Ohio State vs #14 Wisconsin (official game thread)

Unfortunately this is gonna be a problem with any team that is loaded with one and done players that may give them a good run one year but leave the cubbard bare for the next. I am obviously not a fan of this philosophy and wish that our coaches would not recruit players with that mentality. I rate college football and basketball way ahead of pro-anything and do not wish to see college sports turn into only a developmental league for the pros. Remember we are talking about student athletes, not semi-pro and by recruiting guys who obviously have no intent to get a degree we are robbing a true student athlete from a scholarship. I would rather see the scholie given to a student and watch them develop over a 3-4 year period into a TEAM then to see it wasted on a one and done.

The above quote came from a Dispatch article written by Bob Baptist in posted by Grad on page 3 of this thread.

Those quotes from those players are just unbelievable. These guys have been together since September and they are still working on "camaraderie" and "just sticking together". If this is indeed true and since these are direct quotes attributed to the players, there is something seriously wrong with this team. We are close to three months in playing games and these guys still do not know how to play together. I could attribute this to lack of senior leadership but I'm sorry this comes from the very top. Matta should have recognized this early in the season and done something about it. The team can play hard but if they are not playing as a team what good is it doing. I just find these quotes unbelievable coming from players this late in the season.

This is a point when I really hate to say told ya so...:(

Those comments are not suprising at this point considering what has been said to the media by Jamar Butler......they have struggled with positive leadership all year........looking at the bright side for this team, they have learned some very vauluable lessons on what it takes to win at the D-1 level.

That is a valid point, but as much as its Matta's team, it is also the player's team and they must stick together.
I guess what I don't understand is why he is this happening so late in the season. Plus, these were quotes from the players and not the writer of the story. Very disappointing and this type of thing can hurt down the road.

When a team is struggling and without a dominant voice of leadership.....maybe fingers get pointed and things are said......it is disappointing but not suprising when you have struggled to win and lost some very close games. They need to stick together and we need to stick by our team.

But this type of thing starts at the very top.

Thus by reading between the lines, Matta doesn't like what is going on...Thus maybe part of the reasoning behind the benching of Jamar to start the game...

I am still behind the team, still think if they can manage to get to 21 wins they make the tourney...

It just sucks continuing to watch them fail when they are so close...

I am behind his team 100% but that type of quote from a player really bothers me. It makes me wonder what is going on.

Your statement is right on. I can't remember all the scores but I think we really have only been beaten by UNC and Texas A&M. Sure we got beat by Iowa and Michigan but I still think we are a better team than either of them. They just when lights out against us. We were close at Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, and even yesterday. I forgot about Butler being us but then again they shot lights out. I do not think this team ranks #66 in the Country. We have held out our own and for a few ill-fated bounces we probably would have 3-4 more wins already. Saying that, the next 4 games are going to be very tough.

Great point. The coach sets the tone and expectations...but sometimes teams (or certain players) just don't gel. It's just a beautiful thing that either happens or doesn't sometimes...

Also, leadership doesn't necessarily mean an upperclassman. More common of course for a senior to take a team on his shoulders...but at this point in the season, all of these guys should be looking at themselves and wondering what they can do to help this team get over the hump.

Well, we haven't heard that sentiment before.

I don't have time to read anymore of this thread since a page or two after the game ended. I am amazed to see posts about it being wrong to recruit "one and done" players. I don't remember anyone bitching about that last year.

I am surprised by the carping about defense. This team plays excellent defense and are ranked #13 on it by Pomeroy, based on their performance. People get open for wide-open 3's sometimes when you're doing something else. Not every shooter is ever covered. No defense cannnot be improved. But, all in all, they are pretty good.

The problem is offense. I don't know why they were launching 3's and missing everything last night.

I wonder if they aren't are a bit like my favorite golfer, Ernie Els. Once he gets it in his head that something is wrong with his swing or whatever, his game changes dramatically. One bad shot and his game deteriorates markedly.

I have noticed that this team appears to shoot in streaks, hot then cold.

When they miss a few shots, they appear to believe that they are now 'cold' and they start making less than optimal shot choices and throwing bricks. Maybe I am wrong, as I listen usually and have only seen a few games.

What I do know is that anyone who has played basketball knows that performance like that is about 'being in the zone'. It affects everyone but it affects those most who fail to live up to their expectations and the expectations of those they'd like to impress. It's about head and not heart.

They can still get into the NCAA, but if they fail, I'll still be listening to the games in the NIT.

Go Buckeyes!

Well, we did let one slip by, but this is the time to gain motivation.

We need to kill a wounded IU, a scary good Purdue team, and an MSU team.

MSU and IU shouldn't be that difficult, as IU is in shock, and MSU never was THAT good.

Purdue however, we can afford to lose to.

Then take care of business against the Gophers, and we still have a shot at the big dance.

I wouldn't assume that if I were you...they might just go into "us against the world mode"...we just don't know. But with their inside-out combo...they're anything but an easy win.

Did you catch the NU/IU game? They won that game.. Hardly...

We're better than NU, have a better crowd, and have people that can make shots.

I do like our chances vs them.

It won't be a gimme, obviously, but certainly a winnable game.
