NATION'S TOP WRESTLING RECRUIT AND CADET WORLD CHAMPION DANIEL GREGORY KERKVLIET COMMITS OHIO STATE

Ohio State just landed the top wrester in the country.

Daniel Kerkvliet, the No. 1 wrestler on FloWrestling's 2019 big board, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes via Instagram two days after his visit to Ohio State.

"When I took my visit there it felt like the perfect fit," he said in the post announcing his commitment to Tom Ryan's program.

A senior from Simley, Minnesota, Kerkvliet originally committed to wrestle at home-state Minnesota back in 2016, and at one point was slated to wrestle for Oklahoma State. He reopened his commitment to the Cowboys in July, and the Buckeyes put on a full-court press to earn the blue-chipper's pledge.

"I am looking for the best environment where I can make a long-term commitment, much longer than just the five years I will be wrestling in college," Kerkvliet told FloWrestling in July. That last comment was foreshadowing his eventual decision, as the heavyweight prospect will have the opportunity to train alongside Kyle Snyder, who continues to train at the Ohio Regional Training Center in preparation for defending his World and Olympic titles.

Kerkvliet won the Cadet World Championship in freestyle last year, and was a finalist again this summer. He was slated to wrestle for the 97 kg title at the Junior World Championships later this month, but USA Wrestling announced Monday that a recent injury would keep him from competing at the tournament.

The Buckeyes seem to have their 285-pound roster set for the foreseeable future, with former top-heavyweight prospect Chase Singletary set to take over for Snyder this fall, and the top recruit in the country now added to the mix. Kerkvliet was slated to wrestle at 220-pounds for his senior season, so it's possible that he – like Snyder before him – sees time at 197 pounds following Kollin Moore.

Absolutely, absolutely HUGE! One of the biggest wrestling commitments we have had for the program. What makes it extra important is that he is headed to Columbus and not Happy Valley...as mentioned above, there was some talk that we were trending away, so very happy that was not true. I am thinking that Kerkvliet may start off at 197 and then move up after Singletary graduates as the article mentions above. Either way, just thrilled to have him in the S&G. Welcome aboard Mr. Kerkvliet!

He might wrestle 220 this year and ultimately project as a light heavyweight at the next level, but I think he's more than capable of wrestling at 197 and taking over for Moore until Singletary graduates. There is simply no replacing Kyle Snyder...ever. But a combo of Kerkvliet/Singletary is the absolute best we could have done to replicate the producion we got from the top of the lineup in Moore/Snyder. Ryan has just done an incredible job on the recruiting trail and has capitalized immensely following the recent success. I don't know what we're paying him, but give the man a raise.

WRESTLING: BUCKEYES OPEN PRACTICE AS PRESEASON NO. 2

97786_h.jpg

In what has become a familiar story, Ohio State will once again open its wrestling season as the challenger to Penn State's long-running dynasty. The Buckeyes are the unanimous preseason No. 2 team in the country according to rankings from FloWrestling, TrackWrestling, WIN Magazine and InterMat.

Overall, seven returning starters from last season's NCAA Runner-up squad find themselves in the preseason rankings from all four media outlets.

It'd be nice to knock the pedsters off their throne. What are our chances?

Next to none this year in my eyes, last year was the shot to do it if we were going to. We will be very good and should be the odds on favorite to take runner up. But PSU has wayyy too much firepower at the top of their lineup. Nolf will win it at 157 with bonus in nearly every match, Joseph should win it at 165, Hall wins it or takes runner up at 174, Rasheed is a high AA most likely at 184, Nickal will likely win it at 197 absent a serious resurgent Kollin Moore at that weight (again, his NCAA performance will likely be huge), and Nevills is at least top 3 and likely in the finals with a shot to win it. You could say the bottom of the PSU lineup is green for sure, but they have top freshmen recruits coming in at 125 (Teske/Teasdale), 133 (Bravo-Young) and 149 (Verkleen/Berge), then a returning AA in Lee at 141.

Even if our freshmen perform lights out and our veterans wrestle to the best of their ability, I just don't see enough firepower unless there is an injury or two to PSU...definitely not wishing that, but that is the reality.

But on a more positive note, there will some really competitive wrestle-offs tomorrow night and it is being live streamed on Flo (guessing you need premium). The wrestle-offs and my picks at each weight are below in bold:

125: Heinselman vs. Mead (I have Malik winning this one by 4-5 points, but it sounds like they will likely sit him at the beginning of the year and let Mead wrestle, while they see how Malik does at the opens...this approach has worked well in the past, but hopefully Malik progresses enough to be AA material)
133: Pletcher vs. Felix (Felix has good long-term potential here, but easy call on this one)
141: None (apparently nobody is wrestling McKenna off at all here even with talented freshmen in Quinn Kinner and JD Stickley coming in)
149: Jordan vs. Hayes (easily the biggest wrestle-off of the night...Hayes is a great wrestler, but I have Jordan with a solid, but close win...I like Jordan to contend for the title at 149 after dropping down with the field that is at 149 this year)
157: Cleary vs. Rehfeldt (really wrestling for the backup to whomever wins between Jordan and Hayes, but Cleary wins this one easy)
165: Romero vs. Schierl (I like Romero to win, but Schierl is no slouch...I actually would love to see this one, can't wait to see Romero go this year...think he is a real darkhorse at 165)
174: Campbell vs. Ethan Smith (while I have Campbell, Smith is a stud and I expect this one to be a serious fight, likely the best match other than 149)
184: Martin vs. Hoffman (Martin should take this one pretty easily, but really would love to see how the true frosh Hoffman does...was #1 at his weight coming out of HS)
197: Moore vs. Kevin Snyder (easy win for Moore)
HWT: Singletary vs. Traub (easy win for Singletary)

