College Basketball Odds, Picks & Predictions for Ohio State vs. Nebraska (Wednesday, Jan. 18)

Ohio State needs to rebound, and outside of matching up with Minnesota at home — whom it lost to — Nebraska is the next best bet for an “easy” win.
That said, Lincoln, Nebraska is not the easiest place to play, and the Cornhuskers carry a pretty strong defensive squad.
Unfortunately, the Cornhuskers are only good when it comes to not fouling. Teams are shooting well against them, so OSU will probably come out on fire.
In addition, the Buckeyes have a top-four offense because they are sound when it comes to taking care of the ball and crashing the glass offensively.
Since Nebraska struggles in these areas, the Buckeyes should take advantage and notch a win and a cover.

What To Watch: Ohio State looks to end losing skid with visit to Nebraska

SCOUTING NEBRASKA

* Quality Of Opponent: Struggling, but very competitive at home. For the fourth consecutive year, Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg flipped half of his roster in an attempt to find something – anything – that will allow the Huskers to move out of the bowels of lethargy.
The team went 10-22 last year with star freshman guard Bryce McGowens going to the NBA after one year. His brother, Trey, and another high scoring guard, Alonzo Verge, also moved on to the professional ranks. When the dust settled, the only returning starter was senior forward Derrick Walker. Hoiberg scoured everywhere he could look to fill out his roster once again.
The mainstays have been Walker and Alabama transfer Juwan Gary at the forward positions with North Dakota State transfer Sam Griesel, SMU transfer Emmanuel Bandoumel and returning sophomore C.J. Wilcher at the guard spots. Gary is out right now with a shoulder injury. Griesel missed the last game against Purdue due to a hip injury, but is expected to play against Ohio State.
Also in the mix are junior guard Keisei Tominaga a
nd sophomore forwards Wilhelm Breidenbach (6-10) and Blaise Keita (6-11).
At full strength, Nebraska took nonconference wins over Florida State (75-58), Boston College (88-67) and also won at instate rival Creighton (63-53), which was ranked seventh nationally at the time. There were also losses to the likes of St. John’s, Oklahoma, Memphis and Kansas State.
Nebraska showed its mettle at home by playing No. 4 Purdue down to the wire in a 65-62 loss and by defeating Iowa 66-50. The Huskers’ other Big Ten win was an 81-79 win in overtime at Minnesota.
Since that loss, Nebraska has dropped a home game to Illinois (76-50) and a road game at No. 3 Purdue (73-55). The Huskers played the Purdue game without Griesel and Gary.
Walker had 22 points and seven rebounds and Griesel scored 17 points in the win at Minnesota. Walker had 19 points and six rebounds, while Tominaga had 16 points in the loss at Purdue.
The Huskers are 13th in the Big Ten in scoring (66.4 points per game), 10th in scoring defense (67.2 ppg), 10th in field goal percentage (44.0 percent) and 14th in three-point percentage (30.1 percent). Nebraska is 6-2 at home this season.
* Ohio State-Nebraska Series: Ohio State leads the all-time series with Nebraska 20-5. The Buckeyes are 10-2 in Columbus and 7-3 in Lincoln. OSU is 16-3 against Nebraska since the Huskers joined the Big Ten in 2011-12. In five previous seasons under Holtmann, OSU is 6-1 against Nebraska.
Pinnacle Bank Arena opened for the 2013-14 season. OSU is 4-1 in that venue since its opening.
