Perry Eliano (Official Thread)

When looking at his record, it looks questionable. His top 5 recruits of all time are one 4* and four 3*s. His 247 recruiting ranking is #112.

There is no question when he's recruiting for OSU, he'll get in more doors and with players that are in higher demand. Unfortunately, Knowles has a terrible track record as a recruiter. I don't know Tim Salem's track record, but it's been 10 years since he recruited.

Coombs and Washington were good to great recruiters. The defensive recruiting suffered from the Grinch experiment, and Hafley leaving a few years ago.

If Salem, Knowles and Eliano don't significantly up their game, the Buckeye defense may not have the talent we are accustomed to seeing in the past.

I think Day may be gambling his job on these three hires.

Who did Coombs recruit before he came to OSU. Was it 4 & 5 stars? How about Al Washington before he went to TTUN?

You’re comparing the recruiting of a coach who has been at G5 schools to coaches coaching at places with two of the most recognizable and prestigious logos.

Also…it’s Tim Watson. I’m not sure who the hell “Salem” is.

Bad take.
These coaches recruited the best they could get at the schools they were at. And what's most important is results. Eliano turned a former 3star into a Thorpe winner, and another 3 star into an All American, thats more than what Coombs has done in a long time!. Knowles had a better defense than either of our DCs could muster this year, and he did it with mostly 3stars.
When Hafley got to OSU he hadn't been in the CFB game for very long, he was hired from the NFL, just like Tim WALTON.

Eliano coached at nmsu and maybe utep before UC. Imo his past there is nearly irrelevant.

Knowles is here to lock down a great defensive scheme. Doesn't need to be a primary recruit. He's already out on the trail though. And if you mean Walton, I guess we'll have to wait and see. But he can sell a ton of nfl experience to recruits.

Yes sorry I meant Walton.

If these guys have the personality to connect with HS coaches, mom and dad and the recruits themselves, all it will take is the desire and commitment to be a great recruiter. Day has it, so does Hartline, Coombs and Washington too and Urban did as well.

If Knowles doesn't recruit, unless Eliano and Walton become elite recruiters, who on defense will?

Strange how people who rarely if ever post come out of the woodwork to bash a coaching hire. Maybe Coach Day and Gene Smith should have hired THEM.

I post when I have something to say that I think adds to the discussion.

Take a look at how many of my posts before this set of hires were critical. Look up how many times in 16 years I've even had an opinion on a coaching hire and posted it.

I hear your issue with the hires, and ob the surface it makes a little sense. But a lot of your concern has been answered in other threads.
A lot of coaches coming from the NFL offer a different aspect, as they can provide insight on the next level and what it takes. Like I said, Hafley was primarily an NFL coach before coming to OSU. Mike McDonald was primarily an NFL coach before going to scUM this season. Doug Marrone just led an OL to the NC with Bama after being in the NFL for years, and same with Bill O'Brien. Ryan Day was plucked from the NFL, etc etc
And I honestly could care less if Knowles can recruit well, if he can get the defense to tackle effectively and generate a good scheme and not be afraid to change on the fly. For the positivity that you spoke about Coombs, he did none of those things, and cost us a CFP appearance.

If Eliano can turn 2 former 3stars into the best CB tandem in CFB, imagine what he can do with the former 4 and 5stars on our roster like: Brown, Burke, Hancock, Johnson, Martinez, Cavazos, Brown and Turner

We'll just have to see. Day made the mistake of putting recruiting first and it added to the mess. They're less known than others, but I know Day puts an emphasis on getting the best players that fit. If they don't do that, they'll be finding another job.

Well, Meyer put recruiting first as well. I think Day, got caught sleeping at the wheel on the defense, and recruiting could have been better.

I think on paper, when Coombs took the DC job, it seemed like a can't miss. Proven recruiter and success as a position coach.

I think recruiting needs to be important. Look at TSUN, even if you bring in a better coach the talent level will get exposed.

I am actually excited about the new coaching hires. I think they bring a fresh look, but they must recruit at a high level. I am sure they know the expectations.
