BN $ - January Visit For Country?s No. 1 Prospect

11/10

By BK...his coach says the list is down to five (Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, Florida State and Ohio State)...will likely take all five visits and plans to visit OSU in January.

Joe6809;1808843; said:
Well that's terrible news [the January official visit]. I think our hopes for a coup were riding on him being blown away by the game day environment in the Shoe. Without us getting the chance to make use of that ace in the hole, I think our chances just flew out the window.

Cincinnatibuck;1808886; said:
I'll have to disagree with you otherwise we wouldn't bother inviting kids to games. I would think the coaches like having these recruits experience up close the game day atmosphere at OSU. There are other reasons why kids are drawn to schools like Miami and USC that in their eyes trumps game atmosphere at those schools. There have been many a recruit that have stated they have been blown away by the game day atmosphere at OSU that have signed with OSU and don't regret that decision. I'm not saying that it's the sole reason they signed, but for some it plays a part.

BigJim;1808995; said:
I say we follow the "trust the coaches" mantra here. There's a reason they bring in these huge groups of recruits for the big games. Coaches want to show off the atmosphere.

Cincinnatibuck;1809002; said:
I don't know every school that the players you listed had the chance to visit to experience the atmosphere. A quick search says Phillips visited Syracuse and Indiana. For all I know those two schools could of been the biggest programs he's ever visited, so I'm not as quick to say it was just "recruit speak" when he says he was blown away by the atmosphere at Indiana. Every kid doesn't get to experience anything like a OSU game day.

Jeff Hueurman comes to mind as a recruit who really enjoyed the spring game and that helped in his very fast commitment.

Back to Clowney.

Joe6809;1809078; said:
LJB, don't twist my words. I'm not saying kids make decisions solely based on game day atmosphere, but I am saying that it's a factor. And I think everyone is in agreement that Clowney is an uphill battle, as all reports indicate this is a South Carolina - Alabama battle. I used the word coup for a reason, not just for pretty writing. We really need to pull out all the stops if we're going to get this kid to sign his name for us in February, which in my mind includes having him here for a game. I'm not saying game day is bigger than coaches, facilities, education, etc, but I absolutely am saying that missing out on one of those factors entirely (ie, not having him here for a game) is going to diminish from our hopes of pulling him away from the south.

Again, to put it in plain english: Letting him meet coaches, tour facilities, meet with advisors, and go to a game is BETTER than letting him meet coaches, tour facilities, meet with advisors, and not see a game.
Good thing that Mr. Clowney didn't see that bush league performance from our "fans". Hell of a game day atmosphere, way to go people!

BUt that's just it, you cannot boo without dumping on the players. Their failures are why they were booing.

when they executed properly with the exact same style of plays, the malcontents were squealing with delight as they ran all over psu.

Before the half they called two runs and threw a dumpoff to the rb. When boom made the plays, they were happy. When saine didnt , they swore and boo angrily at tressel for holding them

Besides that, they are a family. You cant insult their leader.

but most of all, it is incredibly selfish, ignorant and hateful. It turns a home field advantage into a hostile bunch of hecklers.
Pretty much says it all.

I don't know why you guys are getting on the fans for booing just at halftime. the whole second half they booed poor dan herron every time he touched the ball.

Seriously! They boo'd poor Josh Houston almost every time he took the field. These "fans" have something up their collective bums.

Pretty much says it all.

I think the booing in all honesty was directed twoards JT right or wrong...his clock management is not his strong-suit and it reared it's head again at the end of the half.

Herbstreit isn't on top of the game enough to recognize the play sequence that set the fans off...

The second down run essentially killed any chance of putting together a drive to score points at the half. Then they ask Terrelle Proyor to throw into a deep zone on thrid and long, and nothing is there becuase its third and forever so he dumps it down and the fans go off.

It wasn't Terrelle's decision making that set the crowd off as Herbstreit mistakenly stated. It was the sequence of plays in a two minute drill and the overall effort in the first half by the defense.

The sounds of boo birds heard in Horse Shoe

COLUMBUS Really? Dane Sanzenbacher, you're a senior. You've lost four conference games in four years. Have you ever heard boos in the Horseshoe?

"I don?t think so," the receiver from Toledo said.

It didn't bother you?

"Well? I guess it's a situation where we understand how obsessed our fans are for Ohio State football," he said. "They live and die with us. Running off, I guess I was thinking I?d want to boo us too. So, um, is that politically correct enough?"

Sanzenbacher went on to say that it was the Buckeyes, not the fans, who had to make something happen. And he was part of that with a touchdown catch on one of the more bizarre plays of the season.

"One catch and it wasn't thrown to me," he said, laughing.

