Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

I think it's reasonable to wonder about the motives that led to this story resurfacing about a former assistant who happened to become a big-time politician, but not also the HOF head coach who was right there for 20 years. He's mentioned but almost as a footnote to the Jordan narrative. It's really a strange story all around.
first, this "story" isn't about a former assistant. this investigation is about a university employee who, according to multiple ex-athletes from over 10 sports, sexually assaulted those under his care.

second, lightning tends to hit the tallest tree. of freakin' course the spotlight is going to be on a national figure who is known from coast to coast rather than a coach or a bunch of coaches that the overwhelming majority of ohio state fans could never pick from a lineup, let alone have even heard of. drop the name "hellickson" on a bunch of fans at the shoe on a football saturday, and i guarantee you that no more than 2 out of 100 would know whom you're talking about. but congressman jordan? yeah, i think you'll get a slightly different response.

and as far as the timing of the allegations and the investigation, well, my guess it has a lot more to do with the airing of msu's dirty laundry and the whole movement of outing the cover-ups of sexual crimes than it does one assistant coach from one of the 10+ programs allegedly affected.

reading the thread about this on osu's 247 site, it's clear to me that the only differences between our fanbase and penn state's are wins and miles.

it's hardly incompatible to be a good guy who has done a lot of good things but also one who 25 years ago downplayed the impact of a doctor being "touchy" with those under his care. especially when there is the dissonance that many of those allegedly affected were strong young men. moreover, i think i need to remind some here that ex-athletes from at least 14 sports have come forward about strauss. if players confided in jordan, then he sure as heck wasn't the only coach or administrator approached. and yet this was kept quiet for how many years?

and, again, the "no way, he's too good of a man" dismissal was pretty much the stock response on bwi and audibles almost a decade ago. that's not to say that allegations should be assumed to be truthful merely because they're increasingly common or that a solid reputation isn't without cause; however, it is to say that men without ugly skeletons in their closet exist only in one's imagination. by now it should be clear that athletic departments will go to great and unfortunate lengths to uphold reputations and maintain the status quo.

Frankly Buckguys's PSU comparison is pretty hyperbolic and equally out of place in this neutral wrestling thread.
right... it's not as though plenty of osu fans haven't already claimed those speaking out are in it just for the money. or that those speaking out are liars because a couple have questionable pasts. or that this whole ordeal is a conspiracy. or that the investigation has questionable motives and allegiances.

Some future/potential future Buckeye news after Freestyle nationals in Fargo, the most difficult off-season tourney (maybe toughest period) out there:

132: Buckeye commitment Jordan Decatur won the tourney with a 13-8 decision of Ridge Lovett from Idaho, a very good wrestler. Lovett took out the #2 wrestler in the country in Beau Bartlett and D'Emilio to get to the finals...very impressive, but shows how elite Decatur is to handle him like that. Excellent tournament from Jordan. Fellow Buckeye commit Dylan D'Emilio took 6th.

138: Carson Manville - Just dominated everyone and will only be a sophomore next year. Definitely a prospect we will pursue, as will everyone. Kid is likely the next thing in wrestling, ungodly good.

170: Carson Kharchla of Olentangy Liberty won the tourney in an absolutely dominant fashion, nearly tech falling everyone except one guy...Travis Wittlake, the #1 wrestler in the country, who he beat by 7-4. Kharchla has to be a priority for Ryan to keep in Columbus, this kid's ceiling is unreal and he is just starting to realize his potential. Must get for the next recruiting class.

#1 heavyweight in the country for the upcoming year Greg Kerkvliet (senior-to-be) just de-committed from OK State and has a list of Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska and OK State. I think we are in a pretty good position here. I don't see him going back to OK State and Penn State just got a verbal from #6 HWT Seth Nevills. Of course recruits stack up at the same weight at PSU, but heavyweight just isn't one of those weights where that typically happens. While we have Singletary just coming into his RS Freshman year, Nebraska has Austin Emerson likely stepping in as a RS Freshman, who was the #6 HWT coming out of HS. And Singletary will be a Soph by the time Kerkvliet would get in.

It will be a battle to land him for sure, but I like where we stand here. Looking for academics and has Olympic aspirations (he is a freestyle phenom), and Columbus is the perfect spot for that with Snyder, Tervel and the RTC right there. Definitely keep an eye on this one.

Got another commitment in Tyler Stein, a heavyweight from Canfield for the '19 class. State champion at 220 last year and ranked #11 at that weight by Flo Wrestling. Nice commitment and just needs to catch his technique up with his physical ability and strength. Kid is a specimen, just needs consistency. But that was the same knock I had on a "lowly" ranked Kollin Moore  Great commitment.

And I don't see this commitment having any bearing on Kerkvliet, although the recent scuttlebutt is that things were trending away for us there anyways...but wrestling recruiting news in the summer is usually as suspect as it gets, so anything but a commitment should be taken with a metric ton grain of salt.

