PSU sanctions - 4-yr bowl ban, wins since 1998 vacated, $60M fine

My predictions:

1) vacate all wins from 2001-2011
2) 5 year bowl ban
3) loss of 20 scholarships per year for 5 years
4) current players can transfer and play immediately on scholarship, and not counted against 85 limit of other team for one year (limit per team of around 5)

This, plus the school must disassociate itself from Paterno. This means they will need to remove his name from the library, and no more Peachy Paterno.

My prediction:

-5-10 year bowl ban
-5-10 years inleigible for a conference title
-5 years of 15-20 scholarship loss per season
-forefit all bowl wins and money (including BCS money) since 1998
-all players can transfer without penalty and PSU may have to pay their way, though they will count against the 85 scholarship limit somewhere else
-long shot: all home games in 2012 will be played in an empty stadium
-long shot: all wins forefeited since 1998 or 2001, dropping Paterno out of the top spot

As I said, I didn't bet on this one.

Based on the odds I set and what the feeling is now, I think the smart money is on the payouts for the bowl bans of 4-to-5 and 6-or-more years.

"With the benefit of hindsight, I should have bet more."

The "not banned from any future seasons" looked like free vCash to me. I should have gone bigger on that one. If there had been a line for "no TV ban" I would have been all over that one too.

If I were Emmert (and Delany), this is what I'd do:

1 - PSU plays only road games for 2012 and 2013 (2 years balances B1G opponents so they almost all get 1 extra home game). PSU gets the normal amount of tickets and revenue for visiting teams.

2 - Bowl and B1G CCG ban for 7 years, and the B1G teams split their bowl revenue for those seasons 11 ways, with PSU getting zero.

3 - schollies by year:
...2013: 10/63
...2014 thru 2019: 15/63 (63 is the FCS/1AA limit)

4 - all current players can transfer without penalty, though they will count against the 85 scholarship limit somewhere else

5 - the PSU athletic and compliance departments, and their administration must be subject to all FOIA requests in the future. Note - If I were Emmert, I would make this a condition for all teams that want to be eligible for the new playoff format that starts in 2014. (USC, ND, Miami, etc. should all be subject to FOIA requests for anything related to athletics or program compliance within their Universities)

No TV ban or death penalty. The TV ban penalizes the fans of their opponents, and it's also hard to enforce with satellite broadcasts and unauthorized internet feeds.

Imma gonna go large.

One year suspension of football activities

  • some form of full ncaa probation/suspension
  • 5+ year bowl ban
  • 3 year tv ban
  • Total scholarship loss of over 50
  • No scholarships for next year's class
  • Players allowed to transfer immediately without penalty
  • Wins since 1998 forfeited

I was thinking that whatever the NCAA should choose to do...it needed to make the Oklahoma/BS sanctions look like a slap on the wrist. I'd say you have it covered.

  • Bart O'Buttchinsky must coach in the Pedo Bear costume for five years

Do you see any difference between Pedobear and the current Nittany Lion costume?

I'm guessing this is a much smaller penalty than expected on these pages. Navy and Temple are gonna want a big pay day. Nebraska and Ohio State want two bye weeks like a drowning man wants a glass of water.

Current players released from contracts. Free to stay or go.
School must honor all scholarships for those who chose to remain as students in all sports, revenue and non-revenue.
Scholarships for football reduced by 15 per year for four years.
Forfeiture of Bowl revenue, BTN revenue, for 2011 - 2012.

I like the wings on helmet idea, Throw on a mustache on the back side of their pants.
