Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

I read a couple pages back about how we aren't elite program over the last ten years but seriously we have done some work. Let's not forgot we have won four BCS bowl games against teams from BCS conferences. Texas A&M and Kansas St won the Big 12 and we took care of them. We beat up a Notre Dame team who was a lucky play away from beating the all mighty USC. Then there Miami. Ppl say we got a call but it was confirmed to be the right call made. The only programs that have been really dominant are USC and LSU. Oklahoma has lost 4 straight bowls, one against an at-large team from a weak conference. Florida has won 4 BCS bowl games but also have gotta dominated by the Big Ten(1-4 record) and the 'U', and Texas has only been in 2 BCS bowls. Those are the some of the best programs in the nation but all of them has had blemishes on their resume this decade. We got blown out but people act like the buckeyes are the only elite team USC blown out. They did beat Oklahoma 55-17, went into #6 auburn and shut them out 23-0, gave Michigan problems in both Rose bowls. The way I see it anyone going to the Coliseum is going to struggle because they have have the experience and just a great football. Ever since '05 our swagger and "it" factor has disappeared but over the 10 years our accomplished still warrant us a spot with the elite. Sorry for the long post just letting a rant out.

Absolutely right, there's no question we're an elite program. The question is how do we get over the hump in the big game, as we've had an on going issue with doing so?

The answer I think is reorganization, consolidation and a return to Buckeye pride.

:oh:

How does the USC loss fit in with the 2 National Championship losses?

Hi, new guy here. I'm a fan of college football, no team in particular. I grew up on Big 10 football in its heyday.

As my subject states: How does the USC loss fit in with the 2 National Championship losses for Ohio State and the Big 10?

I'm curious because the Big 10 just looks so dated with its collective approach to offense and I'd even say defense for that matter. So what do you guys think about this latest Ohio State loss?

Thanks, and BTW you guys have a fun forum here. :)

I still rank the debacle in the desert as my worst loss as a tOSU fan. That was like a swift kick in the garbage.

'96 scUM game #2, MSU in '98 #3 with this probably #4.

Last year vs. LSU didn't hurt as much to me because it was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year and I was just happy to be there.

We scored 3 points, they scored 35, not a whole lot I can think of, I was pretty drunk.

What I gather is that with the proper person's in place OSU is just as dangerous as anyone on offense. However, with some other people we become much too conservative and predictable. Example is when Troy was here we were exciting, open, and diverse. Just not at QB though because we did have 3 NFL caliber recievers as well. We have decent to good players right now at those positions and an all american in the backfield so we try to beat people with a running game and solid defense.

On defense I wouldn't think there'll be a problem once we get some more beef on the interior. We're just missing those active and disrupting defensive lineman right now which forces us to either bring more heat or sit back and let teams pick us apart.

The overall schemes need work (especially on offense), but on defense I think its more of a production standpoint on the defensive line more than anything. Our DB's and Linebackers are just as good as any but when you get to that D-line the drop off in production is very alarming IMO. Guys like Rose, and Heyward haven't been productive as we'd hoped. You add that with very disappointed DT play and we're just not generating the push and surge that takes this defense from great to elite.

I think the playcalling becomes much more diverse and explosive with the right peices in place, and unfortunately I personally think the coaches don't think those peices are in place yet. With this being the case I feel the coaches aren't really sure how to call the game with the current players.

I left for NYC Saturday morning at 8. I got back this afternoon after 3, and [strike]missed[/strike] skipped 80 pages of this thread. I honestly was going to read them if we had won. What I would really like to know is how many bannings did I miss? :tongue2:

In other words, I would bet this has been posted, but amongst the tomfoolery in this thread which may/may not have happened, here are THE Ohio State Buckeyes' last 6 losses, which have occured since September of the 2005 season...

2005 vs. Texas, National Champions
2005 at Penn State, BCS bowl
2006 vs. Florida, National Champions
2007 vs. Illinois, BCS bowl
2007 vs. LSU, National Champions
2008 at USC, fill in the blank

We haven't lost to Appalachian State. We haven't lost to Notre Dame. We haven't lost any trap games. We've won 35 games in the time it took to lose the 6 I listed above. I feel the pain in losing each and every one of these games, but if you think we as fans invest time and energy into cheering for the Buckeyes, take the time to think the emotional and physical investment these guys have made and the sacrifices and decisions that go into suiting up for JT in the Horseshoe on Saturday afternoons. Let's sit back and watch, so that we can enjoy. If we remain overly critical and expect perfection, we will grow old too soon and be bitter Buckeye fans. I'm sure you have sat near them at one point or another and promised yourself you would never become that person. See it through! It's a game. And unless the OSU staff has ever issued you a jersey with a number on it, it's not your game. Just be sure to watch them every week and cheer them on. They need us right now more than ever.
