Overall Thoughts on team/coaching situations/defense/offense/etc.

Head Coach
Let me first throw this out there...I love this site, don't take the bullshit that other sites take, no bashing, talking about firing etc...

Thus I make this post on this board instead of the other boards I frequent, because smart minds will read it, and take it for what it is and not turn it into a bashing fest...

I have talked to some people today, some saying get rid of Tress, some saying get rid of Heacock, some saying how bad Todd is, etc...

The two biggest complaints I have seen are Tress give up the offense and Heacock give up the defense...

Here is my thought on the situations...

First Tress's offense starts and ends with the QB and the RB...Yeah WR's, OL, etc. help out, but look at Tress and the years he had great offenses...

His best ones were with MoC in the backfield, Troy/Pittman combo, and Beanie in the backfield...

He struggled with Bellasari, Krenzel w/o MoC, Zwick, Boeckman w/o Beanie...

Basically what I am getting at the loss of Beanie killed the offense...There is no reason for Tress to give up the offense, we are w/o our best player, and a player that would make the biggest difference in terms of not having him on our team...Boom does a good job back there, but he doesn't strike fear into a defense in ways that he can bust the big play everytime, in ways that he wears them down, in terms of playaction passing...This allows teams to unleash the hounds on Boeckman, much like USC did...The Oline has not played great, but the basically the same o-line last year never had much problems...This year all of a sudden they suck? They got weak? They can't block? No...defenses are able to play different due to not having the fear of playaction and a RB that will take it to the house, which is the main thing Tress's offense is based on...

Thus the starting of TP which allows for teams not to unleash on the QB, knowing they will get gashed by the QB, they know that he is not a great passer yet, but if they let guys get behind them like on Saturday then he will gash them...Once he starts making reads better, we have Wells back, no one will even remember they wanted Tress gone as the offensive coordinator...

As for Heacock...He is doing all he can...We lack in the area of DT and S, which kills a defense, that is up the middle where it hurts the most...Not that they suck by any means, just that they are not making plays right now, and the DT struggle to get penetration, the safeties struggle to make plays in the running game...

We were also a little late to recruit the S/LB hybrids, as the big ten teams were not running the spread, and thus that hurt us against teams like Florida, Illinois...But guys like Moeller, Hines, are filling the role...USC has guys at safety that are able to do that, at 230 running 4.3...Those guys are hard to find...

It is not scheme...It is execution...We blitz, and don't get there, and we sit back and they pick us apart...

Gibson is growing into a guy that is going to get us lots of pressure off the edge...We have put guys like Heyward, Worthington, Rose inside to give us some speed to try and get penetration and get after the QB...

Anyway you look at it, the coaches have been adapting...They were a little slow to the spread and we got hurt a couple times, but we consistently have a great defense year in and year out...We can't go full time to a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 due to the fact there are still teams that run pro style offenses just like USC and LSU, but we need to have guys upfront that can get penetration and guys in the backfield that can come up and defend the run...

So basically all I am saying is we are fine...We have lost 4 games in the past 2 years and 4 games, some are falling into the trap that we cannot compete against the SEC and the big time programs...

Well lets look at us being in two games without our best playmaker (Teddy, Beanie), one game we just completely shot ourselves in the foot, playing in our opponenets back yard, one game we saw a player play the game of his live...

We are putting just as much talent to the league as other teams, we just have laid an egg in a couple games...This isn't a Cooper situation...Tress has proven in his time here that he can win a big game, Miami, Texas, Michigan, other big ten games, Kst, Notre Dame, etc...There was a time not long ago where Tress was considered one of the best big name coaches...

And one last thought, might have more to add later, but this is all for now...

For those that Booed Todd Boeckman, shame on you...The kid has poured his life the last 6 years into this university, greyshirting, paying his own way, waiting his time, and to boo him off the field for an incomplete pass, is something that I can just not find words to describe, other than those that did should be ashamed of themselves...

I agree with the w/o beanie our offensive was lacking and tresses play calling may have reflected that. I am fine with tress; i think that he is a great coach and a good play caller; i think he could use a little help on play calling; somtimes i think he forgets who is actually running the plays (the key players of the play, on run downs, screens, ect.) I have seen him call good plays, but with the wrong players it seems like. Anyone else see this?

As far as the defense and Heacock. I really dont like the coushins we are giving receivers on 3rd down. I was at the game; i was trying to view the whole defense and it seemed like the corners were on a straight line with the safteys some of the time; giving them 8-12 yard coushins; even on 3rd downs. I know we run a zone defense with cover 2 or whatever that scheme is called, i really would like to see a more aggressive defense on 3rd downs, and yea you made some good points about the DT's why are we still running a 4 man front all the time if our DT's arnt getting it done? why dont we go to a 3-4 and blitz more LB's or the freesaftey.

i just have this sense that we've actually taken a few steps back from last year; on nearly all aspects of the team. i am starting to think that last year was a horrific year for the big ten; im getting really worried about Penn state.

Agree with the cushions, giving such a cushion to prevent the quick strike/big play just leaves us open on the underneath routes and those kill us. I agree that we've regressed somewhat on both ends of the game and that is worrisome.

Our biggest problem is the dline. Absolutely no penetration. Missed tackles are also something we're usually not worried about, yet we've had alot of those as well. Finally, aggression. I think our scheme is way too passive. Our blitzes are ineffective and predictable. It's time for a pair of new eyes to look at things. I don't think Coach Heacock is as good of a coord. as he is a straight up coach.

Da Bucks

Some ramblings about the Buckeyes.

Special Teams so far D+

Offense so far C
Havent blocked well yet.

Defense so far B-
Poor tackling.

I saw where Troy said Ohio State was slow and that angered OSU.

Hmm maybe they are and maybe they arent, but they play slow.

But with all of that, GO BUCKS!
