OL Orlando Pace (7-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl Champion, CFB HOF, NFL HOF)

I'll just never understand ol' Coop, I guess. I met him once, very nice man. Problem is, every time it seems like people are finally moving past his record in the last 2 games of every year and the MSU loss and focusing on the good things he did, he feels the need to interject himself during Michigan week or bowl week...presumably to defend himself somehow. Unfortunately, all he's doing is pulling the scab off, and he borders on looking whiny and petulant when he seemingly tries to minimize what Tressel has done by saying he had it so much harder, though I'm sure that's not what he's actually trying to do. If he just let it the fuck go, he might generate the level of respect at least that Earle Bruce has garnered from many fans (but not all, of course) over the years, but he just can't seem to do that.

The only power index of which I am aware that you can get conference power ratings since 1995 is Darryl Marsee's. The Big Ten was the best conference in 1995 and 1995 but also more recently in 2005.

The worst year for the conference was 1997. In general, the point Dryden makes, that the Big Ten teams were tougher during the Cooper era, is supported by Marsee's data. I list this below for convenience.

However, the case against John Cooper is what he did with the talent that he had, especially in The Game.

In this period, John Cooper lost to TSUN two times when his team had a higher power rating, even taking into account that his team's final power rating (which is shown here) was reduced by the loss to TSUN.

Tressel has never lost to TSUN when his team had a higher power rating. He has won twice when his team had a lower power rating, even taking into account that his team's power rating was increased by beating TSUN that year.

I don't think he is actively looking to interject himself, but I think the media seeks him out and asks him about it.

Exactly. I know how burned/hurt I was each year when we struggled during our final 2 games, and Coop may not be "the final word" on all things Ohio State/Michigan, but people seek him out because he's still active with Ohio State. While I was ready for Cooper's tenure to end, I'm thankful for the good things he did for Ohio State and am glad he's still around. I wish folks could get behind him.

Same here. I started following tOSU football a little later than most people here probably, but before the 2002 NC bandwagon fans. He may not have won when it counted, but he brought some of my all time favorites to Columbus; Eddie, Pace, Katzenmoyer, etc.

As an outsider, I hear often from LJB and others about the Buckeyes record, the excellence as reflected in wins and losses, and the number of bowls in which the Bucks participated.

It strikes me that part of the glory that is tOSU past is an incredibly fine record of wins and losses, albeit a lack of success in The Game. And while that is justifiably a reason to go another direction after so many losses, it in no way negates from the fine record Cooper achieved in a period when the Big 10 was a far better conference overall.

Put simply, if you have (justifiably) a feeling of pride for the accomplishments of tOSU and its fine win-loss record, you have to give the man credit for his role in achieving that success.

As an outsider, I have always been mystified at the low opinion in which he is held by your fanbase, even considering his record versus the weasels.

It's really hard to talk about Cooper without bashing him, so I won't. I just don't think he ever got it and I am very pleased that Jim Tressel treats him with more respect than most Ohio State fans would.

The first three words are why its mystifying to you. Not trying to be a dick, I don't expect outsiders to get it.

It just means that much to us.

:io:

I may get some grief for saying this, but I actually sent Coach Cooper a letter of support late in his tenure.

Dispite his terrible record vs. M*chigan, I just couldn't bring myself to completely trash him for consistent 9 and 10 win seasons.

You pick at the scab to remind everyone how good it is to beat the shit out of these fuckers, no matter how bad they are this year. They made the scab, and now they are paying...

Fuck *ichigan!!!!