Pretty happy with the results of the wrestle offs. I think Micah at 149 and Hayes at 157 is the best for the team overall...I honestly like Mic to win at 149, I think he beats Kolodzik and Ashnault will certainly be tough...but I like Mic to at least get to finals, whereas I'm not sure Hayes gets there. Hayes at 157 will certainly dilute his results, but I think Hayes lands about where Mic would have at 157. Nolf and Hidlay are clear finalists imo, nobody is knocking them off. Then you have Pantaleo, who Mic couldn't beat to save his life last year. Mic was able to beat Shields from ASU once and Hayes can wrestle with him, but Shields is the #4 and combined with the aforementioned guys makes an extremely tough top 4. Then you have Berger who is also a stud at #5, but I like Hayes to land somewhere between 4-8 if he wrestles well, which I think is about where Mic would end up as well. And I think Mic was a tad undersized at 157 and Hayes has a better frame to hold the weight...plus I think Hayes style could throw some people off at 157 since he is not the typical bulldog/hammer type at that weight. As Coach Ryan said, win-win at that weight in my eyes.

Campbell winning the weight was encouraging in some respects...glad to see he won the weight, as I think he can win a bunch of matches for us at 174. It is a really deep weight, but I think he has a shot to AA. He needs to get more aggressive from his feet and on bottom (as the article correctly points out), but he can pull out some close matches against good opponents now that he is healthy and not cutting so much weight, which I think really hampered him in the past...it was painfully obvious. But you had Ethan Smith, who I am really high on in the future, give him two really close matches. Looks good for the future at that weight and gives us great depth if anything happens with Campbell.

Then apparently Heinselman only beat Mead 4-3...no offense to Mead but I was hoping for a major there...could be that we just take it on the chin at that weight at NCAA's, but definitely not jumping to conclusions yet...plenty of open-season performances to evaluate before Ryan makes that decision. While it is nice to win early tournaments/duals, you have to look to February and March, which Ryan is amazing at. At 165, sounds like Romero struggled against Schierl...Schierl is pretty solid, but wanted to see Romero dominate...he is a big wildcard heading into the season, we need him to win some matches at NCAA's. At heavyweight, color me very concerned that Singletary lost his match to Traub...not good at all. I figured that match was a matter of how many points Singletary would win by, not if he would win. We have to get points at that weight and hopefully it was just an off night for Singletary...worried he won't make the adjustment up to HWT that we were anticipating.

In any event, can't wait for the wrestling season to start!

Carson Kharchla is going to be a Buckeye.

Ohio State's recruiting momentum hasn't slowed one bit.

Just six weeks after landing the nation's top overall prospect in Daniel Gregory Kerkvliet, head coach Tom Ryan and recruiting guru Anthony Ralph scored the commitment of the nation's best available prospect in Olentangy Liberty standout Kharchla.

The No. 5 overall wrestler in the class according to InterMat and No. 10 overall according to FloWrestling, Kharchla won a state championship at 170 pounds in March, won the U.S. Marine Corps Junior National Championship in July, and won FloWrestling's "Who's Number One" tournament earlier this month.

Kharchla took official visits to Virginia, N.C. State, Minnesota and Oklahoma State this fall, in addition to a September visit down Route 315 to visit the Buckeyes.

"I'm just looking for a place that I can excel on and off the mat and a place where everyone is on the same page and everyone wants to get better and push others to get better as well," he said after announcing his final five schools in September.

The fast-rising star seemed to burst onto the scene this summer after winning his state title and then taking the tournament circuit by storm. He hadn't competed nationally much in high school, but his dominant performances at Fargo and WNO got the attention of the wrestling world.

The central Ohio star joins an absolutely stacked recruiting class, headlined by Kerkvliet and featuring fellow Ohioans Jacob and Jordan Decatur.

Thought we were looking good for Kharchla but make no bones about it, this is a HUGE commitment. Carson's potential is through the roof and I think he is just starting to scrape the surface on what he can do, really excited to get him on board. The 2019 class is insanely stacked for us.

The NCAA only allows 9.9 wrestling scholarships. Ohio State's wrestling site lists a roster of 34. Obviously not every one is on a full scholarship. I would think the "top recuits" (i.e. like Carson Kharchla) would have the leverage and could demand a full scholarship (or they could just go to another school that would give them one); however, there isn't enough scholarships for all the "top guys" they have. Any idea how Ohio State divides up the allocated scholarships?
