The New High Street

Developers are transforming North High Street from the Short North to the campus area.

It seems everyone loves North High Street these days—everyone, that is, except drivers. The stretch of the Columbus road from the Short North through the Ohio State University campus is a sea of jackhammers, constructions cranes, orange barrels and workers in hard hats, as developers do their best to meet thegrowing demand for offices, high-rise residences, hip eateries and new off-campus housing on the north side. “It’s where office tenants want to be, it’s where restaurants want to be, it’s where residents want to be,” says Mike Fitzpatrick, president of Columbus-based developer Elford Development Ltd. “There’s a national movement of people going back to the core city.”

Here’s a look at the projects along North High Street from the Short North through the North Campus area.

MIRROR LAKE RENOVATION PROJECT FINISHED AHEAD OF OHIO STATE MOVE-IN DAY

95172_h.jpeg

When Ohio State students return to campus within the week, they'll be greeted by the return of an iconic campus landmark, but with a new look.

Ohio State's mirror lake has been closed for nearly two years for renovations following the death of student Austin Singletary, but the fences are finally down, allowing for a clean look at the newly-renovated lake.

The lake now features a soft bottom and gradual slopes, with the shore lined with plants and vegetation, providing both a more natural look and increased safety, after a broken neck was the cause of Singletary's tragic death.

There is also a bench honoring Singletary on the Neil Ave. side of the lake.

CAMPUS CONNECTION: HISTORIC MIRROR LAKE RENOVATIONS COMPLETED

96138_h.png

The project redesigned Mirror Lake and the surrounding green area, renovated and modernized Pomerene Hall, and refinished Browning Amphitheater. The budget for the upgrades amassed a total of almost $70 million.

The project also improved the natural landscape around the area, replacing the concrete that ran around the perimeter of the lake with gardens and shrubs. Two outlooks were also installed, allowing passerbyers to take a breath and enjoy the beauty of Ohio State’s campus. The natural setting of mirror lake with the grand, newly renovated Pomerene Hall makes this area south of the Oval one of the best spots on campus.

“I think the biggest change in my mind is it is going to look a lot more open than it did before." said Steve Volkmann, University Landscape Architect for the Mirror Lake project, in a July interview with Ohio State News. "We’ve pulled some of the perimeter planting back and we’ll be planting the lake edge."

Mirror Lake now offers a quick-drain function and a gradual decline to the water from the shore to serve as additional safety precautions for students. The tragic death of Austin Singletary in 2015 prompted these changes. Ohio State recently added a bench on Neil Avenue that honors Singletary.

Pomerene Hall, originally built in 1922, overlooks the lake. The aging building finally received the renovations it so desperately deserved and will now be the home for faculty of data analytics, linguistics, and history of art.

The updated building has kept its character after the renovations but contains some modern additions, including a floor-to-ceiling glass atrium on the east side of the building. The original hardware was kept as much as possible while upgrading to new workspaces and labs, giving Pomerene Hall the best possible combination of classic architecture and cutting-edge technology.

LOTS OF SMART KIDS. Ohio State is packing more students onto its campus than it ever has this semester, and they also happen to be the smartest group of students ever enrolled.

From Ohio State news:

The new first-year class on the Columbus campus comes in with a record-high average ACT score of 29.3. Of these students, 64 percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes and 95 percent were in the top 25 percent of their high school classes.

The class size stands at 7,851 new first-year students on the Columbus campus, up 10 percent over the class that entered in autumn 2017.

...

According to the report, total university enrollment increased 2.5 percent from 2017 to 2018. A record-high 68,100 students attend either the Columbus or a regional campus for the new academic year.

Enrollment at the Columbus campus also saw a record number of students this year: The total enrollment is 61,170 for 2018 – an increase of 2.2 percent from over last fall.

I've heard multiple people complain that they can't even find a seat in some classes, which makes sense because not only is the campus slammed, it's full of students who actually go to class.

Speaking of which, tip of the cap to those who go to class even though there isn't a seat for them. If I walked into classroom and there literally wasn't an available seat, I would just simply moonwalk my way back out the door.

Not to be too harsh, but that 29.3 ACT seems to have set a record each of the last three years. It would seem as though, if we want to propel it into the 30-31 range, we need to shrink the freshman classes back down to the 6K range. You get a branch campus, and you get a branch campus. Everyone under a 28 gets a branch campus! I think about 35K undergrads and 15K grad students is a good size for the university.

Probably more like 40-10 if you're looking for closer to just 50K on Columbus campus, as this year's 11,097 grad students is among the record-highs. (Also 3000 professional students if you count them.)

CAMPUS CONNECTION: ORTON HALL ADDS A NEW ATTRACTION TO HISTORIC MUSEUM

96691_h.jpg

Welcome to Campus Connection, where new campus hot-spots and underappreciated organizations get their time in the spotlight.

On a campus as big as Ohio State's, some buildings are bound to stand out. With its stone exterior and conic steeple, Orton Hall on the Oval is one of the most photogenic sights in Columbus.

Orton Hall was named for Ohio State’s first president and longtime geology professor Dr. Edward Orton Sr. The Hall finished construction in 1893, making it the second-oldest building on campus.

Orton Hall’s exterior features stones from all across Ohio, fitting for a building that houses Ohio State’s Geology department. The stones are arranged in stratigraphic order, where the youngest rocks are placed on top of the older ones.

Orton Hall added a bell tower in 1915. Every 15 minutes, students can hear 12 tolls ring out, typically to the tune of either Westminister Quarters or Carmen Ohio.

While Orton Hall is home to the Geology Department, it also hosts the Geology Library and the Orton Geological Museum, which includes over 10,000 of Dr. Orton’s fossils.

The Orton library contains over 200,000 geological maps and records are available for students. The library is the oldest on campus and covers all fields related to earth sciences.

The museum serves as both a public attraction and an academic resource. Both undergraduate and graduate students have access to the records for class and research purposes.

Visitors to Orton Hall will soon be greeted by Cryolophosaurus ellioti, a pre-Jurassic dinosaur whose remains were found by former Ohio State professor David Elliot. The skeleton, whose remains were unearthed in Antartica, is 22 feet long and over 175 million years old.

Awesome! I was one of those many donors to the "Bring a Dinosaur to Orton" fund in our last Campus Campaign. One of my (and my daughters') favorite places on campus.

Ok Buckeye dudes - your old pal BigWoof is strutting into Columbus next weekend to visit my wife's friends and their new baby.
We're going to be watching the Penn State game at their house and staying in a Marriott downtown.

What I'm looking for is a damn good breakfast spot downtown. Have been to TipTop before and that was very, very good. The problem is they don't open till 11:00am and I want to be on the road back to Cincy by then (this is Sunday, of course).

Whatcha got for me?
