OSU/Toledo home and home (2009 and 2011)

I'm not sure I understand the rationale for holding one of the games at Brown Stadium. It will probably be a "neutral site" in name only, and one with 50% less capacity at that, as compared to Ohio Stadium. I'd think it would make more sense to hold both games in the Shoe for a bigger payday to both athletic departments.

How many Cleveland area recruits could we get to this game?

I'm just sayin'...

A valid point, but it doesn't seem that OSU is lacking for exposure in NE Ohio, or has any difficulty getting Cleveland area recruits to Columbus. Or so I would guess. Maybe that's it, though. Or maybe Toledo for some reason greatly prefers a 10% fan presence in the stadium to a 5% fan presence.

SPORTS HOT ISSUE: Are you in favor of Ohio State putting a priority on choosing in-state schools as nonconference football opponents?

Ohio State and Toledo have agreed to a two-game series in football that will begin Sept. 19, 2009, in Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Buckeyes and Rockets will play again Sept. 10, 2011, in Columbus. The announcement was made today by OSU athletics director Eugene Smith.

“We are excited by the opportunity to have a presence in the Cleveland area.” Smith said. “We have a tremendous fan base there, and this should be a great experience for them and for our players, especially those players from Cleveland and the surrounding area.

“While I wasn't here in 2002 when Ohio State played in Cincinnati, I am told that game was a huge success. I expect the same type of excitement when we go to Cleveland.”

Smith said that the games with Toledo are in line with Ohio State's philosophy of trying to schedule in-state schools whenever possible for nonconference games.

“We think it makes sense to schedule Ohio schools whenever we can,” he said. “Usually those games will be played in Ohio Stadium, but every so often a unique opportunity like this presents itself. I view this as a win-win situation for everyone.”

Ohio State and Toledo have met once, in 1998, when the Buckeyes won 49-0 in Columbus.

The only way that OSU will play a mid major "on the road" will be at a neutral site. Most of the MAC stadiums don't hold enough to support the game and the MAC school will make more money by hosting the game a neutral site which is bigger than their own stadium. Iowa is doing the same thing with Norther Illinois by playing them at Soldier Field. It is a good way for mid majors to play the big boys without having to go into hostile territory and still getting a good payday.

The UC game at Paul Brown had a pretty good turnout for UC fans. Had UC wanted to play the game at Nippert, it would have never happened.

I agree with you, tlangs, but I don't think anyone was wondering why this game isn't in Toledo. That, as you say, wouldn't be a viable option. This particular case of a "neutral site" however is really going to be a Buckeye home game, in a way that is different from Soldier Field, or even Paul Brown in Cincy. That being the case, why not just make it official by moving it to Columbus and increase the ticket receipts by 50% for a bigger payout for both teams?

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Ohio State and Toledo have agreed to a two-game package in football, beginning Sept. 19, 2009 with a game that will be played in Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Buckeyes and Rockets also will play Sept. 10, 2011 in Columbus.

The series was announced today by Ohio State's Director of Athletics Eugene Smith.

"We are excited by the opportunity to have a presence in the Cleveland area." said Smith. "We have a tremendous fan base there and this should be a great experience for them and for our players, especially those players from Cleveland and the surrounding area.

"While I wasn't here in 2002 when Ohio State played in Cincinnati, I am told that game was a huge success. I expect the same type of excitement when we go to Cleveland."

Smith explained the games with Toledo are in line with the Ohio State philosophy of trying to schedule in-state schools whenever possible for non-conference games.

"We think it makes sense to schedule Ohio schools whenever we can," he said. "Usually those games will be played in Ohio Stadium, but every so often a unique opportunity like this presents itself. I view this as a win-win situation for everyone."

Ohio State and Toledo have played just once previously, the Buckeyes downing the Rockets, 49-0, in 1998 in Columbus.

This will be Ohio State's fifth appearance in Cleveland. The Buckeyes defeated Illinois in 1942, lost to Purdue in 1943, defeated Illinois in 1944 and Northwestern in 1991. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->
