OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

Has he built the single best position group in OSU history?

2016 DB room? Lattimore, Arnette, Conley, Ward, Fuller and Hooker.

That's 5 1st rounders, a NFL DRoY, two Pro Bowlers, with presumably a third when Fuller earns a nod in the next year or two.

That group played the 3rd hardest schedule in the country and produced the 3rd best total defense, despite the amount of time they were on the field against equal competition because of the clusterfuck of an offense.

Might want to see how he works as an OC first before giving him a head coaching job.

No need when you recruit like he does.

His career path would mirror Dabo/Urban in that regard.

A lot of schools are going to recognize his talent and come calling. Just like with Hafley who was only a coordinator for 1 season. The question is whether Brian is content at OSU and lives being a part of program or if he has aspirations beyond being a badass position coach.

Yeah, that should still be the gold standard until we see full careers from these current WRs.

I also thought about the '95 (iirc) DB room when you had a Shawn Springs tweak an ankle and get replaced by a true freshman Antoine Winfield. A case could also be made for the lights out secondary of the '98 team (4 NFL guys when Winfield was a SR) and the true freshman nickel back was Nate Clements (future 1st rounder).

The 2005 LB room was pretty crowded with a bunch of future NFL guys.

Interesting topic. It will be fun to watch it play out and kind of scary that we can already see the talent at WR and ask this type of question.

EDIT*** I looked up the '98 team secondary

CB1 1999 1st round; Antoine Winfield
CB2 2000 1st round: Ahmed Plummer
S1 1999 4th round; Damon Moore
S2 2000 4th round: Gary Berry
Nickel 2001 1st round: Nate Clements

That was a pretty damn stacked room

I think Hartline should be the next Co-OC. He could go the route of Fickell, who consistently produced AAs, award winners, and first round LBs year after year as a position coach. Of course it’s when he became a DC that he started getting heat (rightfully so). But he stuck with it, won a championship and has built an impressive top 10 Cincy team.

if Hartline can stick with the WR room for another year or two, I would like to see him start getting mentorship from Wilson on taking over the OC duties.

I'd bet even money he's getting mentorship right now for taking over OC duties.

He’s good at recruiting and developing receivers because he was a successful receiver. There are other positions on a football team. What makes you think he’d be good at recruiting to those positions just because he’s a good recruiter of receivers?

Can he call an offense? Maybe he can. I don’t know. Maybe it would be a good idea to see if he can. Working as an OC would give us an answer.

Can he hire a staff? He hasn’t been coaching for very long. Does he have the necessary contacts to do that? He’s in just his fourth year as a position coach and you think he’s ready to take over a team? Come on, man.

What made Clemson confident Dabo could lead their team after promoting him from WR coach?

What made Bowling Green confident Urban was the guy when the highest level he got was WR coach?

A lot of programs are willing to overlook an extensive resume with OC/DC or even HC experience if you’ve shown elite ability in your current role.

Hartline has shown elite ability not just as a coach but as a recruiter. For a middling program, you take a chance he can utilize his contacts within the sport to surround himself with similar coaches. You could do a helluva lot worse…..

He’s a guy teams will definitely be kickin the tires on.

Urban was in coaching for 15 years before he took the Bowling Green job.

PJ Fleck was a GA here in 2006 before spending just 6 seasons as a WR coach, landing the WMU job in 2013.

Sean Lewis went from GA at Akron in 2011 to HC at Kent St in 2018. He did hold a co-OC title in name only for a couple years between BGSU & Syracuse, but everyone knows Dino Babers was calling plays.

It's not that unprecedented.

Hartline did the GA stint in 2017 and has been the WR coach for 4 seasons. Another year or two, one with a pass game coordinator title, one as co-OC, and he'll be the hottest candidate under 40.

Have no idea what happens here, but Hartline will get offered head coaching jobs this off-season.

Hope to god Day’s relationship and his love of OSU keep him in Columbus.

You say another year or two. That’s not that crazy to me. But the other post I quoted says this off-season.

Fair enough. I missed that post from overnight Saturday/Sunday. Agree that it may be premature to declare this off season.

I was commenting more to the point that Hartline isn't a guy that's going to have to pay his dues for 12 or 15 years.

I don’t think so either. The game has changed so much. After he sends another crop of players to the league as high draft picks, they’ll come calling. Especially if they want to tap in to Coach Day’s offense.
