DAYTON ? A cadre of fans from Maria Stein rooted hard for Cory Luebke as he pitched the second game for Fort Wayne Tuesday night against the Dayton Dragons.
They and the rest of the fans at Fifth Third Field gave the rookie left-hander an ovation when he was taken from the game with two outs in the sixth inning. Luebke, a former star at Marion Local High School and Ohio State, left with a 3-0 lead after allowing just four hits ? all singles ? and two walks. He struck out six.

Ex-Buckeye 'real deal,' Towers says
By Tom Krasovic
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 27, 2007

Athletes from Ohio State are more apt to become football or basketball standouts than impact performers in the major leagues.
Padres General Manager Kevin Towers sees a potential exception in Corey Luebke, the former Buckeyes pitcher chosen by scouting director Bill ?Chief? Gayton two months ago.

Luebke, performing at two levels below advanced Single-A, racked up 56 strikeouts against only seven walks in his initial 51 2/3 innings. Towers recently watched Luebke, a starter with low Single-A Fort Wayne, Ind., throw 5 2/3 scoreless innings against a Reds affiliate before a sold-out crowd in Dayton, Ohio.
?Luebke is the real deal,? Towers said. ?He has a very good body and delivery with three present major league pitches. Fastball was 90-93 (mph) with excellent command.?

Drafted 63rd overall in June, the left-hander could be in Double-A next year. ?He should move quick through the minors,? Towers said. ?He is very impressive.?

When Cory Luebke describes the start of the 2008 season, it doesn't sound pretty.

"I just got pounded," the 24-year-old left-hander said.

He found a flaw in his mechanics and began to simplify his delivery. It took time, but he figured out that his results wouldn't improve until he found a way to locate his fastball.

Luebke carried the lessons he learned into this season and is growing into the starter the Padres expected when they selected the Ohio State product with the 63rd overall pick in the 2007 Draft.

On Sunday, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound southpaw struggled with his off-speed pitches but located his fastball so well that he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the Lake Elsinore Storm's 6-0 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

"I was getting in on guys' hands pretty good today, just making good pitches with my fastball, not getting lazy with it, pounding the zone," Luebke said.

Nine starts into the season, he is 5-2 with a 3.04 ERA. He has won his last three outings and four of five.

Because of his simplified delivery, he is able to make adjustments after each pitch, and success has followed.

"Instead of having an inning where my fastball was flying all over the place and I really didn't know what was going on, I'm able to make adjustments pitch-by-pitch now," he said.

Last weekend's series between Lake Elsinore and Rancho Cucamonga featured two back-to-back outstanding pitching performances.

Cory Luebke earned Player of the Week honors for May 18 to 24, winning two games for the Storm during the week. The left-hander from Ohio State allowed one run in a seven-inning stint against Lancaster and followed it up Sunday by allowing only one hit and two walks in eight innings against the Quakes. Luebke has a 5-2 record and 3.04 earned run average. He has four times as many strikeouts (48) as walks (12).

Luebke Throws Complete Game as 66ers Drop Opener
June 6, 2009 - California League (CalL) Inland Empire 66ers

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Cory Luebke three a complete game while setting a season-high with 10 strikeouts to lead the Storm past the 66ers, 6-1, in the series opener Friday night at The Diamond. The lefthander lost the shutout bid on Steve Caseres' sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

Leubke, who entered with the California League's second lowest ERA, scattered five hits and walked one in his first professional complete game. He had a strikeout in eight of the nine innings and sat down eight batters in a row before Trayvon Robinson led off the ninth with a double to left. After Robinson scored on Caseres' fly out, Luebke (6-2) ended the night in emphatic fashion, striking out Elian Herrera to end the ballgame.

Prospect Cory Luebke is back on track
By Bill Center, Union-Tribune Staff Writer
June 20, 2009

SAN DIEGO ? Just about a year ago at this time, Cory Luebke was going backwards ? moving from high Single-A Lake Elsinore to low Single-A Fort Wayne to work on a flaw in his delivery.

Come Tuesday night, the 24-year-old Luebke will be the California League's starting pitcher in the California-Carolina Leagues All-Star Game to be played at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.

What a difference a year has made to the fortunes of the 6-foot-4, Ohio State product drafted 63rd overall in 2007.
And what is the difference?

?My delivery,? says the left-handed Luebke, who is 7-2 this season with a California League-leading 2.48 ERA. ?Toward the end of my time with Lake Elsinore last season, I had some flaws with my posture.
?We cleaned up my delivery at Fort Wayne and I worked on it over the winter.?

You don't often hear pitchers refer to ?posture? as a problem.
?I was tilting my body and not getting a good angle consistently on my pitches,? explained Luebke. ?Repeating my delivery with consistency was something I struggled with in college, but I had enough stuff to get away with it.

?It wasn't working in pro ball.?
Early last season, Luebke was 3-6 with a 6.84 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) with Lake Elsinore. He finished with a 3-3 record and 2.89 ERA in 10 starts for Fort Wayne.

