Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Up next is #1 Iowa and this one could get ugly in terms of team score...no real shot at winning, but hopefully we can keep it close. My best guess:

125: Time to see how much Malik has improved...he is not beating Lee, but keeping the match to a decision would be a great accomplishment and I think he keeps it to a decision somehow. Iowa 3 - OSU 0
133: Decatur has not really improved much that I can tell this year, so I see a bad loss to DeSanto...major decision, maybe a tech or fall. Iowa 7 - OSU 0
141: I can see Ech causing some fireworks and the matchup could be fun to watch against Eierman, both have funky and explosive styles. That said Ech is going to lose his first match of the year and probably bonus, I am guessing a major. Iowa 11 - OSU 0
149: Sasso has been streaky and Murin is a tough opponent, but I think Sasso pulls out a decision and gets us on the board. Iowa 11 - OSU 3
157: Young will likely rip Cleary apart, guessing another major decision or tech. Iowa 15 - OSU 3
165: Really excited to see how Smith matches up against Marinelli...I don't think Smith wins, but he could make it an interesting match...I say its Marinelli by decision. Iowa 18 - OSU 3
174: Romero vs. Kemerer is easily the match of the night, should be an amazing match. I know Kemerer is a monster, but I love how Romero is wrestling and I will take him in an upset over Kemerer. Iowa 18 - OSU 6
184: Brands is solid and Rocky should beat him if he wrestled to his ability...but he's nowhere close, Brands by decision. Iowa 21 - OSU 6
197: Warner wins easy over either Singletary or Hoffman...probably by major. Iowa 24 - OSU 6
HWT: Cassioppi probably wins this one handily, though heavyweight matches tend to be close, so I will say decision. Iowa 27 - OSU 6

Losing 27-6 might sound like a pessimistic outlook but being perfectly honest, there is little chance of it looking much better and far more chance it gets uglier than what I predicted with additional bonus points. Watch this one for the 3-4 individual matches that might be close and fun to watch, but don't get the hopes up for winning the dual.

I've heard Marinelli won't be wrestling Sunday, being replaced by a dude named Reyna (?). Don't know the injury problem he's dealing with, but I know he loves sticking it to Ohio so we'll see. Other than that you're unfortunately very accurate. Hope the 4:00 match with Purdue has a better result.

edit..just found out Marinelli is out because of Covid protocol

Bummer on Marinelli, that was one of the few matches that looked to be a close matchup... but that could tighten the dual some.

Well, the equation has changed some on Iowa with several of their best guys out (going off their dual against Purdue, which Iowa won 31-18). Lee is out at 125, Young at 157, and Marinelli out at 165. If we can get bonus at 125 and 165, and avoid as much Iowa bonus points, this could be close.

Sat Heinselmann and Decatur, Lee wrestled. We waved the white flag before the meet ever began, that's a chicken shit move and disappointing. I'm not even watching this dual, Ryan better have a damn good reason for this.

To his credit, sounds like Malik was not happy at all about that decision.

Also - it is frustrating to watch Rocky. Not the career I expected.

Oh I am sure Malik is pissed, that was a disservice to his progress and signaled to the team that the coaches didn't think we could win the dual before it even began...Malik needed to go against a guy like Lee to gauge his progress and prepare for the B1G tourney. Then we sit Decatur at 133. Result? The score looks even worse than it was, although it was pretty bad, albeit expected. Ech wrestled tough on his feet against Eierman and its just going to take time for him to wrestle on bottom, he is basically toast in that position having never wrestled folkstyle. Amazing match for Sasso, great offense and such strong and confident leg defense against a great wrestler, awesome pin...that is two falls against two top 5 guys (the other being Carr). Cleary won I guess, but against Young's backup by a point. Smith handled business, but disappointed we didn't get to see him against Marinelli. Romero was right in it but had no shot once he hurt his ankle...that said, he needed to open it up and get more aggressive on his feet, wrestled way too passive. Rocky just looks terrible to be frank, definitely not the career anyone expected...I wonder if Hoffman could get back down to 184 because I don't even know if Rocky could win a match at the NCAA's. Singletary was clearly outmatched against Warner, same at heavy.

The issue to me is pretty clear at this point, which is that none of Jacob Decatur, Jordan Decatur, Rocky Jordan, Gavin Hoffman or Chase Singletary are even close to what they were ranked coming out of high school, which is insane because usually high school recruiting rankings hold pretty true. Probably can through Orndorff in there, although he just transferred and might need time. All of these guys are losing by a lot to guys that were ranked near or even below them coming out of HS. Malik finally seems to be getting close, though he was ranked #1 coming out of HS. I know we weren't beating Iowa, but the point remains and I don't think we sniff top 5 at the NCAA's this year. There is a very real chance we might not get more than 2-3 guys on the podium (those being Sasso, Smith and Romero).

Heinselmann and Decatur both wrestled against Purdue... with that, I can go ahead and say confidently I'm fucking pissed at the staff for the Iowa dual. In an ordinary season, maybe I get that to rest up for a run, but we will be lucky to be in the top 10 nationally this year. These guys need matches with the short schedule and all we did was mind fuck Malik and Decatur by dodging Iowa. I've never once criticized Ryan but I'm going to criticize him big time here, I'm ashamed of the coaching against Iowa. Put the best guys on the mat and battle, we regressed today because of that.
