Ohio State invades Texas for recruiting camp

There was a Buckeye presence at a satellite camp in the Houston area.
It has been a bit of a whirlwind in the world of Ohio State football recruiting. Landing top prospects to the 2018 class and sending out offers to future 2019 stars, Urban Meyer and his staff haven’t missed a beat. With camp season here, the staff certainly doesn’t have plans on stopping their momentum. In fact, with the incredible run they are currently having in their 2018 class, look for Ohio State to continue cementing what looks to be the nation’s top overall class when all's said and done come February 2018. It’s a great time to be an Ohio State Buckeye.
Texas is the move
There’s roughly five states Urban Meyer has had his way in when it comes to recruiting at a greater rate in terms of quantity. Besides the obvious, Ohio, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey, Texas is a state that Meyer and his staff have recruited at record pace. Landing three of the top players in 2017, the Buckeyes have a serious presence in the Lone Star State. However, former Ohio State quarterback coach Tom Herman is now in his first season as the Texas headmaster and plans on keeping his prized in-state studs home. A feat Meyer is no stranger to, plucking the best from the South has been something that hasn’t been relatively hard for him. Will Herman change this pace? We may find out soon enough.
Yesterday, Ohio State and bossman Meyer made their presence known when they attended a Houston area satellite camp where many of the top prospects were able to make a name for themselves. The one who caught the most attention: five-star cornerback Anthony Cook (Houston / Lamar). A 6-foot, 170-pound ball-hawk, Cook is ranked as the second best corner in the country and the top player in the entire state of Texas for the 2018 class. Easily the top talent at the Houston satellite, Meyer wanted to keep Cook close just to make sure he still knows he’s their top defensive back priority for this current cycle.

With nearly 40 scholarship offers, the thinking is that Cook is actually down to a final two schools and deciding between Ohio State and Texas. Sure to be the first real battle between Tom Herman and his former boss, the current crystal ball predictions have Ohio State running away with the odds to land Cook. A final decision is thought to come this January at the U.S. Army All-American game, but with constant reports confirming that Cook is his own type of person and tends to shy away from the media attention, anything is possible. The good news: Ohio State is sitting in great position (and rightfully so) as they continue to send their defensive backs to the NFL every passing season.
More of the same in Texas?
As previously mentioned, Thursday was dedicated to the Buckeye staff checking out the top talent around Houston. Besides the obvious Anthony Cook sweepstakes, a 2019 receiver made it a point to be seen by the Buckeyes. Jalen Curry (Stafford, TX /Stafford) is thought to be one of the top receivers in the 2019 class, and he was certainly worth watching as he competed at the satellite camp.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound deep threat currently has nearly 25 offers and it’s easy to see why. With the size college coaches covet, Curry is sure to be a serious target the next two years on and off the field. With offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia and more, Ohio State could become a serious player in this recruitment if they were to offer. Certainly seems as if Curry would consider the Buckeyes too if this were to be the case.
Camp season has begun
Later today, Ohio State will host their one-day position football camp which officially gets their camp season underway. With several Ohio targets always in attendance, one-day camps are always a great way for “bubble” type prospects to get in front of the staff and earn themselves the highly coveted Buckeye offer.
In attendance for today’s camp will include a current 2018 offensive lineman commit, Max Wray. A four-star pledge, today will mark the first visit back to Columbus for Wray since his spring game visit this past April. The only pledge said to be in attendance, Wray will compete, but may even be able to recruit himself a bit as the lone 2018 Buckeye commit.
Also in attendance today will include three-star running back Master Teague, three-star defensive end Jayson Oweh, three-star corner Marcus Hooker and more. It’s unlikely a commit will come today, but it’s certainly possible for the staff to like what they see and dish out their latest offers to any in attendance.
