OL Ben Person (official thread)

Yeah, I thought I read somewhere that BSB was the new Scout.com OSU affiliate.

Great story about Ben...thrilled he's worked so hard to earn his shot.

Hope he has a monster season in front of Beanie.

Ben Person found that out. He was one of three offensive linemen in the recruiting class of 2004, along with Jon Skinner and Kyle Mitchum. All three redshirted, then played sparingly in 2005. Entering last season, Person looked at the depth chart. He saw Skinner and Mitchum listed as second-teamers. He didn't see his name.

"That's when it really hit home," Person said. "It was kind of a reality check for me."

Like Abdallah, he started working harder, coming out early to practice and staying late, focusing on his technique. This past spring, Person worked as the starting right guard, a spot he still holds.

"I wasn't mad at anybody about it at all," he said of his years in obscurity. "I was kind of upset with myself because I didn't put myself in position to be where I wanted to be."

Xenia's Person fighting for starting job at right guard
The fourth-year junior lineman has proved he's finally ready, but he won't let his guard down.

COLUMBUS ? Offensive lineman Ben Person was willing to accept being relegated to the bench during his first two years at Ohio State, knowing he'd need some time before playing significantly.

But failing to crack the starting lineup as a third-year sophomore last season left the Xenia native more angry than a bull with a matador in its sights.

"I wasn't mad at (the coaches) at all ? I was upset with myself," he said. "I didn't put myself in position to be where I wanted to be."

On the offensive line

"Well with mostly new guys it has been a whole new line. We have made good strides and we are getting better every day."

On Michigan State

"This is a big challenge. This is the best defensive line we have faced so far. The blitz a lot and we have to be prepared to handle that."

"From what I have seen he has always commanded the huddle. He has gotten more comfortable since his first game and he has really grown as a player. He has been our leader since he stepped on the field."

Met him this summer at a wedding reception. I generally don't approach Buckeyes out in public, but my 5 year old son couldn't resist. I just told him to say hi real quick and before I knew it- Ben bent down to 4 ft to look my son in the eye and shake his hand then preceeded to talk to him for a minute. Class act for sure.
