Controversy Swirls as Ohio State Introduces "Academics"
4/24/2003 - William Grim
Columbus, Ohio - The campus of perennial Big Ten sports power Ohio State University has been rocked by the news that in the 2003-2004 sports season the Ohio Legislature has mandated the introduction of a new concept in higher education called "academics."
"We're not sure what "academics' actually entails," said OSU president Karen Holbrook, "But it seems to have something to do with hiring a lot of people to teach things like language, math and science to the young people who live in the university's dormitories. From the sound of it, I'm afraid that these 'academics' are sure to adversely affect the quality of the 'university experience' that Ohio State currently offers. I do wish that the State Legislature had consulted with us before changing the university's traditional curriculum of binge drinking, rioting and looting on High Street, and attending athletic events before binge drinking and looting and rioting on High Street."
The experiment with "academics" at Ohio State is being closely watched by officials at other universities. "If this here 'academics' thang is forced down Ohio State's throat it could set a dangerous pressydent," said Billy Bob Dupree, President of The University of Kansas at Bugtussle. "It'd be a dang shame if'n we wuz to let book-larnin' git in the way of puking yer guts out at fraternity parties and athletic endorsement contracts, you know, the thangs that edukayshun is sposed to be all 'bout."