Leading by 17-14, Pryor let fly with a deep, towering, fair-catch of a pass intended for DeVier Posey, who just happened to be covered by two Penn State defenders. It was neither a good decision nor a good throw. But the ball bounced off Posey or one or both of his defenders and caromed right into Sanzenbacher?s hands just outside the end zone for a 58-yard scoring play and a 24-14 lead.

Boo Birds should have stuck around for the second half...

My Brother-in-law turned off his recorder after the first half in disgust. Tonight he called me to ask for the second half that he didn't get recorded. He is a big fan and I suspect that the impending doom from the first half had its mood altering effects. I don't understand it because I have been recording games since Dane was a Frosh. Haven't missed a single game even the ones we lost (which can be counted on one hand). In ten seasons they are 63 and 7 at home. Picky and spoiled... Buckeye fans don't know how good they have it.

And if the running back busts off a 25-yard run, the play call is still inexcusable, right?

You can't boo one (the play calling) without booing the other (the team). And as I said before, the play callers are part of the team, so when you boo them, you boo the team. That's what's inexcusable.

Perhaps using the word ''inexcusable'' is a little much, but I stand by my statement that it's stupid to call running plays when we were in fairly good position to try to score at the end of the half. And yes, even if Boom or Zoom had gone 25 yards, the play call would have been dumb in my mind, but the execution would have been outstanding, obviously.

I'd also say that while I wholeheartedly agree that booing ones own team is disgusting, there is a difference between booing the team and booing the play calling.

No there isn't. And how can you tell who or what was being booed, anyway? People were booing the performance, which included playcalling and execution, players and coaches. It's all one and the same thing, because there is absolutely no way to direct your booing at anything in particular.

And when the "fans" were booing as the team headed to the locker room at the end of the first half, just what playcall was being booed then?

that was the play call. we had the ball with over a minute and we decided the next play that needed to be run was us running in to the locker room.

Oh, and one more thing....

Let's assume that you are correct, and that every single one of the thousands of booing fans was booing the playcalling only, and not the players. And let's also assume that every single one of the players was savvy enough to realize this distinction. That is a good thing how?

If I'm a player, I'm thinking one of two things:

"I really respect Coach Tressel and his staff, and I'm prepared to go to war for them. And these so-called fans are booing them and their playcalling? What a bunch of a-holes...."

"Boy, these fans must think that Coach Tressel and his staff are real dumbasses. Maybe they're right. Maybe I should've gone to Southern Cal instead...."

So go ahead, boo away ... but don't ever talk about being the greatest fans in the world, or try to convince me that the game day atmosphere in The Shoe is so awesome that recruits will be blown away by it.

In what world is OSU's own 20 'in fairly good position' to score?

Sorry, the whole stadium would have squealed with delight like the fickle fans we all are. Not a soul would have complained about a dumpoff pass to Saine if he had picked up the first down like Boom did on 3rd down on the next drive.

No, there's not. Tressel IS the team. You cannot insult a team's leader, playcaller and father figure without insulting the whole team, particularly because the disapproval is directly linked to the players' failures on the field.

Playcalling was not the reason they had three points, yet short-sighted folks were screaming profanities at tressel for holding back the offense.

Playcalling is not why Terrelle couldn't see Dane sitting wide open 7 yds in front of him (with no defender within 5 yds in any direction) on third down.

Playcalling is not why they had bad penalties that stalled drives.

Tressel's playcalling can often be controversial and unpopular, but you cannot separate the playcalling from the players.

Coach Jim Tressel thundered in the halftime locker room, a startling and rare occurrence, and his players responded with lightning bolts - 35 unanswered points that flipped a disaster around to a runaway, 38-14.
"Well, the halftime locker room was not a fun place," Tressel said, "but it was not a place that looked like there was any quit in anybody. And our guys went out in the second half and took over."
Said linebacker Brian Rolle, "We didn't talk about the boos. Boos let you know what kind of fans you have."
Thanks to plays like that, OSU is still there. The boos were long gone.
"We always say we're playing for each other," center Michael Brewster said. "It doesn't matter what anybody says or whoever boos, it's these guys in the locker room that are staying here all year round, busting their butts, out there fighting every play.
"And sometimes stuff doesn't go right, but we're just going to keep plugging away and something good will happen, and it did."

Glad to say the booing wasn't coming from our section, although I definitely heard them. I was actually pretty confident heading in at halftime after the big stop, it felt like a bit of a momentum swing. I felt content in the fact that we could see a big turnaround in the second half, which turned out to be pretty amazing. Great night to be in the Shoe, regardless of the boobirds.

We did have a few people surrounding us that I'd feel wrong to label as fans. Always going to have some bad apples... or in some cases lots of bad apples.
