Peach Bowl: #1 Georgia vs #4 tOSU, Sat 12/31 8 ET on ESPN

There was also a TD by Charles White in the Rose Bowl against Michigan. White fumbled at the one yard line as he was leaping over the defense. He ended up in the end zone without the ball and USC was awarded a TD. This was before replay however the replay on TV clearly showed the error.
Also led to Woody and BO combining forces to insist that Pac 8 officials would not be used in future Rose Bowls.

Some of us on here recall the phantom TD scored by USCs White in the Rose Bowl before replay. Was that the whole reason the Buckeyes lost, no but to disregard the impact of it is, well I digress….
Still the most painful groin kick in my Buckeye fandom, followed closely by scUM 1996 and UGa 2022; I imagine that the 1975 Rose Bowl (a late one-point loss to Southern Cal) was similar but that was before my time.

By letter of law, Mitch Rossi committed a penalty on the 4th and 1 play he was called for illegal motion.

I watched at least 13 illegal motions in NFL today where guys were moving forward prior to snap.

That was a pretty soft call you don’t see much. Again, he was moving forward prior to snap…..but football at both college and NFL level has really let it slide when guys are moving a bit forward.

We made mistakes, including that one, but we also had horrible luck…

So you didn't question his toughness once or his ability to be super man when the team needs him?
I never “questioned his desire to win”, which was what you said. I never posted anything that would have me needing to “apologize” to him after he performed well above what many expected of him.

Notice how I used ‘many’ instead of ‘all’. It was your use of ‘all’ that I objected to; it’s a pet peeve of mine when somebody uses phrasing that includes everybody when I don’t consider that I should be included.

And of course, even with his outstanding performance, I wish he would have been able to do something to generate more points in the fourth quarter, despite the team missing the preseason Biletnikoff favorite, another guy who was the Buckeyes first unanimous All-American WR, the starting TE, and the top three RBs.

Of course not everyone questioned CJ but okay "most" have questioned something about him. I knew he was talented for example but I questioned his desire to leave it on the field. For that I'm included in my apology.

Oddly enough, the 1975 Rose Bowl was not before my time, I was at that game, near the goal line and close to the field, two rows in front of the USC band. Close enough to have to force myself not to turn around and jam the trombone constantly playing ‘Fight On’ in my ear back into the guy’s face. And the 1976 Rose Bowl loss to UCLA was more painful, but I digress.

In the third quarter of the 1975 Rose Bowl, with the Buckeyes up 7-3, Neal Colzie made a pick and ran it back inside the ten, then spiked the ball after he was forced out of bounds a few yards from where I was jumping up and down. He spiked it excitedly, after making a huge play, not in anybody’s face or to show off for the cameras. He got flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty, which made it first and goal from the 24 (these days it would be 1st and ten after a rule change, let alone that it probably wouldn’t draw a flag these days). The Buckeyes didn’t score on that possession, and another late red zone FG allowed USC to be within striking distance so that a bomb with just over 2 minutes left to J.K. McKay (head coach’s son), followed by a diving 2-point conversion catch by Shelton Diggs allowed USC to prevail 18-17. At the end, a 62-yard FG attempt by Tom Skladany fell short. Later that day, an Orange Bowl loss by UPI #1 Bama (to #8 Notre Dame) gave USC the Coaches #1 ranking, which would have gone to the Buckeyes, who were #2 in the Coaches Poll going in.

But I’m not bitter about missing out on witnessing tOSU win a Natty. Here’s a NY Times article I found about the spike.

In the Rose Bowl, an Ohio State safetyman, Neal Colzie, intercepted a Southern California pass when Ohio State was threatening to pull far ahead. Colzie ran the ball back inside the 10‐yard line, went out of bounds, then spiked the ball. For that act, the Buckeyes were set back to the Southern California 24, and, more to the point, had to score a touchdown for a first down. This put Ohio State in a bad position, the results of the interception were nullified, and Southern California went on from there.

I was talking to my cousin who works in the UGA Athletic Department(and was actually the Asst AD for sometime), and in his words "I'm worried about our defense, not consistent enough in the secondary. And the staff is seriously worried about Stroud and WRs". I kept saying that they demolished LSU in the SECCG, and dominated most teams with their defense. And he kept saying, they have holes in the defense backfield that can be exploited, and their offense isn't balanced enough. But he didn't go far enough to pick OSU to upset UGA. Still said UGA would win by same margin as scUM if the OSU coaches didn't learn their lesson. Which he believes they won't, and that will be their undoing. TIFWIW, but just passing on some info from inside the UGA athletic department

My cousin hit the nail on head. He was right to be worried about UGA's DBs, they looked as bad as OSU's. But it did seem like Day learned from his play calling against scUM to keep OSU in the game

This is what he sent me after the game too :

I thought the key to the end of the game was when OSU got barely into FG range, then took their foot off the gas. You want to turn that FG into a chip shot.

They did try, and failed ... this is what happens when your best player leaves the game. MHJr was not just a mismatch himself, he also created mismatch for others. On the scoring drive before halftime, X was covered by a linebacker. On the failed FG drive, X was covered by Ringo. Honestly it was a miracle that we even managed to be in field goal range to begin with.

But it was a bigger tragedy that we found ourselves relying on a depleted skill corps to win the game at the end, after leading by double digits midway into the 4Q. 2 of the 5 were former walk-ons. 1 hadn't seen time since what, the spring game?

To me, this game was lost when TTUN choked against TCU (... after we choked against TTUN). That missed FG was just a message from the Football Gods, "There will be no magical ending in a season when you don't handle business against your rival."

Who would you peg as the best? I don't think there's a dominant D this year

That's a good question. Probably the most consistent to run fits and zone rotations would be Iowa. They'd rather easily be a 10 win team with any sort of offensive support.

Honorable mention to NC State. Back to front, their secondary and linebackers get it done week in and out. They gave up 30 points only once on the entire season. Which was largely in part from their offense giving I'll timed turnovers back to Clemson.
