Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

I expect big changes in the off-season. I cannot imagine that Tucker is very happy and that is putting it mildly… Just sayin

TCU's single players:

1. Gray, Alastair: Great Britain
2. Fomba, Luc: France
3. Fearnley, Jake: Great Britain
4. Jirousek, Tomas: Czech Republic
5. Paroulek, Tadeas: Czech Republic
6. Kruger, Bertus: South Africa

Just sayin': All 6 of TCU's single players were very good and from another country. Maybe Ohio State tennis (i.e. Ty Tucker) should look into recruiting more of the top international players.

I would really almost hate it if Ohio State had to go all foreign for their tennis teams. That takes away good scholarship money from United States kids. I guess you might have a point regarding foreign players because in recent years there have not been any United States born players that have won any of the 4 majors so they must be getting pretty good teaching overseas. Probably being taught by guys from the United States.

Re. Us spectators Raising options or questions for coaches about how to build a championship team via recruiting, I trust the coaches, ...
they know the world junior tour and have developed connections for talent.
Tucker has the international reputation as a developer of talent,
It’s widely known that former Buckeye players Testify that reached their peak athletic performance levels while in the conditioning and training program at OSU.
The debate about whether to recruit more players internationally is not new.
Bucks have had success overseas with Rola, Monecke, and Torpegaard.
Checking the current OSU roster Siebert, Boulais and Trotter represent the international community.

NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Bracket: https://www.ncaa.com/_flysystem/public-s3/images/2021/05/22/21 M Singles 052221.pdf

McNally takes the first set 6-2 from top-seeded Liam Draxl!
Draxl bounces back to win the second set 6-1.
They are on serve in the third with McNally up 2-1
McNally and Draxl still on serve at 4-4 in the third.
5-5 in the third. McNally to serve
McNally holds for 6-5
Draxl holds for 6-6.
McNally up 4-1 in the breaker
Back tied at 4-4
Tough loss for McNally. Great fight against the top seed but he falls 7-4 in a third-set breaker.

McNally is a senior this year, (i.e. his 4th year); however, the NCAA gives players an extra year of eligibility due to their COVID-19 ruling.

Anybody know if he plans on coming back next year or not?

https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/tucker-welcomes-vocel-van-emburgh-and-yakubov-for-2021-22-season/
Ohio State director of tennis Ty Tucker has welcomed Matej Vocel, Jake Van Emburgh and Reece Yakubov onto an already talented roster for the 2021-22 season.

Vocel played the last three seasons at Oklahoma State where he was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree in both singles and doubles. He was a first team singles honoree in 2019 and a unanimous selection in 2021. Also in 2019, he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, becoming just the seventh Cowboy in program history to earn the award. He took his game a step further in 2020 and was named an ITA All-American. He reached as high as No. 19 in the ITA singles rankings and was ranked No. 1 at one point in doubles during his Cowboy career.

The Prague, Czech Republic native was the No. 3 ranked junior player in the Czech Republic prior to heading to Oklahoma State and has also been ranked as the No. 20 male player in the country. His career-high ATP rankings are 641 in singles and 358 in doubles. Matej is the son of Stanislava and Jan Vocel.

Van Emburgh was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2018 as he played the last four seasons at Oklahoma. He was also named the ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year that season after playing in every match for the Sooners and recording a 25-6 singles record. He earned All-Big 12 honors in both singles and doubles during his freshman campaign. As a sophomore, he went 17-9 and was named the ITA Central Region Player to Watch. During his Sooner career, he rose to as high as No. 47 in the ITA singles rankings and No. 13 in the doubles rankings.

A two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Van Emburgh has tallied over 100 combined collegiate victories. He earned an ATP ranking of 1415 in 2020. Prior to his time in Norman, Van Emburgh was ranked as a top eight junior player in America. That came as no surprise as his father Greg is a former ATP touring pro who was ranked as high as No. 30 in the world. He was also a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 1990 and winner of seven ATP titles. Jake’s mother is Tracey Van Emburgh and his brother is Jenson, who is a Para Table Tennis player and ranked in the Top-10 in the world. Jenson will compete in Tokyo later this month.

