Ohio State vs. Iowa, Tuesday, February 26, 7:00 PM, BTN

This is basically a must-win for OSU if they want to make the tournament. The most winnable game left that can help their chances significantly.
while iowa may be the most winnable game among the remaining at-large opponents, it's definitely not a must-win. i don't think the wisconsin game is all that dissimilar from the standpoint of difficulty. fortunately for us, the badgers don't force many turnovers, don't hit the offensive boards all that hard, and don't shoot well from the free throw line. while wisconsin is quite strong in defensive efficiency, they don't prove their efficiency with the kind of athleticism that has given us fits. and if the game is close toward the end, happ goes to the bench.

as it stands right now, no game is a must-win. just win two remaining regular season games. any two will probably do, though we'd certainly rather beat wisconsin than iowa. the hawkeyes will drop to a q2 win if we beat them and probably stay there since the only home (and favored) game they have remaining is rutgers.

I feel Wisconsin is probably going to beat OSU, though. UW is more comparable to UM than Iowa in overall quality. Iowa is more of a toss-up game. Got to take advantage of a home opportunity vs the one decent team in the league that has shown some signs of weakness.

that doesn't make tomorrow's game a must-win, though.
I did say basically a must-win. It is the most likely W that can help keep their head above water in terms of tournament selection.. Other quality Ws are possible, but less likely. Lose this game and there is a plausible chance of losing five straight and sitting at 17-14 heading into the BTT, with 18-13 being possibly the most likely record with an L. I don't feel very confident about their chances with either of those records.

then you must think iowa and wisconsin pose drastically different challenges to us. all the metrics (kenpom, bart torvik, warren nolan, realtimerpi, etc.) see both games as toss-ups with osu eking out victories.

what makes me more concerned about iowa than wisconsin, though, is how we lost to iowa the first time around. we lost despite shooting 40% (10/25) behind the arc, with iowa shooting 25% (4/16). if both teams regress toward their in-conference mean (osu at 33.6% and iowa at 37.4%), we're in for a world of hurt with everything else being equal. since the osu-iowa game, iowa has shot 3-pointers better than their conference average in 7 of 10 games (with all 4 road games being better than the average). osu, on the other hand, has shot worse than their conference behind-the-arc average in 7 of 11 games. we've been 34% at home, with the last 2 home games being an abysmal 18.2% (6/33). from deep, trends are not our friend.

moreover, iowa ate us up inside. kaleb scored a whopping 2 points (with 5 turnovers) while garza and cook feasted with 31 combined points. good news is that kaleb can't play any worse than that. bad news? iowa still has garza and cook... and kaleb might be finally wearing thin.

now does all of that mean i'm much more confident that we can beat wisconsin and that i don't think we can win tomorrow? heck no. truth be told, i expect us to lose both. however, beating iowa while losing to wisconsin seems just as likely as to me as losing to iowa and beating wisconsin.

now watch us beat iowa by 15 before being railroaded by wisconsin...

Ohio State men’s basketball | Chris Holtmann: C.J. Jackson’s status ‘up in the air’ for Iowa game

Two days removed from a loss at Maryland and one day before hosting Iowa, Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann hosted his weekly radio show.

In case you couldn’t listen, here are the highlights.

*At interviews before practice Monday, Holtmann told reporters that senior C.J. Jackson practiced Sunday and seemed likely to play Tuesday night against Iowa. On his radio show after practice, he sounded less certain.

“I told the media today it was going to depend on practice,” Holtmann said Monday evening. “I would say right now it’s up in the air. He was not able to do as much as I was hoping he’d be able to do, but we’ll see. I don’t know what else to say beyond that. It’s kind of hour-by-hour right now. He can’t hurt himself by playing. That’s the big thing you’re trying to make sure. It’s just in a lot of ways a pain tolerance thing for him.”

continued...

My god if there is no chance of him making it worse then he needs to play. He's a senior and this team ain't winning with Woods. If he wants to make the tournament play through the pain and give it a shot
i'm of two minds in regards to woods playing while jackson sits. on one hand, jackson is the proven scorer/shooter. i'm more confident in his ability to put the ball in the bucket than i am confident in woods. on the other hand, woods tends to understand his limitations a little better when pushing tempo. jackson pushes way too often when he should instead pull the ball back out or pass before the pressure suffocates him. i like it when jackson tries to don the superman cape with set shots. he kills us, though, when he tries to don the superman cape by dribbling into multiple defenders.

anyway, i wouldn't be surprised if ho1tmann made the comment about pain being the sole issue as a not-so-veiled way of telling jackson to nut up and be a damn leader.

I was going to stay on the light side but basically agree with this. If there’s damage obviously he can’t go, but if you’re staring down a handful of games left in your college (and possibly entire) basketball career, you go.

That said, I fully expect CJ to play and give the Bucks everything.
