PF Evan Ravenel (Fukushima - Japan)

given evan's size, sully looks to have a similar body type to bang against in practice.

also...

i expect that new assistant coach dave dickerson had much to do with ravenel's choice. while at tulane, dickerson recruited ravenel.

Two years of college ball under his belt would be useful to help new guys in practice.

One might think that would would be the role of Sarikopoulos and Kecman. But they saw viertually zero PT last year while Ravenel has logged 10+ minutes each of the past two seasons.

Matta does seem to recruit players from the extremes of the spectrum.

It could be that since he's been bitten by transfers he wants to get someone who will be happy to ride the bench and help out in practice who may never see playing time or might see playing time as a senior.

different skill sets work better on different style teams... I trust Matta... Ravenel's style must fit us (and the Big 10) better than it fit BC and the ACC.. or Ravenel didn't think he'd fit in with the style of the new BC coach.. he's sure not the only one that transferred

Matta seems to do this once every year or two. He adds a practice body for the people to bang against and hopes by the time they become seniors that they can contribute to the team playing minutes.
Yeah, I think you're right. But for this kid, I think the hope is that he will be able to step in and actually play when he becomes eligible in '11-12 because Jared is likely 1 & done IMO. This seems to me to be similar to when they added Big Z with BJM being a 1 & done.

As an aside, are we sure he won't be eligible next year? If he left on his own free will, then no, but maybe he was forced out by the new coach. I don't know, I'm just asking. If he was forced out, then he would be eligible next year like the UK transfers from last year.

He asked and was granted his release by BC. Don't believe he will be eligible next year.

6-8 transfer adds size to Ohio State?s roster

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Evan Turner?s entry in the NBA draft opened a basketball scholarship at Ohio State. Evan Ravenel?s transfer filled it.

Ravenel was not on coach Thad Matta?s radar when Ravenel was recruited in high school. But that changed when Matta added assistant Dave Dickerson to his coaching staff this spring.

Ravenel, who played the past two seasons at Boston College, was recruited by Tulane when Dickerson was the coach there. With Ohio State in the market for more size inside, the 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward visited the campus with his father the past two days and said he accepted a scholarship offer before returning home to Tampa, Fla., yesterday.

?I wanted to play for somebody who recruited me (originally) and I felt comfortable with,? Ravenel said. ?I was pretty close to signing with coach Dickerson at Tulane, but it wasn?t the right time to play for them.?

Dickerson took over at Tulane, in New Orleans, about six months before Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. He spent five seasons trying to succeed in its aftermath before resigning after this past season.

In 25 games at Boston College last season, Ravenel averaged 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds in 10.5 minutes off the bench.

He asked for and received his scholarship release after coach Al Skinner was replaced by Steve Donahue of Cornell.

Ravenel will sit out next season as a transfer and be a fourth-year junior in 2011-12.

His father, Eugene, said Ohio State was the only school his son visited. Evan said he also considered South Florida and James Madison.

?It?s a real tight family. Everybody looks out for each other,? Evan Ravenel said. ?Coach Matta is a different type of coach. I?ve never seen a coach so involved with his players. They work hard for him. I really like that.?

Restocking the Buckeyes interior is one of Matta?s recruiting objectives this summer. The only inside players projected to be on the roster after next season are 7-foot Zisis Sarikopoulos, who will be a senior in 2011-12, and 6-8 Jared Sullinger, who will be a sophomore.

?It?s a good situation for him,? Eugene Ravenel said.

Never seen the guy play, but why is Matta offering a guy that average 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds for BC?
See the post right below your original post and you might understand. I think you might remember a player by the name of Kyle Madsen who after a few years of practice he played some very valuable minutes his last year and, in addition to basketball, he is an extremely good student.

I really wouldn't look at the "averages", if you look at his game by game statistics, he was somewhat productive in games he had minutes in. It seems he started off the season playing some minutes and then became real spotty between November and Feb. But, down the ACC stretch you see a lot more production and minutes. He went 8/6 against FSU and then 8/4 in a win against UNC... both teams with great size. I also wouldn't compare him to Z or NK, both which have had their own adjustments to make from the Euro game.

The way I see it, he adds good tough size in the paint... someone that can bang. If for some reason Sully bounces after one season, this becomes even more important. While Matta can recruit the best, this means one and dones come with the teritory. Evan is someone that can come in that is battle tested in ACC ball, and can be an impact role player. I like the scholarship, and think we will be pleasently surprised with Evan's production.

I don't know if they are very similar players or not, but it's worth noting that Dallas averaged 4 and 3 in his sophmore season while playing twice as many minutes as Evan. Ravenel will be here for 3 years, and by the time he leaves I'm sure he'll be developed enough to offer some productive minutes. :osu:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Thad Matta, head coach of the Ohio State men's basketball team, announced the addition of Evan Ravenel to the roster for the 2010-11 season. A rising junior, Ravenel played two years at forward for Boston College before making the decision to transfer.

"We are thrilled with Evan's decision to further his academic and athletic career as a Buckeye," Matta said. "He is a quality kid who will add depth to our team as a front court player. Having already played two years of collegiate basketball, he will also come with the knowledge of what it takes to succeed at this level. We look forward to him joining us this summer and working with him towards the fall of 2011 when he can compete in games."

Ravenel saw action in 39 career games over the last two seasons with the Eagles, averaging 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per appearance. As a sophomore in 2009-10, he played in 25 games, including 12 ACC contests, and posted 3.3 points, 2.4 boards and 0.4 blocks per game, leading or tying the team lead for blocked shots in six contests. He also posted a career-high eight points three times, including in back-to-back contests vs. Florida State and North Carolina in February.

Ravenel is a native of Tampa, Fla., and attended Brandon High School, where he was an all-city and all-country selection while averaging 16.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots per game as a senior en route to a 24-5 record and the state Class 5A semifinals. He was enrolled in the Lynch School of Education while attending Boston College.
