Rose Bowl ALWAYS takes Big Ten #1 and Pac Ten #1...that's just the tradition. It's been that way for years.

Um, no not since the BCS. Rose took Big 10 and Pac 10 every year since the first one until the BCS came along, but even then the BCS has liked to preserve the tradition but there's no set rule stating they are required to take the B10 P10 champs. You might want to check your facts before posting:

2006: Texas 41 USC 38
2005:
Texas 38 Michigan 37
2003:
Oklahoma 34 Washington State 14
2002:
Miami 37 Nebraska 14 (NCG)

They fixed one of the issues with what you are stating by adding the extra game. Also the rules state the auto bids for the Pac 10 and Big 10 go to the rose(only bowl with 2 auto bids) UNLESS a team goes to the title then it goes by bowl pick order for at large teams. All of the games you show have a team that was pulled to the title and then the 2002 game was previous to the extra game.

You might want to check your context before you try and ridicule someone. Talking down to someone who is answering your question - because were ignorant/unaware of the setup yourself - is pretty rich.

03 & 05 saw the Rose Bowl pick their traditional b10/p10 champ, and the BCS taking away one of those teams for a NC game.
02 & 06 were title game matchups where no selection was made, it was an automatic berth based on a formula.

The point remains, OSU is going to the Rose Bowl if they win out.

Ahh, you've got me. I just thought about that game too.

Let me rephrase it, the Rose Bowl ALWAYS takes the Big Ten #1 vs the Pac Ten #1 when they can. That year, USC went to the national championship, and no one else from the Pac 10 was appealing enough so they took Texas.

That was a great game too. Good catch.

Also think about it, we had 4 straight Big 10 titles, so we would have gone to the Rose bowl 4 times with that logic. 2 times we were in the NCG so those are ruled out, but the other 2 times we went to the Fiesta because it there was a better matchup. The reason I asked was because everyone's saying the Rose is a lock so I was just wondering if there was an official rule change saying that the B10 P10 champs would be taken by rule unless one of them was going to the NCG.

OSU was not the #1 team in 05 or 08. Penn State was, and had first dibs on the Rose Bowl. When it was available, they went. When it was busy hosting the NC game, they went to Florida.
ic. 2 times we were in the NCG so those are ruled out, but the other 2 times we went to the Fiesta because it there was a better matchup.
Completely false.

Both year's you are talking about we shared the B10 title and the team that beat us went to the Rose Bowl. 08- PSU 05- PSU would have gone except for the lack of the extra game as Jwins said.

We never went to the fiesta because it "was the better match up."

There has been no change, this has been the rule the entire time during the BCS save when the Rose hosted the NC

The Fiesta Bowl gets the Big 12 champ, the Sugar Bowl gets the SEC champ, The Orange bowl gets the ACC champ

If a bowl loses one of their auto tie in's they get the first choice of at large teams but they aren't allowed to select the 2nd place team in a conference that also loses their tie in.

So let's say for shits and giggles

Texas finishes the year somehow as the BCS #1
Alabama finishes as the BCS #2

Those 2 go to the NC obviously

The Fiesta Bowl, who lost #1 Texas now has the first choice of any BCS eligible team that isn't tied in, so they can't take the ACC, Big Ten or Pac 10 first place team. They also cannot take Florida or LSU (or any other SEC team) because the Sugar Bowl retains rights to select from that conference. The Sugar bowl would have to agree to give up Florida or LSU, which would probably be stupid of them to do given how much support they have. So the Fiesta Bowl is basically stuck either with the #2 team from the ACC, Big Ten, Pac 10 or Big 12, or they could get the Big East champ or one of the mid majors if they are eligible

A lot of (ignorant to the rule) people were bitching at the Rose Bowl at the end of the 07 season, OSU went to the NC with LSU. The Rose Bowl retained the first at large selection because OSU was the #1 team. People wanted to see Georgia against SC in the Rose Bowl but Georgia were not an option because the Sugar Bowl still had the first dibs to the team from the conference they lost. Hence why the Rose bowl decided to go with Illinois (over Kansas, WVU, Hawaii).

Basically there are very intricate rules in place to make sure each of the 4 bowls get their fair share of big time teams

Just ignore the guy. I think he's being an idiot on purpose. There isn't a true Buckeye fan that doesn't know the Big Ten/Rose Bowl tie-in. This thread should be about Iowa and Ohio State, not about an idiot poster...

So on that note, I'm hoping to get to skull session tomorrow. I expect it to be rockin!!! After that's over i'm heading straight to the stadium. I either want to watch the band come into the rotunda, or watch the team take the field to warm up. Both are awesome. I love watching the team enter to hells bells, but I also enjoy watching the band enter the stadium, and they usually happen at the same time. What to do??? Any ideas?

I'm so excited for this game tomorrow. Everything is riding on this game. When was the last time that we were playing a game in The Shoe that we knew if we won we would go to the Rose Bowl? In '07 we thought we were going to the Rose Bowl, but that was at Michigan anyway. But we knew we still had an outside shot at the NCG. This year there is no outside shot. In '06 we knew we were going to the NCG and that the loser of the game was going to the Rose Bowl (That has to be the only game in Ohio Stadium history where whoever LOST was going to the Rose Bowl). In '02 again we were playing for the NCG, not the Rose Bowl. In '96 we clinched on the road at Indiana. 1994 - 1991 no. In 1990 we would have gone had we beaten Michigan, but we needed help from Iowa...they did lose, but we didn't know for certain going into The Game. 89-87 not good years. 1986...there it is. 1986 6-1 Michigan played 7-0 Ohio State at Ohio State. If my thought process is correct, that is the last time Ohio State played a game at home knowing that if they won they were going to the Rose Bowl. The 1986 game was also like this years game in that both teams clinched the Rose Bowl if they won. A tie would have sent Ohio State to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State lost 26-24. None of the players on this team were even born yet win this happened.

So this is the first time in 23 years that Buckeye fans could take Roses to a game in The Shoe, knowing that if we won, we were going to the Rose Bowl.

Awesome.

If i'm wrong please somebody correct me and bonk me on the head.

I'm just excited about how much history we are about to make tomorrow!!!

Go Bucks!!!
Beat Iowa!!!

...Don't let them through that line. We have to win THIS GAME TODAY.

...Hail! Hail! The gang's all here. So let's WIN THAT OLD CONFERENCE NOW!

I can't wait to see the Skull Session today, the last two have been pretty empty. Is it bad luck to bring roses to this game? Or do you just not show them until we win or its in the bag? I also have tickets for The Game and I will spend a bundle on roses this week to make sure every Buckeye fan I see rose-less will have one inside Michigan Stadium!!!! Go Bucks!!!! And please win Wiscy so we can finish the deal next week!!!!
