Ohio State vs. #15 Wisconsin, Jan 10, 8:30 PM ET, BTN

I don't expect prime-Matta results consistently, that was a "moment in time" thing and the landscape of CBB has changed since those amazing days. But we should be able to attract the talent and coach them up enough to make a tourney run once every couple of years, if not more. We have the resources to be better than this.

There are certain "warm weather" sports that being a national contender in is simply never going to happen in this day and age such as baseball, golf and track. Basketball isn't on that list. We've built programs across the AD that compete for national titles on a regular basis (men's and women's hockey, lacrosse, men's volleyball, wrestling, tennis, women's rowing and fencing come to mind). We're not consistently in the top 3 of the Director's Cup solely based on football.

There's no reason that basketball can't do the same. I don't expect to be a blueblood contending all the time and rebuilding years are inevitable, but it's inexcusable to not get out of the opening weekend for how many years now?

I'll add that it is inexcusable with the guys we have on this team. There is serious talent and a blend of experience that should make this a top 1/3 of the B1G/Sweet 16 run type of team. If we don't get there, CH needs canned immediately. The scenario I mentioned is completely attainable...everyone says "well we're not a basketball school" and that is true. But to have the results we've seen under CH falls short of that whole argument and you referenced the statistics to prove it.
The sad truth is Holtmann gets skilled players, he just doesn't coach them to be a cohesive team on either end of the court on a consistent basis. He's just in over his head.

This is where I’m at. He had a strong start to his tenure but has demonstrated he’s a mediocre coach. He’s done a solid job recruiting and keeping the program clean but development and results are underwhelming. I was ready for a change after last season and have low expectations after the PSU game collapse. I would be shocked to see this team buck the trend. Hope I’m wrong as I like this team. Turnovers, free throw shooting and execution in the closing minutes of games is bad. The team doesn’t have an ability to close out games. New AD likely means new coach next season.

New AD doesn't start until July. That likely gives Holtmann one more season to impress his new boss.

The top candidates will have already been hired and teams start training in September.
