, when asked about Hartline's long-awaited return.

Philbin has pored over last year's film of Hartline, allowing he "has a chance to be a productive player."

While Hartline said flatly he was up to speed on the new West Coast offense, Philbin said he's "obviously a little behind from a reps standpoint."

Hartline spent part of July catching passes from Ryan Tannehill during non-mandatory sessions, but Philbin downplayed that as well.

"Throwing against air and playing against a defense are two different things," Philbin said. "I wouldn't be banking a lot on that."

Hartline Happy To Be Playing Catch Up
By The Finsiders on September 14, 2012

Steelers_Dolphins_Foo_Reyn_t607-250x192.jpg

As his absence extended into training camp, the Brian Hartline Watch kicked into high gear. When would he be able to ditch the medicine ball and get back on to the field? It was a slow-moving process, but he?s back at 100-percent.

Jesse Agler caught up with Hartline to find out how difficult his rehab was and what he needs to do build synergy with Ryan Tannehill.

The fourth-year receiver made it back in time for the Dolphins? Week 1 game in Houston, of course, but he had to cut it pretty close, returning to practice just in time to see the field.

?It?s over and done with it, but there was a point in time where I was like, ?Man, I just didn?t think this stuff was going to end.? Hartline said. ?Like my teammates kept telling me, ?All this bad stuff going on, you?re going to have some good fortune.? So, hopefully that?s in the future.?
