P Zach Farmer (R.I.P.)

Former Redstreaks, Ohio State baseball player Zach Farmer honored with monument at Piketon

PIKETON – For anyone who knew former Piketon and Ohio State baseball player Zach Farmer, they described him as a fierce competitor when he was on the mound. Off the mound, however, was another story.

“Zach had the really fortunate ability to be fun-loving and to be a nasty competitor, which is a combination that is really critical to be a great baseball player because it’s a tough game,” said Ohio State head baseball coach Greg Beals. “For us we have three-game series, so you pitch one day and you sit and watch two games. So, you’re watching two-thirds of the time so that fun-loving helped him through that but when it came time to compete he was really tough.”

Piketon baseball honored Farmer, who passed away in 2015 after battling leukemia, as they unveiled a monument at their baseball field on Saturday before opening their season against Meigs.

There’s just no words for it, just no words right now for this,” Larry said.

Farmer had a legendary career for the Redstreaks. He was first team All-Ohio three times, honorable mention All-Ohio once, a three-time All-American, was third in Ohio High School Athletic Association history in overall record as it sat at 36-7, was second in OHSAA history in career strikeouts with 599, No. 10 in OHSAA history in ERA with a 0.84 career ERA, and he was No. 22 in career batting average at the plate, hitting .505.

Professional teams pursued Farmer and he played fall baseball on a scout team for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he ultimately committed to play baseball at Ohio State.

Farmer had 10 appearances for the Buckeyes as a freshman in 2014 before first being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in April 2014. He went 6-4 with a 3.28 ERA in those 10 appearances that included nine starts and 34 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched.

After a successful treatment, Farmer went into remission on June 6, 2014 before announcing that the disease returned in July of 2015. He later passed away on Aug. 4, 2015.
