Ohio State 79, #21 Syracuse 65 (Final)

Hello from an SU fan

First and foremost, good luck to the Buckeyes tomorrow night. I hope both young teams have a great game and provide some excitement.

As a Syracuse alum who has followed SU basketball for 23 years, I can honestly say this is the most talented SU team I have ever seen (even more so than the 2003 championship team). The team literally doesn't have an area of weakness in terms of talented players on the court.

I see a lot of misinformed posts on here. One poster called Donte Greene "undersized." He is 6-11. Basically, he is a 6-11 forward than can shoot from the perimeter and drive to the hoop like a small forward. He is also a very good shot blocker. His defense needs to improve, though.

I read where someone else said they are streaky shooters. SU has averaged appx. 55% shooting and appx. 43% from three-point range this year.

Someone else said Jonny Flynn had a great game against Siena and then struggled against St. Joe's and Fordham. Nothing could be further from the truth. That post obviously came from someone reading game stats, not someone who actually watched the game. Flynn took over those games with outstanding defense and some of the most amazing passes/assists I have seen in college basketball. He only took four shots against St. Joe's (including the game winner). You don't need to put the ball up as a PG when you get everyone else as involved as he does.

All in all, SU is a young team that is maturing very fast. They had a lot of turnovers in their first game and, by game three, that turnover margin was cut in half. Their defense is coming together and they looked extremely active in the 2-3 against Fordham. The more the team plays together and the more the defense improves, the more comfortable I feel calling this team a top-5 caliber team. All five starters average in double figures for scoring, and 6-9 Rick Jackson, 6-1 Scoop Jardine and 6-9 Kris Ongenaet are providing productive minutes off the bench (Rick Jackson had 9 points and 7 boards in 10 minutes last game).

Just some perspective from an SU fan. :)

Good luck OSU!

John

Score Prediction

After all that rambling, I figured I should at least provide a score prediction. :)

I'm going to call it Syracuse 78 OSU 72. Both teams are young, but based on what I've seen so far, SU seems to be more talented. I guess we'll see how both teams handle the big stage. :)

A lot of Syracuse fans on other message boards are feeding this notion that this team is better than the 02-03 team. There is no way in hell. Not even close.

And please tell me, how many times have you seen them play?

I've seen every SU game played over the past 23 years. Trust me: this SU team is more talented top to bottom than the 2003 team was.

PG Flynn is more talented than McNamara (he was a frosh).
SG Devendorf is more talented than Duany.
SF Harris is less talented than Anthony
PF Greene is more talented than Warrick
C Onuaku is more talented than Forth

BENCH
Jardine is more talented than Pace/Edelin
Jackson is more talented than McNeil

This year's team is more talented in every position except SF; however, Paul Harris is a five-star recruit and MD's All American who is a better rebounder and defender than Anthony. He isn't the offensive force Anthony was, though.

Considering that I'm a Syracuse basketball fan, I've seen them play quite a bit.

Flynn is not better than GMac.
Devendorf at his best is better than Duany, but he also makes stupid decisions that result in turnovers.
Harris is so far less talented than Melo that the discussion should stop right there.....and that isn't even a knock on Harris.
Greene now isn't better than Warrick that year. It's close, but not yet.
I'm better than Forth, and Onuaku is a freaking beast.

Jardine isn't better than either Pace or Edelin. Pace carried us through a couple games in the tourney, and Edelin made GMac tick.
Jackson probably is better than McNeil.

Carmelo was the best player Syracuse has seen in a long, long time. GMac is probably second on a shorter list. Any team with those 2 on it is going to be hard to beat.....and won't be beat by a team that is 3 games into the year and looks to be pretty mediocre on defense. That's another area where the 02-03 team blows this one away.

These are strong statements...That was a NC team, this team struggled to beat St. Joes...

This was coming from SU boards...I see him listed at about 6'8' 210, and is game is more in the mold of a SF...Obviously you have seen him play more than me, I was just going off what I saw of him on recruiting sites, and then what your fans were saying after a couple games...

I read where someone else said they are streaky shooters. SU has averaged appx. 55% shooting and appx. 43% from three-point range this year.

Once again going off what I have been seeing on your boards...I do know that Devendorf is a very streaky shooter from what I have seen, and it sounded like Flynn was as well...

Not to sound like a broken record, but I was going off of your boards...

We all appreciate the insight...But I was just going off what I was reading and seeing in the box score and what I knew from seeing some of the guys last year and and what I know from some of the recruiting, and hearing from our coaches...

What I do know is that we will see lots of zone in this game, from both teams, it will probably come down to who ends up shooting the ball better from the perimeter...But we also have a size advantage at every position...

I do agree it should be a very interesting game...

I got to see the game vs. my alma mater and Donte Green sure looked pretty good. Harris is an obvious talent, but having a complimentary scorer likes Green on the inside who can also step out and knock down a 3 is a huge benefit. Fordham had no answer for him, especially once Sebastian Greene got into foul trouble. Harris was quiet but still got to the line and hit his FTs. Flynn was solid...something like 6-7 assists without any turnovers. He did not look like much of a scoring threat but he can definitely distribute. Syracuse did a great job on the glass against Fordham as well.

I have to give 'Cuse the edge with the game being played at MSG. OSU is going to need good shooting from outside and they are going to need Hunter and Koufos to play good defense and board well...I just don't know if a team that is this young can go over to NY and hang with a talented and well-coached squad like Syracuse.

Hey Wad what did you think of their big guy...AO...

Is he going to dominate our guys with his bulk, which we would be forced to play DL?

Onuaku certainly is a big boy...and I certainly don't how we will play things when we are in man to man situations...I don't know if Hunter will D up Greene or if we will try and stick Lighty on him and give up a ton of size. I imagine in our zone scheme they will try and push Green out and use Koufos height to take away Onuaku inside. He is strictly a halfcourt guy at this point and his point are going to be of the lunch pail variety typically...but he is supposedly a very smart post player so it will be interesting to see how we contain him without letting Green kill us.

Well I do know that we will be seeing lots of zone tonight...I just hope that doesnt hurt us with letting Green shoot over the top of some of the smaller wing players, and I hope we are able to rebound out of it...

I really think we might try and run them, as they only play 6 and the big guy could get tired if we run them up and down the floor...

100% guarantee that Green will not hit a single shot over the zone tonight. Not one.
