Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

What I do like about this game just like you said is the fact that this gives our players some experience in being in a close game and doing what needed to be done to WIN. Every close game in the past 3 years were blow out loses (minus michigan 06). We needed this just for the fact of knowing we can battle and win the ugly game. Now of course it wasn't done on purpose or anything but this team definately needs to know that just returning 20 starters doesn't win you ball games you have to earn it...

I really liked the pressure we brought today as i've said but we have to wrap up and tackle, but that shouldn't be a problem against Sanchez. What bothered me was the bunch formation that they ran for the TD. I'm not a football genuis but do know a little (especially on the defensive side) but when I saw that bunch formation I said outloud Toss sweep!!!!!! They did it twice and both times for a big gainer. We've got to learn lessons here lol.... While OU had a lot of fluke plays they had a couple very solid nice runs as result of either individual skill or team effort. It's not all because of poor play by the buckeyes.

Despite the problems, facing a little adversity might be a good thing for this team in the long run.

:io:

Good point, the silver cloud here may be that this game was a wake up call that will really motivate the team next week. I heard a lot negative crap from the radio, a few fans and elsewhere. The positives seem to get overlooked. Let's talk about what those are for a while here.

Here are a few
  • 4 interceptions - thanks you gentleman
  • a punt return run back for a TD - thanks ray
  • Sanzo going 4 for 4 today - thanks dane
  • No one got hurt (I think - how's Grant Schwartz?)

I was flat out shocked at how much time Todd had on several throws and still couldn;t find any open receivers. For those that were there, was he missing open players, or were the receivers not getting ANY seperation?

It's pretty shocking, even without Beanie, that the offense would struggle this badly in EVERY phase of the game.

Hopefully, we see a better team next weekend.

And give Shaun Lane some props, kid has done nothing but excel in everything the team has asked him to do.

I was watching one of the halftime reports on ESPN, and our game final score came across the scroll bar at the bottom. Usually it has the score, the leaders and their stats and maybe a HUGE play in the final minute of the 4th. NO! Not ours. It had our score, then our score in the 3rd quarter, then it went on to mention our upcoming game with USC and how we have lost the last 5 meetings. WTF is that about?!? I understand its ESPN and all, but damn, they didn't give that kind of detailed report on the scroll bar about any other top 10 team.

Sorry man. Unfortunately for the college football world, right now the perception of Ohio State is reality. Until Ohio State goes out and takes care of USC, nothing is going to change :(

I got to watch this game this morning, and then we headed to the coast for four three hours. (It's oh-so-hard to live close to the coast. )

My thoughts on the game today (probably re-hashing most of what has been said even though I haven't read much today):

I had disappointments, but I also feel vindicated in my depth of trust for Coach Tressel and staff. I never really thought the Bucks would lose this game. Should they have looked better? Certainly. However, I'm feeling (and hoping) that this is our poor presentation for the year. In my myopic view of the overall situation, I'm sort of glad that there were struggles and adversity today. I hope that this instills a greater sense of urgency and vigilance in the members of this squad. Beanie's absence creates quite a literal and figurative hole, but the team persevered and overcame. I'm proud of the turnover margin. The defense made me feel proud.

I hope and pray that the offense can continue on the good points and eliminate the bad.

It's just the more I think about it, the more "glad" I am that this occurred now. I don't believe this will hurt us moving into the game against SC.

Go Bucks!

Both things were happening - on different plays.

Thats what I'm sayin about Homan Grad. Although picking between Homan/JL/ or Freeman I'd prolly pick Homan too.

Yertle/Buckeyemike- Agree 100 percent.

Like Yertle said how many times did Boo run out of trouble and lob horrible passes to wide open recievers? Had those recievers held onto the ball...... Everything else Yertle said is exactly how I feel about this game.

Not to get on any of our boys but like Yertle pointed out again Robo/Hartline have really not produced that well on a consistent basis for a while now. I think Robo may be doing us more harm than good being on the field because I do NOT think he's 100 percent. He was not aggressive going up to get balls today, and I think that shoulder is giving him trouble. If thats the case get Posey or Sanzo out there who is 100 percent and ready to roll.

I think Small right now is the best reicever/playmaker we have on offense (until 28 comes back). We've got to find ways to get him the ball a little more I think. Why not trying some of the things that Ginn did with someone like small or thomas or Saine? That would jsut give another look for the defenses to look at.

As for our Recievers Billmac- Robo/Hartline both dropped passes today. I think I counted atleast 4 dropped passes (one that would've been 7, but intsead was a shank kick). However, most of the time the recievers are just not able to fight off the coverages and find the open spots. They need to do a little better job sittin in vacant spots and not running around so much. Sometimes ending your route or continuing it is better than doing a scripted route.

I think this game was a good experience, because we came back from a defict and reacted good when we where behind. Which is something we struggled with in the pass two NC games and against Illinois. I know it was Ohio, but it might come in handy sometime next week...to already know the feeling of a close come from behind win.:oh:

It was nice that OU missed or dropped about 7 or 8 wide open passes, It was nice that we got 5 turnovers.
It was nice tha we started playing at the 9 minute mark of the 3rd Qtr. At one point I thought wth is this the Illinois game of 07 ?
And lest I forget As the Drum major broke to lead the I dotter to his post, the sousaphone player and the musician behind him swapped a lo 5 . :tongue2:

OOps I thought that Herron and Saine both did a good job running the ball.

I did not see the first half and deleted the game from the DVR as soon as it was over, so my thoughts are only in regards to the 2nd half.

What I liked:

We had multiple interceptions. If the ball came our defenders way they caught it.

Herron. He runs with attitude and plays bigger than he is. He is my number 2 back. Saine belongs on the field with Pryor, so they both can utilize their speed.

I was very happy for Small to get the TD on the punt return. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Coming from behind for a win. I don't think it makes a difference coming behind from a lesser or tougher opponent. I'm happy to get a come from behind win early in the season. Lets you know you can do it in case you need to later in the year.

What I did not like:

Offense seemed up and down. Need to get in and stay in a rhythm.

Defense appeared to struggle somewhat against the spread. I like how they tightened things up toward the end, but thoughts of IL ran through my head.

Overall I am confident the coaching staff and the seniors will have the team ready for USC. Should be a good game.
