2020 Out-of-State Players to Watch

Michigan star has no shortage of interest in Ohio State

One of Michigan’s best certainly wouldn’t mind hearing from the Buckeyes.

Michigan high school football is home to some really stellar talent. In fact, within the last 10 years, Michigan high school football as a whole has really taken a step up in the world. Whether it be competition, coaching or overall talent, Michigan has really increased their number of Division-1 type prospects in the recent recruiting cycles. For the Ohio State coaching staff, they’ve obviously taken notice. Recruiting Michigan native prospects pretty frequently since the beginning of Urban Meyer’s tenure, Michigan natives currently find themselves on the current OSU roster with guys such as Michael Jordan and Mike Weber.

Head to the opposite side of the state to West Michigan and you have one area that really deserves some attention from top level programs. In particular, Muskegon high school. Home of the winningest prep program in the state, the Muskegon Big Reds produce top level prospects year in and year out. With a head coach in Shane Fairfield running an incredible system, the Big Reds not only won their respective division state championship last year, but are well on their way to possibly repeating as back-to-back state champs. One of their key reasons: quarterback Cameron Martinez.

Martinez is literally “Mr. Do-it-all”. The best part of Cam’s attributes though, is that he may be one of the most humble kids in the game. A 6-foot, 180-pound speedster, Cameron is currently the 38th best athlete in the nation for 2020, and the 18th best player in a very talented state of Michigan for his cycle. A higher three-star, Cameron can easily back up his ranking with his play. In fact, don’t be surprised at all to see his stock increase toward the four-star mark as he continues to compete this season at a very high level as a high school junior. The sky's the limit for this young talent—and he’s hoping the Buckeye coaching staff takes notice.

Yesterday, Cameron took time out of his day to speak with Land-Grant Holy Landabout his current recruiting process.

LGHL: You’re a current Junior in high school, tell me about your accolades to this point.

Cameron: My freshman season, I helped lead my team to a state title for Muskegon Catholic Central where I played quarterback and safety. That season I earned all-conference, all-area, as a defensive player and honorable mention all-state as a QB. During the state championship game that season, I had 150 yards and a touchdown. My sophomore year I had 2,000-plus all-purpose yards and over 20 touchdowns. I was awarded first team all-state as a safety.

LGHL: Who are the schools who have already offered you? Of those do you have any favorites?

Cameron: Currently, I have offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Syracuse, Boston College, Northern Illinois, Central, Western, Alabama A&M, Toledo and Buffalo. Right now I don’t have a clear leader in my recruitment.

LGHL: Have you visited Ohio State before? If so, when?

Cameron: I haven’t technically visited, I have been there a few times though for camp. I actually attended Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp and was offered by Buffalo during an Ohio State camp where they had multiple staffs working.

LGHL: What sticks out to you about Ohio State? What are your favorite aspects of the school, team, and coaching staff?

Cameron: What sticks out to me about Ohio State is the culture around the program and the coaching staff. They work hard, they develop athletes for the next level, and they win. The coaches are great. They have a ton of experience, multiple head coaches on staff, and some young coaches that are great.

LGHL: Have you ever talked with Ohio State and or one of their coaches? If not, would you consider camping again this coming summer for Friday Night Lights or another camp they hold?

Cameron: I talked a ton with Coach Hartline the summer before my sophomore year at the camp where I received my offer from Buffalo, which was before he was the receivers position coach. I came back to Ohio State a month later for Friday Night Lights and talked a ton with former position coach Zach Smith. We exchanged information, but haven’t been in contact since.

OHIO STATE MAKES OFFER TO FLORIDA RUNNING BACK
The love between Florida running backs and Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford continues to grow. Alford and the Buckeyes have been hot on the trail of IMG Academy's Noah Cain and Trinity Christian's Marcus Crowley as of late.

This past weekend, they made an offer to Cocoa athlete Caziah Holmes, a four-star 2020 prospect who's considered the state's 32nd-best overall prospect in his class. Holmes confirmed to Lettermen Row that Alford made him the offer.
