PG Jamari Wheeler (Official Thread)

Twice, Holtmann went to the transfer portal in search of help for his backcourt. More recently, it was to pluck Russell from Louisiana as a ball-handler and scorer who could help offset the loss of Washington. Previously, he went out and landed Wheeler, a transfer from Penn State.

The fifth-year veteran was brought to Columbus primarily because of his defensive prowess and grittiness, which has been on display early.

“Jamari's been really good,” Holtmann said. “He's been an every-day guy in these workouts. He has brought a competitiveness and a defensive approach that I think we need. He's got to improve some things defensively, but we all know his ball-hawking is tremendous. And he competes. He really competes on that end. He was important for us, and he's just brought a really every-day approach to his work, which has been I think important when you have some young perimeters.”

No. 4 – Jamari Wheeler
Position: Guard

Class: Graduate (fifth year)

Height/weight: 6 feet 1 / 170 pounds

Jersey number: 55

Major: Sports coaching

Background
An unranked recruit in the 247Sports.com composite database, Wheeler was listed as a three-star prospect and the No. 22 player from Florida by ESPN for the class of 2017. As a senior at Gainesville The Rock School, Wheeler averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game while helping lead his team to a school-record 35 wins. The Gainsville Sun named him the Small Schools Player of the Year.

Initially signed to play at Duquesne, Wheeler changed course when coach Jim Ferry was fired following the 2017 season and followed him to Penn State, where he was named an assistant under Pat Chambers. There, he grew into an impact player particularly at the defensive end where he was twice named to the Big Ten’s all-defensive team (2020 and 2021). As a sophomore, he was named Penn State’s most improved player.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – John Harrar knew just where to tell his former teammate to go.

For four years, Harrar and Jamari Wheeler were more than just teammates. They were roommates, close friends trying to help Penn State assert itself as a Big Ten contender in men's basketball. But when their coach was fired, and his interim replacement not retained following the 2020-21 season, both players considered transferring.

Wheeler quickly found a home at Ohio State. Harrar stayed to play for new coach Micah Shrewsberry. So as the two approached each other in the postgame handshake line following Sunday night’s 76-64 Ohio State win in the Big Ten opener for both programs, Harrar gave Wheeler a pointed directive.

“I told him to go say hi to my mom and my girlfriend,” Harrar said.
