Ohio State at Iowa, Saturday, 8 PM, ESPN2

"On this possession alone this referee has blown his whistle seven times."

Did I hear that right?

Well, it's on ESPN2 and someone has to carry the torch.

Matta is too soft on his players. Some of it's on them. A lot of it is on him.

I can take the whip to my horse all the way down the home stretch. If he doesn't have the talent to win, I'll still lose. For whatever reason, Thad isn't getting the horses he used to get his first decade at Ohio State.

Iowa's lost 3 straight games, they're missing the conference's leading scorer tonight, and they lead the Buckeyes by 11 at halftime. :ohbrother:
Yeah, and the Bucks just won a game, against a team they lost to before, so they can feel all fat and happy about themselves as if they've actually gotten better. They can get back to half-assing it.

Yeah, the stuff he's praising that took place 5 years, or more, ago. He's right, Matta can coach. The problem has been the players he's (not) getting. Coaching will only take you so far, as we continue to see in recent years.
Disagree. Matta proved right away when he got here that he can win with lesser talent. This team just doesn't play good fundamental basketball. If they did they'd at least look closer like a decent Wisconsin team or Matta's pre-Greg Oden squads. Those Terrence Dials-led teams that Matta had would kill to players like Marc Loving, JaQuan Lyle, or Kam Williams. Nah I definitely think coaching is more of the issue here. Matta either needs to get rid of his assistants or step down himself if he's unwilling to.

That's what irks me - hustle plays. You don't have to be the most talented guy to hustle. There's no excuse for being lackadaisical.

A good coach makes players better than they think they can be. Other than Evan Turner, who has Thad done that for?

Tom Izzo benched Draymond Green to teach him a lesson about effort and the Spartans lost that game. In a recent episode of The Journey they had a segment about MSU senior Nairn (yes I know he's got a silly name, and nickname) teaching the freshmen about the importance of consistency in effort, attitude, and focus. Is there anything about Buckeye basketball in the past few years that makes you think they're teaching the importance of effort, attitude, and focus?

And that's the problem. This bunch isn't talented enough to get by on talent alone. They need maximum effort, and we're not seeing it to this point tonight.
