New Recruiting rules

Don't know if this is new and I have no idea where to put it into his old or new. If it is old or new sort of feel sorry for everyone involved both recruits and coaches.

 Beginning today, Division I men?s coaches will be able to send unlimited texts and make unlimited calls to recruits who have finished their sophomore year of high school. The NCAA also will allow coaches to send private messages to prospective players through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Buckeyes coaches will swing into their next cycle beginning on Wednesday, when the annual summer evaluation period begins and coaches fan out across the country to see prospects play in AAU tournaments. The period this year will be 15 days in three five-day segments: July 11-15, 18-22 and 25-29.

Ohio State has three scholarships to offer to the class of 2013, and Matta said he is looking for ?the best players we can get.? Pressed on the matter, he acknowledged ?we could use? more big men.

Sophomores Amir Williams and Trey McDonald are the only interior players in the program besides Evan Ravenel, who will be a senior. For the second year in a row, the roster will have only one senior.

?As you?re looking at what we lost out on (in recruiting) this year, everybody forgets we only had one senior and one junior on our team,? Matta said. ?That makes recruiting very, very difficult when you?re recruiting the elite of the elite and you?ve got 11 freshmen and sophomores.

?It?s more a numbers game than it is the brand of Ohio State.?

Many elite recruits, in their own minds or the minds of those in their ears, dream of being one-and-done, so they want to play immediately, and play a lot, before heading to the NBA. None of the five freshmen on the Ohio State roster last season averaged more than 11 minutes a game.

?I think that?s maybe the biggest challenge we?ve faced,? Matta said.

That's just a couple more that are listed in the BP Recruiting forum but don't ask me which ones we do not have listed:wink:

The only offer he has listed that we do not is Justise Winslow, 6-5, 208, W, Houston (St. John's).

BP also has a guy by the name of Eubanks listed that Bob Baptist does not have listed. Also, Baptist has some guys listed for 2014 that are off of our Board because of lack of interest or already committed.

2013 recruiting update

It's been a few weeks since I posted the recruiting primer for this fall, and there have been a few changes, and if you aren't a follower of @BBaptistHoops on Twitter, you may be unaware of those changes.


First, guard Allerik Freeman of Charlotte, N.C., who is playing his senior year at Findlay Prep in Nevada, was to have made an official visit to Ohio State this weekend. But he made his official to UCLA last weekend and committed on the spot.


So the Buckeyes' coaching staff adjusted and brought in Baltimore guard Kameron Williams this weekend.


Below is more of what I've been able to gather from websites and elsewhere regarding the players the Buckeyes seem to be in the best shape with for their class of 2013. With Toledo St. John's wing Marc Loving already committed, they have at least three scholarships available, more if there are early departures after the season. The early signing period is Nov. 14-21.

3 official visits this weekend

The No.2-rated center in the 2013 recruiting class, BeeJay Anya of Gaithersburg, Md., wing Ishmail Wainwright of Raytown, Mo., and power forward Nigel Hayes of Toledo are scheduled to make official visits to Ohio State this weekend and take in the Buckeyes' football game against Nebraska on Saturday night in Ohio Stadium.

- Anya, 6 feet 9 and 275 pounds, from DeMatha Catholic High School in suburban Washington, is ranked No. 30 overall in the ESPN100 and 40th in the RSCI, a consensus ranking from seven recruiting services. He has visited North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Louisville. He plans to make his fifth and final visit to Indiana on Oct. 19-21 for Hoosier Hysteria, the IU version of Midnight Madness but a week later than the start of practice.

- Wainwright, 6-6 and 220, is playing his senior year at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md. He is ranked No. 26 overall in the ESPN100 and 36th in the RSCI after not being able to play during the July evaluation period because of a stress fracture in his left ankle that required surgery. Wainwright's final four also include Baylor, St. John's and Texas. He told Scout.com in July that he and Julius Randle of Dallas have talked about playing together in college, but that is not guaranteed. The only common school among their finalists is Texas.

- Hayes, 6-7 and 215, plays at Toledo Whitmer and is the younger brother of former Ohio State defensive lineman Kenny Hayes, who left school earlier this year and has since transferred to Toledo. Nigel Hayes is unranked in the ESPN100 or RSCI but is rated No. 27 among power forwards by ESPN. He is an All-Ohio Red AAU teammate of Toledo St. John's wing Marc Loving, who has been committed to Ohio State for two years. Hayes has visited Minnesota, Wisconsin and Stanford and does not have a fifth visit scheduled.

I know that we have Loving and Williams coming in next year but I don't believe we are in very good shape for anyone else because I still don't have a very good feeling about Hayes plus we need another big man unless McDonald really improves and can back up Williams next year.

Well Litl, I feel OSU has a good chance at Hayes. He's said OSU was his dream school, and that he wants to win multiple championships in college - you don't go to Wisconsin to win championships.

I have changed my mind about the big man need. I feel that OSU can hold pat where they're at, which will enable them to get a high profile big man in the 2014 class (perhaps Okafor), or they will have a good pitch to sell a graduate transfer on for a year. Matta actually has gotten by with basically 2 players at the 5 for many of his seasons at OSU. Obviously stocking the roster with many top-100 players has made recruiting OOS players tough sledding in the 2013 class.