Yakubov is a five-star recruit from St. Charles Prep in Columbus. He was ranked in the Top 40 nationally of the 2021 class and No. 5 in the Midwest. He is a four-time state qualifier and finished runner-up at the DI state tournament in 2018. In addition to being a two-time first team All-Ohio honoree and four-time All-League honoree on the tennis court, he also earned All-League honors four times as a member of the golf team. He helped St. Charles qualify for the state championship in 2019.

Yakubov is the son of Steven and Tracey Yakubov. He has two brothers, Evan and Connor, who both play collegiate golf. Evan is on the team at Indiana and Connor played at Emory University.
Tucker announces the raid of Oklahoma, reload and keep firing strategy for another championship run.
Some noteworthy additions from aOSU and OU will compete for TOSU in 2021-22.
Not sure if Vocel has 2 years left or if both he and JVE have only one year of eligibility.
Yakubov will be a freshmen, would anticipate tough to crack a loaded lineup, possibly he is a candidate for a red shirt year.

Good call on the talent script,
J j Mercer who was buried on the depth chart entered the transfer portal and is headed to u Kentucky, both McNally and Seelig have graduated and exhausted their eligibility. But Tim Siebert is still listed on the roster.

Will be fun to see how the lineup shakes out since Vocel (Utr 13.60) played #1 at aOSU and JVE (utr 13.21) was #1 singles at Oklahoma.
Osu Junior Cannon Kingsley (13.64) will also be in the battle for #1 court,
I really expect to see strong runs for the 3 lines by 5 returning veterans,
seniors Siebert and James trotter, juniors Robert cash and Justin Boulais, and last years B1G freshman of the year JJ Tracy.
Fun times ahead.

Jake Van Emburgh
Senior (2020-21)
Finished the year at 8-14 overall in singles and 10-13 in doubles … (Spring) 8-11 in dual matches between courts one and three … Ranked as high as No. 86 in the ITA singles rankings (May 5) … Clinched the Sooners’ victory over in-state rival Tulsa as he downed No. 67 Kody Pearson 6-2, 6-3 on court one … Earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors for his performance against Tulsa … Added another ranked win with a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-1 defeat of No. 120 Eliot Spizziri of Texas (March 7) … Clinched OU’s revenge win over Texas Tech (April 1) as he defeated Parker Wynn 6-3, 5-6, 7-6 (5) at the top spot … 9-11 in dual match doubles … Played primarily with Matt Rodriguez and the duo went 5-5 … Clinched OU’s doubles point against Baylor with a 6-3 win over Charlie Broom and Matias Soto on court three … (Fall) 0-3 in singles and 1-2 in doubles during the fall … Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree.

Matej Vocel
Go to https://okstate.com/documents/2021/7/6//20_21_cowboy_tennis_stats.pdf?id=26358 and see page 12.

Interesting #1 singles matches (OU played OkieSU twice last year):

1. #49 Matej Vocel (OkieSU) def. Jake Van Emburgh (OU) 6-3, 6-3

1. #53 Matej Vocel (OkieSU) def. #123 Jake Van Emburgh (OU) 0-6, 7-1 (7-4), 6-4

Just sayin': It appears Vocel is the better of the 2; but still (overall) had a losing record. I'm thinking that Cannon Kingsley is better than both of them and should be the #1 singles. Vocel looks more like a #2 or #3 guy and Emburgh may be #4 or #5. Which is great, they are quality players that provide depth at the lower spots and should have have winning records against the better schools.

Ohio State should have more than 6 solid players, the key (as it always is) to beating the better schools is putting together 3 solid doubles teams and winning that point.

1. Kingsley
2. Vocel
3. Trotter
4. Emburgh
5. Tracy
6. Boulais or Cash or Siebert
