Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Sad but true (the guy reviews some college hockey venues)....

Commentary: The highlights and rankings from a trip to some of the Midwest’s arenas

The Comatose Award
To Ohio State, which plays its games in the antiseptic and charmless Value City Arena. It’s a concrete jungle. I’ve caught a Buckeyes men’s basketball game here when this place is nearly full and it still doesn’t impress, so imagine what it’s like for hockey. Not good, especially when the place is less than 50 percent full — in the lower bowl. The Buckeyes draw so poorly for hockey they just close the upper bowl right off.

Granted, I caught a Tuesday night nonconference game in late October against Bowling Green, but the Buckeyes certainly reap no home-ice advantage playing here.

Took two from the guys from Slappy Valley over the weekend which is always a good thing. They have been playing fairly well over the past couple weeks playing both Wisconsin and Minnesota very tough and taking one from the Gophers.

Well, it's not like the hockey coaches will dare bring up the subject. Oz did, and Gene Smith fired him on the spot. A dozen years ago, I was a season ticket holder. This year, I don't even follow the program. And people wonder why nobody goes to the games! It's too frustrating knowing that Gene Smith has gone from not caring about it to seemingly actively trying to keep it down. When he is finally gone, I might reignite some interest.

Ohio State scored two 6x4 power play goals in the final 1:36 of the third period (including the game tying goal with two seconds left) to come back and tie Michigan State, 2-2. The Buckeyes then won the shootout for the extra point in the standings.

I turned the game on when there were about 5 minutes to go and saw that MSU was up 2-0. Almost turned the game off but glad I did not. MSU taking two very bad penalties in the last couple minutes of the game. Those announcers certainly sucked. They must have been old Spartans.

Another SO win and Penn State gets their first Big Ten win. A 4 goal shutout of TSUN. Great hockey weekend.

For the second night in a row, the Buckeyes rallied to tie the game in the third and then downed the Spartans in a shootout for the extra point in the B1G standings, heading home with four points on the weekend.

Matt Johnson scored both goals for the Buckeyes - both assisted by Alex Lippincott - and Christian Frey had 30 saves through overtime. Nick Schilkey scored for the Buckeyes in the shootout, and Frey stopped all three shots he faced. Go Bucks!

There was a little confusion over the last goal.

They went to the video review as both teams shook hands and determined it was a goal as they were leaving the ice. Technically, the teams should have been forced to have a face-off. I assume OSU just said no, so the refs let it slide.

It's right to count the goal for any number of statistical reasons.

Buckeyes 2 Badgers 1 Nice win for the hockey program. These guys are playing out of their minds. It would be nice if they had a nice hockey facility fan wise to play in.

I think the Schott could be a great hockey venue if about 10,000 more fans showed up for each game. Sadly I doubt that significantly more fans would show up if they did build a hockey only facility.

Ohio State average attendance for hockey:

2010-2011----3,829
2011-2012----5,178
2012-2013----4,004
2013-2014----4,403

While I will agree that not many more fans would show up, I guess my point was if they had built a 5000 seat hockey arena one they built the Schott the hockey program would probably be much better off. There was some discussion last week about this on another board and I guess the person that could be blamed for this is our former president E Gordon Gee. In reading a couple old articles from the Dispatch, there was a lot of bickering between the Ohio State University and the city of Columbus regarding a hockey facility and while I do not remember all of the details there were some promises that were made that were not kept. A small nice hockey arena is now probably out of the question for Ohio State unfortunately.

I'm not sure it is that unfortunate, see logic statement #7 below.

1. I don't see the state giving Ohio State anything for a new hockey facility since they contributed a significant amount of taxpayer money to build the Schott (which most of our elected officials and their constituents will say is a fine facility for college hockey).

2. If Ohio State were to build a new hockey facility the athletic department would have to find a way to fund it.

3. Needless to say, the Ohio State athletic department doesn't have an extra $50M lying around.

4. The athletic department is already paying off a large debt for the Schott and Ohio Stadium remolding, etc.

5. There isn't much hope for the hockey team to generate more revenue. I wouldn't expect any increase in hockey attendance. If you raised the hockey ticket prices even fewer would come to the games.

6. I doubt that they could get wealthy donors to fully fund a new hockey facility and selling naming rights to the facility won't raise that much either.

7. The only "sure fire" way for the athletic department to come up with more revenue is to raise football ticket prices (yet again), and I DON"T WANT THAT.

I've always thought that Ohio State could grow into a 7500 or 8000 seat arena. The 4k to 5k that we now average would create a much better atmosphere there than in the cavernous Schott. It would help recruiting, and if the program ever really became a serious ncaa contender, the bandwagon support from students would fill that 7500 arena. The French Field House location would be perfect.

It's a long term investment if done correctly by the AD, it could turn the hockey program into at least a small money maker, whereas it currently loses more money than all the other Big Ten programs combined.
