Nice Day for Thoma: Backup punter Jon Thoma had a very steady day punting the football. Thoma didn't hit any huge bombs, but also had no shanks and consistently got off adequate punts. He appears to be more more confident, more consistent and an improved punter in 2007.

Thoma is also Pretorius' holder, and with Pretorius winning the place kicking job, Thoma will now be the first team holder, taking the job done by A. J. Trapasso last season. Trapasso holds only for Pettry and Thoma for Pretorius. Pretorius could not stop raving about the job Thoma does as a holder, a position Thoma has also improved at drastically.

"Jon Thoma is doing a phenomenal job," said Pretorius.

"He's my holder and he's backup punter. If he could get a scholarship just as a holder I think the guy should because he makes me. He gives me so much confidence in terms of his holds."

"It's all repetition," said Thoma.

"My first kick scrimmage I was holding for Josh Huston's team and it was horrible. I was no good at all. As a specialist we don't do much. We punt, we hold. So with repetition comes consistency," Thoma said.

Congrats to Jon Thoma, who has also been granted a scholarship, per the official press release for Minnesota. As far as eligibility, Jon is a redshirt sophomore.

There's nothing sneaky about Jon Thoma. He just likes the fact that he has done his job so well this season that few Ohio State fans know his name, much less know how to pronounce it (it's toe-mah, like "Toga! Toga!"). As the holder for place-kicker Ryan Pretorius, Thoma performs a vital but often unappreciated role which isn't noticed unless something goes wrong. Thoma, a junior, played five sports at Aquinas High School in Louisville, Ohio, outside Canton, before walking on as a punter/kicker at OSU. That brought up some questions:
Q: Back in, say, the sixth grade, were you a do-it-all football player?
A: I didn't play football back then. I played football one year in eighth grade, and one year as a senior.
Q: Then when you were 8 years old, what was your athletic dream?

Nobody really is saying much about him for the upcoming season, but i'm very interested to see how it goes with him. We all know Tressel knows the importance of great special teams. The obvious questions are about the punting, but also with Trapasso gone, Petry will need a new holder, which I would assume would be Thoma. Things should work well there, but you always like to have the same holder/kicker combo if you can, just makes things smoother...they get a connection. But we know Thoma is a fine holder. I think Thoma needs a beard. That would obviously help him.

THOMA GETS A CHANCE

St. Thomas Aquinas graduate Jon Thoma, originally a walk-on at Ohio State, has bided his time and will get a shot to be the Buckeyes punter this fall. Thoma was the holder the last two years and earned a scholarship last year.

Thoma will compete with redshirt freshman Ben Buchanan for the job.

?Jonathan Thoma has the most experience, but Buchanan will have a chance to compete,? Head Coach Jim Tressel said.

Tressel moved the team?s kicking scrimmage to earlier in spring practice (next weekend) because he wanted to put pressure on new kickers sooner and have more time to evaluate them throughout spring.

I have not seen either of them this Spring with the exception of seeing Thoma working out one day on his own with some guys (Pettrey and LS McQuaide). Pettrey has a MONSTER leg! I can not foresee anything that will keep Thoma from winning the job. His grasp of the Aussie style "pooch punt" impressed me the most! I look for Thoma to grab the Bull by the Horns and run with it!

Your post is a bit confusing. Are you suggesting that I came across as saying that Thoma is just a "pooch punter" and if he gets the job that's what he's going to do? Are you talking about the "aussie style" of pooch punts or pooch punts in general? Not getting what you're asking.

Thoma will use the "aussie style" like AJ did when it's time to pooch the ball inside the 20 otherwise it's punt away (hang and distance).

[sarcasm] Does it even matter? I mean, Tressel doesn't even care about special teams, let alone the kicking game, does he? To listen to you guys on here, you'd think it was the most important play in the game or something....[/sarcasm]