ANTHONY RALPH NAMED DIRECTOR OF RECRUITING, BO JORDAN NAMED VOLUNTEER COACH FOR OHIO STATE WRESTLING

95823_h.jpg

Recruiting is the lifeblood of collegiate sport, and Ohio State has been recruiting wrestling talent at an elite level. The program's ace in the hole, Anthony Ralph, was named director of recruiting and operations on Wednesday, as head coach Tom Ryan named three new members of his staff.

Bo Jordan, a four-time All-American for the Buckeyes, joins the staff as volunteer coach, while Riley Ross and Ryan Mantel join the program as director of wresting sports science & performance and assistant director of operations, respectively.

Ralph has served as volunteer coach the past two seasons, and has quickly established himself as one of the top recruiters in the country. Formerly head coach at Notre Dame College, he signed the top Division II recruiting class in the country from 2012-2016, according to Amateur Wrestling News, prior to joining the staff at Ohio State.

“Anthony has been instrumental in our recruiting success,” said head coach Tom Ryan. “We are really fortunate that our administration and the university has supported us in transitioning Coach Ralph from on the mat into a Director of Recruiting & Operations role that will allow him to concentrate and put forth full-time focus on recruiting and operations.”

OHIO STATE'S WRESTLING STARTING LINEUP COULD FEATURE AS MANY AS FOUR FRESHMEN THIS SEASON

96126_h.jpg

Kyle Snyder, Bo Jordan and Nathan Tomasello will never again wrestle under the aegis of The Ohio State University. Three of the most successful wrestlers in program history finished their collegiate careers on a national runner-up team last March at the NCAA Championship in Cleveland.

Replacing them, each four-time All Americans, with Snyder a three-time NCAA champ and Tomasello never finishing worse than third in the final tournament of the season, is no small task. Head coach Tom Ryan knows that if his squad is to have a shot at back-to-back-to-back Big Ten titles – let alone have any hope of toppling Penn State's NCAA tournament dynasty – the young guns have to live up to some lofty expectations.

"This team could see as many as four freshmen in the lineup," Ryan told Eleven Warriors. "I hope they do as well as freshmen as Kyle, Nate and Bo did."

Ryan pointed out that the last time the Buckeyes won a national title, those three men were freshmen getting their first taste of big-time college wrestling. For those freshmen hoping to crack the starting lineup, the next six weeks are crucial.

"Last summer there would had to have been a major development in a given weight class to not know who the starter was going to be," Ryan explained. "This year we have five returning All Americans, which is a great nucleus, but there are five other weight classes that are up for grabs."

AGE AND EXPERIENCE
That nucleus of returning All Americans includes Luke Pletcher (133 pounds), Joey McKenna (141), Micah Jordan (157), Myles Martin (184) and Kollin Moore (197).

Martin won the NCAA title in 2016 and was national-runner up in each of the past two seasons; he may be the early favorite to win it all this season with Bo Nickal moving up to 197 pounds. Moore, who had something of an up-and-down season last year, will contend for that title, but faces a bigger challenge in Nickal than he would have from the rest of the field.

Pletcher and McKenna will again be in contention to wrestle in the latter rounds of the NCAA tournament, and bring a great deal of talent and experience back to their respective weight classes.

NATION'S TOP WRESTLING RECRUIT AND CADET WORLD CHAMPION DANIEL GREGORY KERKVLIET COMMITS OHIO STATE

96325_h.jpeg

Ohio State just landed the top wrester in the country.

Daniel Kerkvliet, the No. 1 wrestler on FloWrestling's 2019 big board, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes via Instagram two days after his visit to Ohio State.

"When I took my visit there it felt like the perfect fit," he said in the post announcing his commitment to Tom Ryan's program.

A senior from Simley, Minnesota, Kerkvliet originally committed to wrestle at home-state Minnesota back in 2016, and at one point was slated to wrestle for Oklahoma State. He reopened his commitment to the Cowboys in July, and the Buckeyes put on a full-court press to earn the blue-chipper's pledge.

"I am looking for the best environment where I can make a long-term commitment, much longer than just the five years I will be wrestling in college," Kerkvliet told FloWrestling in July. That last comment was foreshadowing his eventual decision, as the heavyweight prospect will have the opportunity to train alongside Kyle Snyder, who continues to train at the Ohio Regional Training Center in preparation for defending his World and Olympic titles.

Kerkvliet won the Cadet World Championship in freestyle last year, and was a finalist again this summer. He was slated to wrestle for the 97 kg title at the Junior World Championships later this month, but USA Wrestling announced Monday that a recent injury would keep him from competing at the tournament.

The Buckeyes seem to have their 285-pound roster set for the foreseeable future, with former top-heavyweight prospect Chase Singletary set to take over for Snyder this fall, and the top recruit in the country now added to the mix. Kerkvliet was slated to wrestle at 220-pounds for his senior season, so it's possible that he – like Snyder before him – sees time at 197 pounds following Kollin Moore.
