OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I think the approach with a “potential” 4th spot would be, sign Liddell in the Fall, then keep tabs through Spring and see what happens. Transfer, early Pro entry, whatever, and maybe that 4th opens.

After the Harvey thing kind of fell out, I just don't see us going after 4 in this class. Sure, spots might open up, in fact I think 1 or 2 probably will, but I think the staff would rather have a roster of 11 or 12 and a little more space to work with in the subsequent classes than maxing out the roster and having only two sure bet scholarships for 2020.

If we don't get EJ I am not even sure we add a third in the 2019 class. I don't think we're trending for any of our other top targets, and even guys like Wahab and Lorca-Lloyd are leaning elsewhere at the moment. The staff will keep recruiting, of course, because I don't think they want a 2-man 2019 class and they would probably like to inject as much talent as they can, but I don't think they'd make any strong pushes for anyone other than their top choices and right now a lot of those guys are looking more likely to end up elsewhere.

A note on Johnson... even if we got him, he'd be going on a Mormon mission, so he wouldn't enroll until 2021. So he actually does make a lot of sense (Potter and Kaleb would both be gone). And I do think the staff has to recruit other bigs besides Loveday, you really can't count on landing him, he is pretty open.

I agree if the staff was looking to take 4 this class then they would have to commit now with Harvey or any of the others guard prospects, but instead we are slow playing/ not recruiting. The only possible chance of the forth now is if we get EJ in fall and for some reason Newman hangs on till spring. All in all, I would expect three.

No one on this team is going pro early next year. I think a 3 man class makes the most sense, though I could make an argument for taking a big in the '19 class and reshirting them.

Edited to add; I wonder if Holt is going the way of no true center. I know we have some interest in some true defensive bigs, but I've always been a proponent of playing a couple of power forward types that can both invert and are quick enough to handle a lot of switches on d. with the nba pretty much abandoning the true center, I think it would make a lot of sense to play a couple of guys like ledee, gaffney, liddell, etc at the 4 and 5. allows you to get up and down the floor better and pressure the ball more on d.

Ohio State on the verge of landing an elite basketball class?

The Buckeyes’ basketball recruiting in 2019 is taking the Big Ten by storm.

Liddell.0.jpg

Not to change the subject during football season too much, but the Ohio State hoops program is really doing a fantastic job on all fronts. To have a team predicted in 2017-18 as a bottom tier team in the conference and prove everyone wrong on the court was refreshing to say the least. The Holtmann hire has made everyone a believer and it doesn’t look like the believing will be turning to doubt any time soon.

Top three for one of the top dudes
Some of the key pieces that Holtmann and his staff have been able to make happen is recruiting on an elite level. When the Ohio State basketball teams were at their best, they had elite recruits on the roster. It’s pretty simple: Great players make great teams. The Buckeyes currently have the nation’s seventh best recruiting class in 2019 and, more impressively, the top class in the Big Ten for this current cycle. One of the main reasons is because DJ Carton, a five-star point guard, is already in the fold for Ohio State. If the Buckeyes want to move up the rankings, they’ll have to get at least one more elite level player. Fortunately, that may not be too far off from happening.

Enter Illinois native EJ Liddell, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound power forward, and you have the final piece Ohio State wants to add to their already very talented 2019 class. Liddell is considered to be the top player in the state of Illinois for this class. Not to mention, he’s also the tenth best power forward in the country. With his combination of size and range, Liddell can easily make plays under the basket and also be a dominant force on defense. A player with continued potential, Liddell likely hasn’t even seen his ceiling of ability yet. A testament of excitement for any coach, the chance to land EJ is obviously something coveted by many top programs. Not too long ago, Liddell trimmed his offer list down to five schools. Yesterday, though, the trimming continued as it was made public that it’s now down to three schools: Illinois, Missouri and Ohio State.

If you’re wondering about Ohio State’s chances, the 247sports crystal ball has the Buckeyes owning 86 percent of the predictions, and Missouri having the other 14 percent. Don’t count out the home state Fighting Illini, but this looks to be a little bit of a two horse race at the moment. Ohio State has to like where they stand, and if they are able to bring in another top caliber player, Holtmann and company will have cemented themselves a top-notch class.

Standout Georgia guard visits Ohio State

Chris Holtmann and the basketball Buckeyes played host to one of the top 2020 prospects Georgia has to offer over the weekend.

Georgia native visits Ohio State

While Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football squad were in Happy Valley taking on Penn State, Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes basketball program were home in Columbus playing host to one of the top class of 2020 prospects the state of Georgia has to offer.

Making the trek from the Peach State to the Ohio State University campus, junior guard/forward Toneari Lane had the chance to get a closer look at what the Buckeyes have to offer on and off the basketball court.

"It was a really good experience. I had a chance to watch their practice and see how they get after it. And afterwards I took a tour around the school and in the locker room. I loved the visit to Columbus,” the Shiloh High School standout stated to Land-Grant Holy Land.

Having a chance to spend some time with coach Holtmann on his trip, the Buckeye boss didn’t shy away from just how much Ohio State is interested in the under-the-radar combo guard.

Lane remarked, “He said that he doesn’t invite a lot of players to the campus of Ohio State, so for him to invite me is saying that he is highly interested in me, and that he’s going to come down to Georgia to watch me work out and play.”

With offers from Auburn, Ole Miss, and others currently on the table, Lane might not have a scholarship from the Buckeyes at the moment, but it isn’t something he would take very lightly if one does come his way in the future.

“If Ohio State offers me then I’m going to be very excited and they’re easily going to be in my top two.” Said, Lane.

See a little of what caught Holtmann and the Buckeyes eye with these highlights of Toneari Lane in game action.
