OL Bryant Browning (Official Thread)

BB is probably the classiest player I came across in my time at OSU. He is a smart, hardworking young man with a great, can do attitude. I guess a way I can describe him would be a friendlier, more personable Kirk Barton in the way he focuses on football and really puts the time and effort into his game and his studies.

btw, Kirk is a good guy. Those that know him know he is someone who gets SUPER serious when it comes to football (practice, film, and of course game time.. BB just does it with a friendly demeanor and a smile.

Go Bucks

BB definitely a "first-class" guy and a terrific student. I fully expect him to be a solid guard at the next level given his hardworking mentality. It has been a joy to watch his steady improvement at tOSU.

One More To Go For Browning

December 21, 2010
Two dozen Ohio State seniors are preparing to give it one last go in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4 as the No. 6 Buckeyes will face No. 8 Arkansas in the New Orleans Superdome.

Among the 24 outgoing players are six OSU co-captains. Perhaps the quietest and least ballyhooed of that group is offensive right guard Bryant Browning, who just graduated and has one last task as a Buckeye: win his last collegiate game.

A 6-4, 313-pounder, Bryant was valedictorian of his class at Cleveland Glenville and carried that commitment to academics with him at Ohio State. He also is considered to be one of the affable players on the team, quite an accomplishment for someone who overcame the tragedy of his mother dying suddenly when he was just 12 years old.

We caught up with Browning recently and asked his thoughts on several pertinent topics with the Sugar Bowl looming. The following are Bryant?s answers:

On Arkansas? aggressive defense ? ?It seems like they have pretty big, strong guys and they?re quick at the same time. They fly around, they definitely get after the ball, they get after the passer, they try to make big plays. They really try to get after the offensive line and try to disrupt everything.?

Gotta chance to meet Bryant, Brian Rolle and Jermale Hines yesterday at Shriners Hospital in Tampa. Every year the players from the game visit the hospital and have fun with the kids. My son (8 yrs old) goes to Shriners for treatment for Cerebral Palsy.... At the start of the event they have a number of speakers including the coaches (Dan Reeves and Wade Phillips)... after all the speeches they told the players to go have fun with the kids... my son makes a straight line for the East team, as he approaches the players go to greet him and he responds "I'm just looking for Buckeyes" and blows off most of the players. We find Browning, Rolle and Hines in the back and proceed to get pictures and autographs. All three talk with my kid about the Sugar Bowl and the fact that he plays tackle football even with CP. After that they go off and interact with more kids and sign autographs, we do the same... great bunch of guys. About a half hour later my son runs into Browning again and they proceed to play catch and play on the playground together for about the next 45 minutes. He was great with the kids. When I asked my son what they talked about he said they were giving the players from PSU, Iowa, Purdue and Oregon crap about OSU beating them (all in good fun).

here's a pic that sums up the event for me... overall a great experience with all the players... they made a lot of kids happy yesterday

I don't think they are on TV but the practices are open to the public... if you happen to be in the Orlando area of course... I believe the game is on the NFL Network this year so you may want to check there...

Ohio State offensive guard Bryant Browning did a nice job in pass protection at times today during the one-on-one drills. He?s a bit sloppy in the mid-section and isn?t the most natural benders, at times getting doubled over at the waist, but he?s a long kid who does a nice job extending his arms into contact and gaining leverage at the point. At times he got himself in trouble because his hand placement was poor ? too high ? allowing defenders to get under him, but his ability to play long and stick to blocks through contact will definitely give him a shot of holding up inside at the next level as a potential roster guy.

Bryant Browning
G, Ohio State

War Room analysis
Strengths: Has a wide, thick build with adequate arm length to develop at the position at the next level. Has above average short-area quickness in his play. Works to finish and sustain his blocks in the run game. Has above average strength to anchor down in pass protection. Has game experience at both right tackle and right guard.

Weaknesses: Is a marginal athlete with slow feet, limited lateral range, and marginal agility on the move. Has below average lower body flexibility and strength as a drive run blocker at the point of attack. Can collision as a puller, but really struggles to adjust to sustain his blocks on the move. Has marginal range to cutoff the backside outside linebacker and simply cannot sustain a reach block consistently. Has poor lateral quickness and limited recognition ability in pass protection.

Bottom line: Browning is a three-year starter on the offensive line for the Buckeyes. He has started the past two seasons at right guard, after starting off at right tackle back in 2008. He lacks any real athletic upside to ever become a starter at the NFL level. He has enough size and ability to serve as a back-up only. He is most effective at getting in the way within a short area. He has the bad habit of putting his hands outside the frame of the defender too often. In pass protection, he can anchor down against a bull rusher and flashes a good punch at times. He struggles to mirror against stunts/twists.

Hate to sound like a broken record but if you have bad technique as a senior, that's bad coaching...plain and simple
Unless the player is limited physically from being able to perform in the "proper" manner of technique. Which is a possibility, given the other comments about Bryant's athletic abilities.

I really hope Browning is able to overcome whatever limitations he has and become an NFL player. But if he's not, he's demonstrated the character and intellect to excel in other areas. Good luck to him!

Bryant Browning didn't run because he strained his right hamstring, but he'll likely run at Cam Heyward's workout in late March. Said he thinks he can play all five positions on the offensive line, and will be working on taking snaps as well.

Buckeye drawing interest Aaron Wilson
April 10, 2011

Ohio State offensive guard Bryant Browning has visits with the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers and a private workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Browning is a three-year starter and team captain for the Buckeyes.

The 6-foot-3, 316-pounder wasn't invited to the NFL scouting combine.

He was an honorable-mention All-Big Ten Conference selection who has played bot hoffensive tackle and guard, lining up at right guard for the past two seasons.

As a senior, he was one of 11 honorees for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Browning ranked first academically in his high school graduating class, and played in the Big 33 All-Star game.
