"Unlucky" Datish will miss season

Flowery Branch ? Rookie center Doug Datish, a sixth-round draft pick from Ohio State, was placed on injured reserve by the Falcons on Saturday in a series of moves.

Datish's move means he will miss the season. He broke a finger on his left hand in organized training activities and broke his right wrist Thursday.

"Datish is an unlucky guy," Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay said.

The Falcons had hoped that Datish would provide depth behind starting center Todd McClure and possibly help at guard.

Oh, I need to clear something up too since there was some confusion about what took place with rookie center Doug Datish, who had surgery today to repair a broken bone in his wrist.

Datish was placed on injured reserve, which means he is done for the season and the Falcons hold his rights. However, before placing him on IR, the Falcons, for procedural reasons, waived him (injured). It?s one of those quirky paperwork-type deals that are required by the league.

In the end, Datish is on IR and he?s still with the Falcons.

Datish returns after lost season

Center Doug Datish, one of the Falcons' four sixth-round picks last season, is back on the field after a hard-luck rookie campaign.

During training camp, Datish suffered a dislocated finger on his left hand that required surgery. He then broke his right wrist and was placed on injured reserve for the season.

"I couldn't play with two casts so they threw me on IR," Datish said. "I hadn't missed a game my whole life, so to miss a whole year was pretty bad."

Datish used the time to work on his legs and lower-body strength.

"I couldn't use my arms so all I did was lift my legs all day," he said.

Falcons release 2007 draft pick Datish
The Associated Press --

ATLANTA --For the second time in seven days, the Atlanta Falcons are cutting loose a recent draft pick.

The Falcons released center Doug Datish, a sixth-round pick in 2007 who never played with the team, on Monday.

Datish (6-4, 305) missed the 2007 season after suffering a broken wrist in the preseason.

Datish, from Ohio State, is the second recent draft pick to be released within a week. The Falcons released 2006 second-round pick Jimmy Williams, a defensive back, on Tuesday.
