Mike Conley Off to Hot Start After All-Star Break for Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies needed someone to step-up after they traded Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors. Not only did they need to replace his team-leading scoring, but they needed a perimeter player to help open up the post for their stars in Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. In their two games since the NBA All-Star Break, Mike Conley has stepped up to be that guy.

In two victories over the Raptors and the Detroit Pistons, Conley has played superbly. In those two games, he is averaging 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Moreover, he?s shot 57.1 percent from the field and a ridiculous 62.5 percent from beyond the arc. Obviously, those percentages aren?t sustainable, but they are promising.

Conley?s great two-game stretch has seen a vast improvement in his scoring while still maintaining his other stats. On the year, he?s averaged 5.9 assists, 2.4 boards and 2.2 steals per game, all of which have stayed put during these two games. However, he?s also averaged just 13.4 points per game on 43.2 percent shooting from the field and 37.2 percent three-point shooting.

Griz point guard Mike Conley points to faith on, off court

In 2007 as a newly drafted Memphis Grizzly, point guard Mike Conley spent time with his little brother, "Jon Jon." Conley says his mother, Rene, is his "biggest spiritual role model" and that his faith helps him deal with adversity on and off the court and compels him to work in the community, "passing on as much as I can to anybody that needs it."

In a season filled with many distractions for the Grizzlies off the court, guard Mike Conley says his faith has helped him to stay strong and help his team.

One recent evening, Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley was eating with his father, Mike Conley Sr., at a local restaurant.

?Mike Conley, can I have your autograph?? a fan interrupted. As Conley Jr., reached to sign the paper, the fan snatched it away and gave it to Conley Sr., a world champion and Olympic gold and silver medal triple jumper.

?My dad started laughing and he was like, ?Yeah, you are still my son. I am no longer known just as your dad,?? said Conley Jr.

Staying humble is one of the character traits that Conley said his father taught him, along with being respectful and honest, working hard, and carrying himself at a high level.

Conley?s mother, Rene, added another ingredient: faith.

?My mother is my biggest spiritual role model,? Conley said. ?She has a great faith and has always been very religious; her mother and her mother down the line. Everything she has done in raising me, I really look up to her for it. She got me headed in the right direction.?

Conley was baptized at age 10 at Christian Life Cathedral in Fayetteville, Ark. When he was 12, his family moved to Indiana, where he attended Eastern Star Baptist Church in Indianapolis.

?It?s something that changed my life,?

said Conley of the move. ?It got me really focused on basketball and allowed me to get to where I am today.?

Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley continues to be quite a steal.

Conley became the franchise?s all-time steals leader Sunday when he passed Rudy Gay during a 76-72 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Already holding the Grizzlies? single-season record for total steals (144 in 2010-11), Conley is on pace to also shatter that mark.

He ranks first in the NBA with 119 total steals in front of Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul (115). Conley will break his own record if he simply grabs one steal in each of the Grizzlies? remaining 27 regular-season games.

Conley eclipsed Gay in fewer games and despite playing one less season in Memphis.

Conley has 642 steals in 411 career games. Gay departed as the franchise leader with 640 steals in 479 career games until he was traded to Toronto last month.

?I?m calling Rudy (to rub it in),? Conley said, jokingly. ?That?s a great accomplishment. I?m honored to be in the same sentence as Rudy because he obviously set the standard.?

There?s incentive in front of Conley, too.

His career-high average of 2.3 steals per game this season ranks second in the league behind Paul (2.5). If Conley continues on this pace, he?ll again earn a contract bonus for ranking among the league?s top five in thievery.

Memphis Grizzlies Will Only Go As Far As Mike Conley Takes Them
by Tony Ramsey

uspw_7106436.jpg

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Memphis Grizzlies abruptly traded their leading scorer away in the middle of season to go with a more inside-based offensive attack, but the real key to how deep the Grizzlies advance in the playoffs rests on the shoulders of point guard Mike Conley.

The Grizzlies took Conley with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft and Conley has been a steady contributor as the team?s starter in every season since, with an emphasis on ?steady?. Conley has averaging around 12-13 points and in the area of 6-7 assists every season since 2009, giving the Grizzlies much of the same thing every season. This season Conley is putting up much of the same production with 13.3 points and 5.9 assists in about 33 minutes per game.

Which players will raise their game and lead the way in NCAA Tournament 2013?

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Six years ago, sitting in the locker room after the national championship game against Florida, Ohio State point guard Michael Conley Jr. still had no idea how good he was.

By then, after what Conley had done in the NCAA Tournament, everybody else knew it.

"I think the run was Michael Conley at his best," OSU coach Thad Matta said, remembering maybe his favorite Buckeye. "It was winning time. It was time to make plays. And he wasn't as quiet and laid-back as he appeared to be. He was a killer."

This year, the Final Four will be played in Atlanta for the first time since Conley, Greg Oden and the Buckeyes lost that title game to defending national champion Florida, 84-75, a loss and twist of fate that still burns in Matta and those players.

"Oh my God, we think about it all the time, trust me," Conley said.

"We were as good as any team I've ever seen, and wouldn't you know it, the team that won the national championship the year before and has everybody back was there again," Matta said. "How many times does that happen?"

When Mike Conley starts talking, his teammates make certain to listen.

Such was the case during the Memphis Grizzlies? game Friday night at the New Orleans Hornets.

Conley, the Grizzlies? point guard, who early in his professional career, had developed a reputation as one of the quietest players on the roster, surprisingly called out shooting guard Tony Allen during a pivotal stretch Allen described as a ?shooting zone? for the five-year veteran.

?He told me to get my bleep (expletive) back,? Allen said.

When asked how he responded to Conley?s unorthodox command, Allen, displaying a smile, said, ?Nothing?I got back. That kind of surprised me coming from Mike Conley. That goes to show he?s growing as a point guard and taking control of the team. I just like the feistiness he?s brought and I just want him to keep bringing it, man.?

Fortunately for the Grizzlies, Conley?s keen desire to refrain from remaining tight-lipped has proven beneficial to a Memphis team many essentially had written off before the All-Star break, given an assortment of midseason transactions that included trading former franchise player Rudy Gay to Toronto.

Mike Conley stayed hot on Monday in a 92-90 win over the Spurs with 23 points, three boards, two assists and one steal on 11-of-17 shooting.
He's absolutely on fire right now. Conley's March averages were 17.6 points, 7.2 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.5 triples in 36.6 minutes per game.

Mike Conley attacked the Kings all night long on Sunday, finishing with a game-high 25 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals, while making 9-of-14 FGs and 5-of-6 FTs.
He even hit two 3-pointers to round out his latest brilliant game. Memphis has won five of their past six games,
