Eliot Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York yesterday after a sex scandal put an abrupt end to the political career of a rising star who seemed destined for the White House.

Mr Spitzer, a crusading former prosecutor once known as the Sheriff of Wall Street, said that he would ?leave public life? two days after he was identified as Client 9 in a $5,500-an-hour international call-girl ring.

The Governor was exposed as Client 9 of the Emperor?s Club VIP call-girl ring after he was caught on an FBI telephone tap setting up a tryst with a ?American, petite, very pretty brunette? prostitute named Kristen.

She was identified last night as a failed rhythm-and-blues singer born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupre.

?I just don?t want to be thought of as a monster,? Ms Dupre, 22, born in New Jersey and now living in New York?s Flatiron district, told The New York Times. ?This has been a very difficult time. It is complicated.?

On her MySpace page Ms Dupre said that she had left ?a broken family? at 17 and had used drugs, ?been broke and homeless?.

?But I made it,? she adds. ?I?m still here and I love who I am.?

The woman at the centre of the sex scandal that has brought down former New York governor Eliot Spitzer says she does not want to be thought of "a monster".

Ashley Alexandra Dupre, a 22-year-old nightclub singer from the Jersey Shore, has been identified by The New York Times as "Kristen", the woman Spitzer is alleged to have met in a Washington hotel room.

what those who are against prostitution don't seem to understand is that it isn't just the oldest profession. its the ONLY one. no matter how you slice it we all sell ourselves every single day. the only difference between me being a tech and some chick walking the street is the parts of us we sell and the negotiated price.

The old adage "Every woman is a whore, it's just different prices" has always rung true with me. A hooker is at least just being honest about the most basic of trade economy. Fucks for some bucks.

It's just another kind of working for a living. And let us not forget it isn't a female only profession. There are plenty of working boys out there too, you just don't hear about them as often.

This sort of scandal, for me, isn't about the guy paying a girl for company. It's about not being fing honest about it. He hid it. He decried against it public all while making money transfers to take part. That's the "victim"(if there really is one) in this situation, the public who chose to believe a liar.

Spitzer's escort: 'I love who I am'

NEW YORK (CNN) -- When the Emperors Club VIP said it was sending Kristen, a call girl it described as a "petite, very pretty brunette, 5 feet 5 inches, and 105 pounds," Client 9 was pleased.
"Great, OK, wonderful," he told the escort service's booking agent, according to a federal affidavit.
Client 9, later revealed to be New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, was caught arranging the liaison on a federal wiretap. It was the beginning of the end for him.
For the woman at the heart of the prostitution scandal, it was just another step on what she calls an "odyssey" of degrading abuse and high aspirations.
Court documents reportedly identified Ashley Youmans -- now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupre -- as Kristen, the high-priced prostitute who met with Spitzer at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on February 13.
