Police/Legal Blotter (stop breaking the law, asshole!)

Three Florida football players and one former one will not face charges in a shooting at a Gainesville apartment complex earlier this month because police determined the incident was an accident. The investigation determined that current UF players Kenneth Tookes, Reggie Lewis and Andre Caldwell, and former cornerback Dee Webb, didn't know an AK-47 assault rifle they were handling was loaded.

Naval Academy charges football quarterback with rape
By TOM STUCKEY, Associated Press Writer
February 22, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Navy quarterback Lamar Owens has been charged with raping a female midshipman in her dormitory room, the academy announced Wednesday.

"These charges are accusations, and Midshipman Owens is presumed innocent until proven otherwise," academy spokesman Cmdr. Rod Gibbons said.

Since the alleged attack last month occurred on academy grounds, Owens was charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and the investigation is being handled by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service, Gibbons said.

The academy did not release the name of the woman. Gibbons said the academy was offering her support and counseling.

Owens, a 22-year-old senior from Savannah, Ga., would not be available to comment, Gibbons said.

"He remains assigned to the Naval Academy and will continue to attend class, performing other duties normally assigned to midshipmen pending results of the investigation," Gibbons said. He said the academy took steps to prevent contact between Owens and the woman.

An Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury inquiry, will be held to determine if there is sufficient evidence to go ahead with the case, Gibbons said.

The military academies have been under scrutiny since 2003, when women at the Air Force Academy in Colorado began coming forward with accusations that they had been sexually assaulted by fellow cadets over the previous decade and were ignored or ostracized by commanders when they spoke out.

A Pentagon task force found that hostile attitudes and inappropriate treatment of women also persisted at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and at the Naval Academy.

Earlier this month, a senior at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., was charged with sexually assaulting six female cadets in the campus barracks and other sites. Webster M. Smith, 22, a linebacker on the academy's football team, was charged under military law with rape, assault, indecent assault and sodomy, school officials said. Smith insists he is innocent, his lawyer has said.

Owens guided Navy's football team to an 8-4 season record that included victories over Air Force and Army and a victory in the Poinsettia Bowl over Colorado State.

Scott Strasemeier, head of the Navy's sports information office, said Owens' athletic eligibility is complete. He declined to comment on the allegations. The academy's 2006 starting quarterback will be chosen during spring practice, which starts March 27, he said.

hinyg8's post on GBW:

Lots of discussion about discipline at various schools and lots of finger pointing.

Here is the next round....PSU senior lineman allegedly sexually assaulted a girl 14 months ago. However, charges did not come until after his senior year and he did not miss a down.

This, in spite of previous legal problems. Not a big deal, perhaps, that the charges were slow coming; but considering the player's history I would have expected Joe Pa to have taken *some* disciplinary action...

It also wouldn't reek of conspiracy so much if not for this little gem: "Former District Attorney Ray Gricar has been missing since April." Huh? So DA's go missing for 10 months at a time and the wheels of justice are stopped? Not where I come from. I wonder when Spring ball started in Happy Valley?

This is the same player that Joe Pa also had to defend publically when Paxson upset NOW last year.

Hokies QB suspended

Hokies QB suspended by Beamer after arrest
By KYLE TUCKER, The Virginian-Pilot
© March 3, 2006

Another Virginia Tech quarterback is in trouble with the law.

Freshman Dewight "Ike" Whitaker was arrested by university police Wednesday for the purchase and possession of alcohol by a minor - a misdemeanor. Whitaker is 18.

He'll be in court on March 23.

Hokies coach Frank Beamer announced in a written statement Thursday that Whitaker had been suspended indefinitely from the team "due to violation of a team policy."

Beamer's announcement added that there would be no further comment . Phone calls to offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring were not returned.

Whitaker will be a redshirt freshman in the fall and, with spring practice beginning in two weeks, figured to battle for the starting quarterback job left vacant by Marcus Vick.

Vick was kicked off the team in January following multiple legal problems and an incident in the Gator Bowl in which he stomped on an opponent.

Whitaker is 6-foot-4, 206 pounds and considered the most athletic quarterback among those returning for Tech.

While redshirt sophomores Sean Glennon and Cory Holt likely have the inside track on the job in 2006, many have projected Whitaker as the Hokies' future under center.

At Northwest High School in Germantown, Md., Whitaker threw for almost 5,000 yards and 56 touchdowns. As a senior, he threw for 2,586 yards and 28 touchdowns, also running for 432 yards and 10 scores.

Whitaker was rated the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the nation as a senior by rivals.com.

Typical media shit. Attach the Vick stuff at the end of an otherwise boring and meaningless blurb.

18 year old college kid busted buying alchohol, there's a fucking shocker. :roll1:

Two Tennessee basketball players charged with crack possession...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2356239

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee basketball players Anthony Passley and Jordan Smith were charged with possession of crack cocaine and suspended indefinitely from the team.

Passley, a redshirt transfer, and Smith, a walk-on, were arrested early Sunday, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said Monday.
Officers trying to clear traffic near a nightclub spotted a car on the sidewalk under a no-parking sign and approached to ask them to move, DeBusk said.

Officers found 15.2 grams of crack cocaine in the car and charged the pair with possession for resale, the police spokesman said. Passley was charged with simple possession of marijuana, DeBusk said.

"I am very disappointed in these young men," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said. "Our players need to take their responsibility for being a role model seriously, and if they don't act responsibly they won't be playing at Tennessee."

Both players were released on bond. Passley transferred from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, while Smith has played only four minutes this season.

Give me a break.

What red blooded American college kid hasn't tried to sell a little crack to make some extra money? My God, if they had a story in the paper every time I had 15 grams of crack in my car when I was young.....