Luebke, who worked a shortened start Saturday night so he could start the All-Star Game on two days rest, is one of five Lake Elsinore players who will be representing the California League in their home ballpark.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Buckeye Cory Luebke took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in an 8-0 victory over Canada in the second round of the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

The lefthander from Coldwater, Ohio struck out 10 batters and gave up just the one single in 7.2 innings. His one-hitter tied the USA Baseball World Cup record for least hits allowed in a game.

It was Luebke's first game for the U.S. World Cup team as he is taking a break from pitching for the San Antonio Missions, the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

Cory Luebke(LHP, 24): Some consider the 6-foot-4 Ohio State product to be the best bet to make the majors and perform among the Padres? pitching prospects. He is very polished with a 91-93 mph fastball and solid slider and change. After pitching for Lake Elsinore and San Antonio last year (11-4 combined with a 2.78 combined ERA), Luebke played for Team USA. He will probably start the season with Triple-A Portland and be available to the Padres in the summer.

PADRES: Luebke returns to the prospect radar

A bounceback 2009 season for Padres pitching prospect Cory Luebke included an appearance in the California League all-star game in Lake Elsinore. (NCT file photo) .

..PEORIA, Ariz. -- Cory Luebke has his signing bonus as a former high draft pick stashed safely away. He has a gold medal from Team USA's win in the 2009 World Baseball Cup, in which he starred in wins over Canada and Cuba.

Now all that's missing from his resume is a spot in the big leagues. And that may be coming sooner rather than later.

The Padres selected Luebke with the 63rd pick of the 2007 draft after a standout career at Ohio State. He had a great first season, then things fell apart in 2008 at Lake Elsinore. In 17 appearances for the Storm, he was 3-6 with a 6.84 ERA.

"I had a hiccup two years ago," Luebke said. "But I was able to learn from it. I changed my delivery. Worked hard to get better, and it paid off."

He went back to Lake Elsinore last season and was 8-2 with a 2.34 ERA. That earned him a promotion to Double-A San Antonio, putting him back on the Padres' radar.

"I like this kid's arm," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Being in camp with us has been a good experience for him. He's made an impression. He's pushing guys.

"I like his velocity in the low 90s. And he has a good changeup, although he's throwing it a bit hard still."

Baseball America lists Luebke as the Padres' sixth-best prospect. According to the publication, an unwillingness to pitch inside to right-handed hitters led to his poor season at Lake Elsinore in 2008.

And Luebke doesn't disagree.

"The biggest thing I'm working on is running my fastball down and away to right-handed hitters," Luebke said. "Last year, I worked on getting the ball in on right-handers. I need to be able to command both sides of the plate to pitch in the big leagues. I realize that now. And I need to use my changeup more often.

"I'm still a work in progress."

Former Emeralds left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke (2007) part of most recent spring training roster move.

PEORIA, AZ -The San Diego Padres recently announced more spring training roster moves. They have optioned three players to Triple-A Portland and reassigned one--former Emeralds left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke--to minor league camp.
Luebke played for the Emeralds during the 2007 season, appearing in eight games, including three starts. He came out on top with a 3-0 record and 1.46 ERA, striking out 26 and only walking two. He moved on to play for both the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Low-A) and the Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), completing his 2007 season with appearances in three Storm playoff games.

He spent the 2008 season splitting time between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore. In 2009 he started with the Storm and was named a California League All-Star before being promoted to the San Antonio Missions (Double-A).

Luebke was selected in the supplemental first round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Padres; he was picked 63rd overall.

Luebke has been impressive in 2 starts with San Diego.

Luebke wins first as Padres pad West lead

Luebke (1-0), in his second Major League start, allowed two hits over six shutout innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. His reward, manager Bud Black said, is that he will get at least one more start moving forward.

Going back to Luebke's first start against the Rockies -- in which he allowed two two-run home runs -- he has now retired 27 of the last 30 Major League hitters he's faced.

Padres pitcher Cory Luebke throws a pitch in a game against the Colorado rockies on Sept. 3.

As the San Diego Padres prepared for their final push for the playoffs, they enlisted the help of a former Ohio State Buckeye for depth in their rotation and bullpen down the stretch run.

On Sept. 1, the Padres promoted pitcher Cory Luebke, from Triple-A Portland, and two days later he made his major league career debut, earning his first career loss after pitching five innings and giving up four runs to the Colorado Rockies. The four runs earned on Luebke came by way of a pair of two-run home runs from MLB All-Stars Jason Giambi and Troy Tulowitzki.

"Tulowitzki was just on a tear at the time. I've never seen a guy hit the ball like that," Luebke said. "Giambi's been getting paid a long time to hit balls out of the park."

Luebke redeemed himself in his second start, as he pitched six scoreless innings and yielded only two hits as he picked up a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I really don't know if I pitched all that better in my second start than in my first," Luebke said. "Just two pitches can change the way an entire start goes."

Dodgers manager Joe Torre was impressed.

"He showed a lot of composure," Torre told the media following Luebke's second start. "I thought he threw a lot of strikes, which is not easy to do this time of the year."
