Post 23 Season tOSU Coaching Changes

I really don't understand the isolated mockery of Chip found elsewhere. they've been very close the past few years despite massive flaws.

oSU has been mostly suspect at running the ball for awhile. they also didn't play defense for a bit.

chip doesn't have to turn them into Michigan in the rushing attack. They have to be credible, and with Will Howard's skillset and weaknesses, that should be relatively simple for a proper offensive mind in the running game.

there's also the matter of not dropping from NFL draft rb1 to something unimposing (last few years) when Trey needs to recover (for a few plays or a week).

now they might be matching treys talent when he comes out, and that's without factoring in Peoples or if a proper running scheme allows Hayden to play football more than twice a year.

Yep. Hopefully someone to work alongside LJ to start preparing for a transition when he hangs it up. ( my guess is after this year.}
Speculation on other forums has identified Darryl Tapp as a possible target.

Explains the delay as they wait for the Super Bowl run to end—Day said in his press conference he expected the position to be finalized within the week.

Tapp was almost certainly recruited by Johnson out of HS given he graduated in the DMV when Johnson was DL coach at Penn State (and was good enough to go yo Ava Tech), so long-standing relationship there, and also a continuation of that major recruiting base for Johnson/Ohio State in the DMV.

Bosa and Young can also give major insight/encouragement into the hiring process.

I think it would be a slam dunk and am hoping Tapp is the guy they bring in as the second DL coach as they transition from Johnson.

Day said at his press conference that he is also considering another special teams coordinator, which would suuuuck.

But, Day also hinted at getting more involved on special teams himself. Hopefully since he locked up Kelly, a guy he should be able to absolutely trust to run the offense, Day can get more involved with special teams and not pursue a special teams coordinator at all.

That would be a perfect hire for the last spot. We all know a transition plan for Johnson needs to happen and if you could get a guy like Tapp under his wings for a year or two, that would be a home run. Get the current players and active recruits comfortable with him as Johnson eases his way out.

I've heard that name elsewhere also. Certainly makes sense why Day said it would be at least next week for that 10th position to be filled.

I think I mentioned this name somewhere on the board. And it's starting to gain steam. Taylor was always a pipe dream, IMO, especially with his son transferring to Miami. Tapp is starting to get more realistic, and could happen by week's end. But the fall back plan is just to promote JL to FT. It also helps that Tapp has a pseudo OSU connection with Young and Bosa. And Day saying that he's waiting until after the SB to make his final hire is even more smoke to Tapp and away from Taylor. Because there was no reason to ever wait until the end of the NFL season to get a DL coach in college

Just a question and I decided to put it here rather than in any person's thread.

If you look at the list of coaches on the AD website, it shows 7 coaches. Chip Kelly is not yet on the list. Doesn't that leave two openings?

It makes sense that one should be filled with another DB coach. There are too many DBs on the roster for a sinlge position coach.

So, that leaves the last slot for an assistant DL coach or a LB coach. They could both be hired if a current staff member moved to an analyst position.

They recently hired Matt Guerrieri as an assistant coach for the Safeties.
2. Chip Kelly - OC
3. Jim Knowles - DC
4. Justin Frye - OL
5. Brian Hartline - WR
6. Tony Alford - RB
7. Keenan Baily - TE
8. Tim Walton - CB
9. Larry Johnson - DL

That's the 9 coaches, there is only 1 vacancy.

And since the 49er DC was fired today, the assistant DL coach there may be available.
Just because they fire the DC, I don't think that any other defensive coaches will automatically get fired too.

Check out the 49ers' assistant coaches. How do they keep track of all those guys? There is a defensive line guy and an assistant defensive line guy. The assistant DL guy (Trapp) was mentioned by someone as a possible Ohio State DL coaching hire.
