In their first game at Ohio Stadium this year, the Buckeyes post a dominant win over UMBC.

Bouncing back from a tough loss on the road against UMass last week that dropped them from national rankings, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team reigned victorious over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers in their first game in the Horseshoe this season.

For the fourth time this season, Ohio State allowed the first goal of the game, with UMBC scoring just 1:20 into play. Sophomore attackman Colin Chell responded less than two minutes later, however, tying the game at one-all with his fourth goal of the season. The teams traded goals through the second quarter, with Chell adding on two more goals for the Buckeyes, but Ohio State managed the final three goals of the half to go up 6-3 at the break.

The Buckeyes continued their dominance through the third quarter, extending their lead all the way to six, bringing the score to 9-3 to conclude the third quarter. In all, Ohio State held UMBC scoreless for nearly 27 minutes in the middle of the game. The Buckeyes held onto their lead throughout the fourth quarter, and were never up by less than five goals at a given time.

Chell led the Buckeyes in scoring with three goals and one assist on the day for four total points, while junior attackman Austin Shanks added two goals and two assists to his total. Overall, nine players scored for Ohio State. Junior midfielder Jake Withers continued his dominance in the midfield, going 14-8 on faceoffs to bring his season total to 54-28. Redshirt junior goalie Tom Carey had six saves against UMBC. Overall shots on goal were 20-12 in favor of Ohio State.

With the win, Ohio State moves to 3-1 on the season. The Buckeyes are scheduled to host Bellarmine, Detroit and Marquette at Ohio Stadium next week in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic.
